John Ruppert
Great analogy! I agree with you and I have been in both camps over the years I have had many subwoofer over the years including the Infinity Servo Statik 50 years ago, 24 inch Hartley in a custom enclosure, M&K, Polk and probably some I forgot I lean more to the REL camp these days as I am more of a music listener and I prefer ribbon speakers, hence I want a fast subwoofer that integrates well and disappears into my system I think many listeners today are more into home theater and are looking for greater slam PS Nothing wrong with that your taste your money👍

I get what you're saying but the female attractiveness analogy is pretty lame After watching this video, the 2 women who watch your video will drop down to 1 (Just kidding, maybe)

Im planing to upgrade my subs to dual svs sb16 from the episode evolution subs Evolution subs bass seems like it was trying to push hard but it wasn’t there and didn’t sound clean I never heard svs subs before, let me know what you think?

Thank you, that's the best explanation I've ever heard!

Rel sounds like a good set of towers Theyre terrible as subs
Comment from : A S

Greg Bartley
So many gate keepers in this hobby

Fred
I got a kef sub because I couldn't stand the crown on the rel
Comment from : Fred

David Canales
Please talk about ported vs Acoustic suspension
Comment from : David Canales

Scott Bennett
I really enjoy your honest reviews Thank you I bought two SVS 1000 Pros for my 2 channel high fidelity system They integrate so well I have to sometimes check to be sure they are on When the program calls for low-end, they deliver in a seemless way thanks to the excellent adjustability For me, these are great Maybe if I heard an SQ subwoofer in direct comparison I might notice, but I'm happy with the 1000 Pros
Comment from : Scott Bennett

James Mckinski
Thank you for explaining the sound signature differences in subwoofers
Comment from : James Mckinski

Mark Rosenthal
If maximum integration is the goal, wouldn't full-range towers without a separate subwoofer be the best option?
Comment from : Mark Rosenthal

Mudcat3434
Dude I am so glad you made this video I know this is old, but I just pulled the trigger on a FV18 Rythmik to keep up with my 1977 Klipsch La Scalas in a dual purpose HT 21/music setup And what you said about them is freaking exactly what I was hoping Something that blends beautifully, that fills in that sub 60hz zone effortlessly, and is everywhere, but nowhere at the same time I was obviously already excited, but now it is going to be torture until this subwoofer comes in
Comment from : Mudcat3434

John Wood
A Daihatsu reference! Many years ago a TV commercial came on The announcer, in a very big voice, started with "For over 60 years, the most trusted name in the Japanese automotive industry" I thought he might be talking about Toyota, or Nissan, or Mitsubishi, maybe even Subaru But no, it was, in an even bigger voice, "Daihatsu!" That was the first time I had heard of that company, and I've rarely heard of it since
Comment from : John Wood

Gianluca Bassi
On paper I am a Rel guyI find disgusting a noticeable subwoofer
Comment from : Gianluca Bassi

Hal W
WTF, the big difference is the ability to leverage a DSP in the SVS to dial it in vs the REL and it’s vibration issues It’s not about the impressive girl at a party dude Provide some real value in your statements
Comment from : Hal W

Michael Moore
Yeah I’ve got a Rel S510 great subwoofer disappears in the sound space I have a DIY 18” 1000w subwoofer that’s completely the opposite turn it on and there’s no doubt a subwoofer is running but if you have a normal house things fall off the walls on any floor of the house and you get rattles everywhere Knick knacks you wife has out wall hangings it takes a long time to find them all and deal with them I live out in the country so I can play it loud but in a subdivision you might get complaints in a apartment it’s a eviction notice for sure So one’s finesse and one’s blunt force trauma
Comment from : Michael Moore

D Rock
Don't understand this analogy Subwoofers can be tuned (as can cars in your analogy) If you want musical with deep base and not concerned with the "SLAM", that should be how you set up your subwoofer If you establish the correct positioning and settings for example, SVS 4000's, you set the volume and cutoff to better integrate with your speakers In most cases you can have 2 SVS's for the equivalent REL unit
Comment from : D Rock

Robie1900
If budget was a concern, what brand would be better? An Svs pb/sb 1000 is around $500 The cheapest rel I can find is also $500 but it only has a 65 inch driver
Comment from : Robie1900

Woofie
I have an SVS SB16 and if you set it correctly it will "disappear" as good a REL Sorry, but it will
Comment from : Woofie

Devils Voice
sealed / music ported / movies SVS is a good brand to look at for comparison between the two types ( sealed or ported ) for the same model ie PB 3000 n SB 3000 Lots of good info on their site

Thanks so much for this vid I've been watching several sub vid last few months and have been completely stuck I've felt like REL was the right speaker but no one's managed to accurately articulate exactly how the two differ so I kept researching other models as well You've helped to clear it all up in one short vid I have very revealing system very textured detailed silky smooth setup and I didn't want a sub that would compromise any of that It's amazing the details I get and now I know REL will compliment my components Again thanks so much you've saved me a few more months of anxiety and possibly wrong decision Great analogies very creative and relatable
Comment from : dm gmail

Eric Vaughan
Perfectly put, 👍 This applies to almost anything in life There is no perfect subwoofer, only is it perfect for you is all that matters
Comment from : Eric Vaughan

dmitris77
I run a pair of pb 2000’s along with my Heresy IV’s and thought it sounded great until I heard my friend’s Martin Logan dynamo 1100x sealed sub Her single sub sounded so much cleaner and quicker than my svs subs, and had loads of power and punch (she uses Emotiva towers) Now I’m researching sealed subs Leaning towards the REL t9x, But have a long way to go before I make a decision
Comment from : dmitris77

Just watched this , thanks for the explanation it makes perfect sense , now what type of customer am I 🤔

Thanks for describing REL subs, would you say that same description also applies to their HT series? I just ordered the HT 1205

there is a reason most people that run Magnepans use REL or Rythmik

Score Event or Somewhere Else
Thanks for the honest review With over 50 years as an audiophile I have become tired of the use of anthropomorphism in attempts to describe audio gear But I did appreciate your attempt As least you did not stoop to the one thing I find worse than fingernails across a chalkboard, that is the worn out phrase used by some reviewers in almost every review “punches above its weight” So thanks also for that😊

Which camp would you say the rsl speedwoofer is in? More like the svs or rel?
Comment from : charles king

Deione Lozano
I think you are talking about SVS is just able to hit the low notes since it has a better freq range They have a DSP for that so you can adjust it and smoother it out with the speaker you have already
Comment from : Deione Lozano

Kurtis 45
just purchased the B&W 608 - 8inch sub it was on sale for $250 at best buy good deal just hope it has enough umph for my 51 surround sound system if it's not enough for my 13x13 room what is another sub that is a good step up?
Comment from : Kurtis 45

tlk50970
I don’t think I agree I own many of these subs you’re comparing I’d compare more models inside a company, than a company vs a company SVS for example… My sb1000 and sb2000 do sound boomier and put out lots of sound for the package But my sb 16 ultras… Are not boomy at all These are more reference level They disappear in the room You hear only the music, not the woofer/box
Comment from : tlk50970

Tyler Marlette
i’ve got a pb-1000 and I was super impressed with the quality and extension The linearity was good enough that I use it to check mixes and even make music sometimes in my studio my reason for upgrading is I think I want a little bit tighter/accurate/punchy sound, and hoping I will get more even coverage with a sealed i’m between the sb-1000 pro - sb-2000 pro hopefully dual
Comment from : Tyler Marlette

Andrew Peel
I recently bought a rel Carbon se subwoofer, and at first I was not a fan, comparing it to my JL E110, the rel didn't have the speed and low end authority brSo I removed the passive radiator and replaced it with rels bp-12 blanking plate - and holy shit, what a difference Suddenly I'm getting the real low lows down past 20hz, the speed was incredible, and on par with the JL, it also went louder - the passive had a bit more detail, but I needed more slam! brbrI think you should do a review on the rels, switching between passive and blanking plate
Comment from : Andrew Peel

If you think BMW has sharp steering you really need to drive a Porsche Totally different league Great reviews BTW and love your channel!
Comment from : Nose On Scent

Scott Branham
Im addicted to bass, especially the kind that makes my eyesight get blury So it was SVS for me The tunability of SVS can make them kittens or lions Win win Great Video!
Comment from : Scott Branham

Scott Roberts
Great way of describing At this point in my life, I'm in the REL camp When I was younger it would have been SVS
Comment from : Scott Roberts

70 Grade
REL over SVS any day
Comment from : 70 Grade

Ace of Spades
I think one approach to home theater is clearly svs and the other approach or rel and rythmik is clearly superior for music I used to be I to car audio but always appreciated a SQ system and not pure spl nonsense
Comment from : Ace of Spades

Eric Shutter
lol got 2 SVS PBs for AV and 2 Rel S-series for music the right choice it seems 😂

Nunya Business
Your Mercedes/BMW analogy bresonated/b with me (I have owned both and yes, NOTHING drives like a BMW The feel of the steering!) Great way to describe the differences in these types of subs Different "feels"/"Sounds" for two different types of people and what they need Great job
Comment from : Nunya Business

The Pendulum
I have a REL S 510 because im more into music The music sounds so tight, she has Authority and yet Classy at the same time
Comment from : The Pendulum

Chris Hargreaves
Thanks for explaining My personal taste would be to have a 2 channel system that has a sub that blends into the system and a home theatre system that thumps and wows I did start with the SVS PB16 Ultra to do both and eventually will get a smaller 12in Rel for 2 channel audio
Comment from : Chris Hargreaves

mrq1701
I'm going to set up my subwoofer in the same location as the two in the video (slightly behind the mains and toward the center rather than the corner of the room) I am concerned brands like SVS have a noticeable DSP delay for music listening For that reason I started looking at REL subwoofers I want a sealed 12 with about 500 watts RMS I might two if my circuit has the power available
Comment from : mrq1701

M8
When you talked about rel subs being able to blend with the sound without giving big bass, would you know which does better job ht1003 or rel t7brAll im looking to add is richness to sound not necessarily interested in adding bass itself, im using b&w 705s2, they bit lean lacking richness in sound
Comment from : M8

Keith Copeland
I have a REL Q108E and agree with your assessment! It integrates very well and doesn't call attention to itself but you know it's doing its job!!!

Ken B
I agree w/most of what you're saying but you lost me with the BMW vs Mercedes comparison I've owned multiple beemers and benz' and in no way would I say the BMW is faster or better handling than the Merc I understand the analogy you're trying to make but I'd recommend picking a less subjective topical comparison
Comment from : Ken B

dBtje1980
I own the sb-1000 pro next to my kef r300 And after watching this video… It seems to check a lot of the Rythmic boxes Blends in perfect and people don’t seem to notice it at all
Comment from : dBtje1980

daee jon
I changed 4 different models of rel and my existing is sx212 which I'm going to trade My final thought on rel is not for home theater but great for music
Comment from : daee jon

Bekillingyou1
My Rythmik fv15hp is perfection It makes the room dance That's the only way I can describe it

Locman W
Is the Rel HT1003 better than the B&W ASW608 for music?
Comment from : Locman W

Danny Boyle
I dont know - JL is an incredibly detailed, musical and integrated subwoofer Read the reviews - many consider it one of the most musical subs out there But, it can also deliver slam when needed - that's compliments of the R&D of the W-7 design
Comment from : Danny Boyle

Joshua Brumback
Man I recently saw an independent in depth side by side between SVS now and before they sold out to China and it was obvious and apparent The 10” driver alone went from like 23 lbs down to 8lbs
Comment from : Joshua Brumback

Erwin Weary
you did an amazing job explaining this man brilliant💯

Comment from : Jonah Walton

Buddy Jenkins
I took your advice on the REL for my home theater When I watch a movie I am more interested in hearing a song played in the movie sounding like my two channel system in my listening room more than feeling the explosion in my bones
Comment from : Buddy Jenkins

Kael
I know what kinda guy you are when the comparison is Merc vs BMW I’d rather base that is accurate, not overpowering and engineered to a high quality while being a decent price
Comment from : Kael

Travis Seera
"Fear locked" Ya that's me Could I get a recommendation? I primarily want a sub for music All I have right now are two Martin Logan slm xl's run by a NAD D3045 The speakers are on my wall, mounted beside a The Frame tv 20' depth of room, about 50' long (entryway, living, kitchen all in one), 10' ceiling I'm a bit concerned that even getting a Rythmik f18 or SVS sb-16 I'm going to be missing components, or they won't pair well with the Martin Logans, or streaming via Chromecast won't be high def enough to make that level of sub worthwhile Thoughts? Man thank you for the time!
Comment from : Travis Seera

LG XBOOM OL100
What its better for music rel of the svs of jl audio 🤔🤔🤔

Ammar Khairi
Enjoyed your vids a lot, Nemo! Well done and keep it up! I know this vid is posted over a year ago, I do, however, have just one comment -- I think this review really oversimplified the unique characteristics of each sub model in its respective brands, which is highly arguable By simply generalising brands into camps, the analysis didn't really do justice to the subs itself, and to a point, can be misleadingbrbrFor example, both SVS and Rhythmik have ported and sealed series, and each model sounds very differently albeit being within the same brand JL Audio's V2 lineups + the E-series perform differently from its predecessors And putting Rhythmik (ported or sealed?) in the "SQ" camp likened to REL, are you sure? How about KK, JTR, PSA and a plethora of other premium brands?brbrI hope my small comment could open up a new perspective in your research approach, moving forward Keep posting bruv!

Lol totally agree with your analogy of a fine woman vs wife material :) in relation to subwoofers

Ryder
The only thing I don't like about REL is they are all made in China
Comment from : Ryder

Cypriotkiller
What if I want both haha, I want the thump and authority, but I want also want to be able to integrate it with my speakers and have the range and accuracy

Renso Pinto
I got a real t7i used on offer up for 600 It’s so Fucken sweet Using the high level input it sounds so seemless It’s fun messing with the dials depending on the album lm playing It knows how to act depending on the genre I got it to go with the klh model 5’s It really rounded out the experience Like a nice rug that ties the room together
Comment from : Renso Pinto

PITBULL on Pinball and Arcades
Where do you put Velodyne? I'm putting them right between the 2 camps
Comment from : PITBULL on Pinball and Arcades

Alambe727
OK let’s clarify a few things here I like slam in base in my movies and music I like integration I like smoothness I like detail if that’s what you like I would go for the svs subwoofer lineup they are awesome I’m telling youbrI have the svs pb 1000 pro and to describe with this subwoofer be doing is almost impossible you just gotta hear it I have three klipsch subwoofers 120 W in all three can’t produce the bass sound that my one svs pro is putting out at the highest peak and at the lowest peak those three subwoofers can’t even compete so I got to get me another one to pair it with the other 1000 pro and get rid of the other two klipsch subwoofers
