In the live version of the song it shows on the screen shows David Gilmore with his plane He was actually learning to fly when the song was written The drummer, Nick Mason, is also a pilot His voice is the voice you hear in the middle of the song Comment from : Hephaestus Buc |
Why do you ALWAYS try to dig too deep? It's about learning to fly an airplane and the joy of sailing through the sky Period Are not the words of the song on your screen? Most rock songs do not have a deep, secret meaning (some do, but not most) Just go with the words that are flying into your ears Comment from : Frank |
the other video is better with the native guy Comment from : Lawrence Eustache |

This song is about the wonderment of the physical and spiritual world we live in and man’s connection to both Metaphors are at play and more direct American Indian beliefs Native Americans believe in a “free soul” In essence, they believe that the soul is the carrier of human consciousness In our physical world, what would be more free than physical flight?brThe older American Indian in the video is a spiritual wise man The younger male Indian in the video is Learning to free his spirit and soul Most American Indians believed in reincarnation Reincarnation is generally defined by the idea that a soul is temporarily “housed” in a physical body that exists in the physical world And when that body dies, the soul continues to exist If you escaped your body to look down from above, what would that be like ?brThis song attempts to connect the listener to the other side, dimension, or spiritual realmbrGilmour noted:” ‘Learning to Fly’ is about breaking free Gilmour incorporated his pilot training knowledge in the lyrics There were three other additional writers adding to this songs credit Breaking Free can mean many things, for example, the music video Pink Floyd made involving this song, including a heavy American Indian influence David Gilmour is not so shallow that every song he is involved in is only about him and his own experience alone involving a songs broad listener affect Comment from : Arthur McDoogleheimer |

Kind of a cool tune, but at the time we all knew the time for this band was about to end Legends no doubt, but this album leaves me kind of sad I got into this band in '81 while just starting high school The Wall came out and it just got me more into them I can't count how many times I came home on a Friday after a long week of work and would sprawl out on my carpet with these guys just flooding my ears with epic sounds and lyrics - helping to melt away all the stress of that week When your time has come to reach that great gig in the sky, we all know we can't take our money with us But nobody told me we can't take our memories PF has given me a ton of great memories that I'd love to have in my ears during the afterlife If that's what it is, I'm down! Comment from : mil2k11 |
This song is actually about getting a pilot's license Comment from : canopener505ify |

I don't know if this is one of them but pink Floyd's later songs are mostly written by penny David Gilmore's wife she is a phenomenal song writer Basically the guys couldn't do it so they gave it to her and she did a great job but I'm not sure if this was before that or not You guys have to react to high hopes It's definitely up there with Floyd's best Comment from : Welsh_dragon |

This is my favorite song from them and that's hard to say considering many of their other greats The feeling it gives me is just bliss I get social anxiety, and being a loner individual, this song hits hard and makes me feel like I'm not the only human who forgets to live and feel It makes me feel like it's about someone who finally lets go and discovers their true self Learning more about how to let your soul feel free That's all that matters Comment from : Alex |
Has another guitarist said so much with so few notes Comment from : M J M |
Lex I understand that a lot of these old bands put you off in different ways The name black Sabbath, Ozzies reputation, etc And you may never have gotten the opportunity to listen to a bunch of the 60's 70s and 90s rock you have been recently listening to But now that you have given it a try it appears that we both have very similar tastes, and its really really cool for me to get to see a young swenty sixish lady enjoy all the best music from my youth Comment from : 3QQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQ |
