I am thankful for videos like these that paint a realistic and honest picture of what it is like to be a self-published author However, it is incredibly discouraging for me as an aspiring writer I couldn't live off of writing like this, but I also can't bear the thought of going the traditional route Because I feel like even though the author usually makes more money this way, it is still such an incredibly unfair amount given the work one puts into making the books There has to be a better way to self-publish If not, I'll die a poor author🥲 Comment from : Alexa |
Thanks for giving us insight into the life of a real author Great video I love your candidness Comment from : SanityOne |

What I like about your story is being true and content with yourself brbrMost people are misleading some of us first time authors , about making 6 figuresbrbrWe can write about different things or category that we feel like or if there is a story that we want to tell others about brbrTherefore we don't need to be specialized in a certain areabrbrThank you so much Comment from : Benny Leo |

I won't be sticking with 1 particular genre, I love to read many different genres so I will include those in my writing too, I plan to write contemporary romance/supernatural novels, I will also try to write some pure chick flick romance series, like the type Nora Roberts write, but I also like to read fantasy novels, so I am going to be writing a lot of those too, you can say that I will be jumping in-between genres, the good thing of being an indie author is that we have more freedom when it comes to deciding what genres we want to write, unlike traditionally published authors who once they start with one genre's they usually are forced to stick with that particular genre or they can write in the genre they want using another pen name like JK and Nora Robert did Comment from : Arellys Ritchie |

thanks for telling us about this stuff! And I would love an in-depth analysis of why you think some books sell differently from others Id also be interested in seeing the graphs of numbers by date, like, when the sales are highest, how much you might be selling older books when a new book comes out (I know it's not a series, but still you probably see a bit of that?) Etc! THanks again for sharing! Comment from : AuthorElliot |
I put my copy of Pistol Daisy in the guest room for my mom's post vaccinated visit, and she devoured it in a couple of hours, wondering where the rest were! She probably isn't the sort to leave a review, she's probably outside the target audience (she's 76, but has always loved westerns, so maybe not lol) -- great video! Comment from : Just Eva |
Do you write your own books? Comment from : Albert |
Love this video, I've self published 2 poetry books which are currently up on Amazon etc I'm now thinking of writing a fictional book, and see where that goes Again great video will certainly look out for more 👍 Comment from : Ian Lovell |
And, btw, definitely missed these writerly videos! Comment from : Blue Skye |
I would love to know see a similar video for all your books or even your business as an "author" + writing related streams of interest together and how you manage to actually be a full time entrepreneur because for me, I want to make most of my money off of books, but realistically that will take years if not longer, so I'd love to have other ideas about how other writers do it to actually not have a traditional job, but still have enough streams of income to make a good living, if that makes sense Thanks! Comment from : Blue Skye |
Thank you for your honest It is very helpful and inspiring Comment from : Odessa Rose |
A note on Series: I love when books are connected It may not be a part one and part two, but more like here is a separate story but there are connections to other separate stories either directly or via Easter eggs Stephen King comes to mind Comment from : matt hayes |
First off, bless you for just having the heart to share and not subscribing into this competitiveness that’s consuming a lot of good creators and their creations Comment from : Pro Metheus |

thank you for this hoest video Comment from : Ayane 893 |

I have friends who don't pay for art or editing I ask them: "So, did you buy a TV? How many TVs? How many times did you eat out this month? Are those things more important than your book? Your book is forever and you spent a year writing it Who cares if you don't make the money back Spend the damn money" Comment from : Todd Warner |
A grueling profession :( Comment from : Nicholas Leonard |
Thank you so much for sharing, I am working on a fiction work right now and hope to get it published eventually and hopefully make those 100 sales at least :) but for now just having fun rewriting a story I care about Comment from : Mari Jade Writes |
Paying for editors has been my biggest hurdle Facing reality that I will more than likely spend way more than I will ever make back kinda hurts bsigh/b but I guess thats them apples Ill still keep writing regardless Comment from : T P |

Awesome Video I believe it is a wonderful thing to give people an honest understanding of the real life expectations of being and average indie author I remember reading that less that 1 of authors (indie or tradiontional) are able to make a living off their writing That statistic greatly influenced my decision to just write for the joy of it about whatever comes into my mind I'm pretty sure I myself will always be at a loss forever So for any writer who stumbles upon this comment I have written three novels and the cost is below:brbrPrice to Learn how to write and make booksbr($11,250)brMoney madebr($325)brbrDon't feel bad for me This was my planned vacation money until Covid hit So Instead, I locked myself in my room and wrote 3 novels That was a hell of a ride I feel like I spent 11 months in some type of fever dream Comment from : Teddys World Journal |
Thank you for doing this It's refreshing to see you, Jenna, and a few others encourage this path but also lay out the reality of expectations I can't wait for the next video Comment from : shaun wells |

So refreshing to see a self publisher talk openly and honestly about their efforts There's so many scammers on here hawking get rich quick courses selling 'no content' books To listen to an actual fiction publisher lay it all out there and so enthusiastically is great Yes! Please do breakdown videos on all the books Thanks so much for posting this videoI think it will give a lot of other authors hope Comment from : AM Van Dorn Adult Western Books |

Congrats on the sales, it's so exciting! My debut novel (Torble the Traderous Gnomad, available on Amazon) just came out on the 21st, and from my Instagram followers I've sold I think about 15-30 copies, no hard numbers yet I'm so excited to see some reviews Speaking of which, do you do any reviews on other indie authors? Thanks so much and keep up the great work! Comment from : Jeffrey Sunseri |

Excellent video, you should check out iWriterly (Meg LaTorre) she has a lot of interesting information as well I agree with you, being a self published author is a lot of work and anyone going into this hoping to make a lot of money should rethink that, it’s possible, but unlikely Comment from : Marwyn Sacre |
Thank you for sharing this information Like you said in the video, it helps for managing expectations Comment from : JeremyFee |
These videos are really helpful🙌 I like to have an insight in the self-publishing world even though I have a publishing deal the traditional way:) My publishers are Norwegian (as my writing) and most Norwegian books aren't translated into English If I want to publish in English as well, I might have to do it myself! It might be interesting to experience publishing from "both sides" as well! Comment from : idatherese |
