When we're discussing the song 'Lana del Rey lust for life' I forgot to mention that keep in mind we were listening to that song on a pair of Focal Kanta and your speaker have to be good enough to hear all the bass details The RELs are there to supplement and they were able to keep up So that song was a test for both the Focal Kanta and the REL subwoofers Also, keep in mind I have a fully treated room with bass traps so bass is well controlled in my room Finally, I believe these have an in-home trial period but please double-check Comment from : @ThomasAndStereo |

I own a pair of T7x and heard a comparison of T9x and T9imy conclusion even with me owning a pair of T7xThe bass on the T9i has a more open and like a live bass guitarbrplayingthe T9x and my T7x are too tight for a musical subwoofer Comment from : @briancampbell7712 |
REL are great, but you should check MOREL subwoofers - are even more amazing! Special for music Comment from : @JumbleTasteSpinning |

Hi Thomas, I recently bought a Rega Elicit r and am running it with my Totem Tribe Towers I like everything about the combo except for the lack of bass due to better control I am currently running a REL HT1003 but I think I will try a REL t7i or t9i to hear if they really add to the sound I`m looking for Thank you for your review Comment from : @RonRivet |

They blend seamlessly Most other subs are too slow They pound too hard With rel the bass is fast and controlled It allows my Gato speakers to do what they do best Comment from : @calvinjohnson8662 |
Hi, could someone tell me what tower speakers brands are best for middles tones I bought a nice Cambridge amplifier that can't handle much power to go for large speakers that reach -30 Hz, instead I bought a rel t7 active subwoofer and I think in pairing it with a nice pair of tower speakers Any recommendations? Thank you very much Comment from : @hectortorres8188 |
I just got the rel s812 for my focal sopra 2 and it's amazing so i will add another at a later date Comment from : @hawkmoon369 |
I got 1 t9x and it’s amazing can’t wait to get a second! Comment from : @jordanmacfarlane5807 |
For some reasons, I just don't like floorstanding speakers They're just too attention seeking and physically pronounced for my liking Notwithstanding, I agree that their presence is an added benefit to the overall sound stage Comment from : @rovd4433 |
Would a Tx9 or 5 be any different Tx5 maybe faster yet misses what a tx7 would do The best are hard to choose all while chasing the best musical and loud listening in mind Comment from : @HarkamalAujla |

You did the best explanation for a review on the subwoofers that I've ever heard and answered all of my questions! Basically, I'm looking for a musical sub a sub that disappears when listening to music and you hit the nail on the head Comment from : @OCleirigh1776 |

Dear Thomas, Thank ´s for the amazing video Now I ´m really interested in sub I always thought I don ´t need one with my Dynaudio HS but I think they would bring dynamic into my system My amp is a Hegel H390 Unfortunately there is only one output… So I have two question and hope you can help me Is there a possibility to connect two subs to my system or what do I need for this? Second: Would one bigger REL be enough? Cheers Gerald Comment from : @gerygee6366 |
“I WANT SUBS THAT FART, …THE MORE FARTS THE BETTER!” Best review sentence ever!!! I lost it! Dood, I get it Funny use of words but it’s so applicable when you’re in the know Comment from : @blech71 |
Reminds me of that comment made by Bruce Lee… or at least I thought it was him, or maybe he quoted one of his influences… but it goes like “Don’t fear the man that knows a thousand kicks, but fear the man that practiced one kick a thousand times” The wording may be off but you get the overall idea Comment from : @blech71 |
Have you had a chance to review the newer 7x ? Comment from : @skularatna8136 |
Dumb question but what is the best way to hook up those bare wires toyour amp speaker terminals when your main speaker wires are already plugged into them with banana plugs ? Comment from : @jimji2774 |
Thomas, I’m interested in picking up a REL and was hoping you could answer something for me I ordered Omega speakers from Louis which are very efficient I’m powering them with very nice 1 watt per channel SET monoblocks Did you have any issues using the REL high level input with low output tube amps? I was told by my REL dealer it might be problematic if you don’t have enough gain for the speakers and the sub for a decent signal to the sub I’m also worried that using low level will kind of negate the benefit of having a REL Any thoughts or experience on that? Comment from : @dmurski21 |
REL T series are garbage, they use cheap transformers resulting a buzzing noise But you really need good ears to hear it, I dont even understand why they are selling this kind of subwoofers Comment from : @GG-ex5bk |
Pure advertising Comment from : @chrispictures1 |
Hello Thomas!!brNeed some expert advice from you my friendbrWhich subwoofer out of JL Audio E110 and Rel T9X would be better suited for 2 channel listeningbrI listen to more of Techno So I definitely want it to be fast and punchybrI think the E110 will go much deeper where the Rel lacks more of depth Just sayingbri want the subwoofer to disappear with my Focal Chora 826 being used with the NAD C388brRoom size is 20 x 18brThank you in advance Comment from : @suyashmoorpana9408 |
if someone is actually braindead enough to argue that a dac or cables make more difference than adding a sub I am absolutely done Great video Comment from : @TheFishFTW |
When my velydyne HGS 12 finally dies, I'm likely to get 2 t7i's Me, I want fast accurate base that I can't identify the location Velodyne was way ahead on that one, and was expensive at the time Two t7's will cost less than the one Velodyne did 20 years ago! There's no system that does benefit a lot to a little by the addition of a quality sub (or two) properly set up Comment from : @willbrink |
The second best decision I've made so far with my setup is purchasing a 2nd Rel ti seriesbrCan you guess what the first was? Comment from : @totalplonker824 |

One brand of subs that I rarely see reviewed or mentioned that people should look at are the Martin Logan Dynamo series I have had a pair of the Dynamo 800X in one of my two audio systems for 7 or 8 months now and am very happy with them They are in a music only system (Yamaha A-S 1100 amp, Yamaha CDS-1000 SACD/CD player, Yamaha WXC-50 pre-amp music streamer, Jamo Concert 8 loudspeakers on stands), and the vast majority of my listening is classical music and jazz I suspect their performance is similar to the RELs, but they have some advantages They only weigh about 28 pounds each so are easy to move around to where they sound best They come configured as down firing, but you can detach and reinstall the feet with a screwdriver to make them front firing if needed or desired (I left them down firing) They also come with an Anthem software app that lets you make all the operational adjustments with a smart phone or tablet while sitting in your listening position via Bluetooth - phase, volume, low frequency volume, crossover frequency It also comes with room correction software you can run The adjustments needed to make a pair of subs disappear to the point that they are part of the overall sound but it's not apparent where their sound is coming from are very small I find it very useful to be able to do it from the listening position where I was able to make tiny tweaks to each sub instead of having to crawl under the table where they sit, make a tiny adjustment, go back to the listening position and decide if it's better or worse than before brbrI made tiny tweaks to the settings for a few days as I listened to more music, but I've never touched them again after the first 2 or 3 weeks Another good thing about them is that they can be connected via either high level or low level connections My amplifier only has one set of outputs for a sub and if I stream music via "Aux" on the amp, it bypasses the sub outputs I have both subs connected high level via the bookshelf loudspeakers on stands, so the subs are always on when I'm playing any music I have them in a relatively small room (about 12' by 15' with a 9 1/2 foot ceiling) and they're plenty If you have a big room, there are bigger and heavier subs in the Martin Logan Dynamo series that come with the same software apps and high level connection capability I bought my pair as open box items from an online dealer for a little under $550 each (discounted 25) plus the cost of good cables Comment from : @Don-md6wn |
Lower Frequency Response: 32 Hz at -6 dB in room???? A sub to 32hz??? Comment from : @vlbphoto |
Thomas is the first person I've ever heard say they wanted a farting subwoofer lol Comment from : @ajzepp8976 |
Hi Thomas great review! How does it stack up against a B&W PV1? dual 8 inch isobaric also musical imho Comment from : @edtan9761 |
Why did you pick the T7i instead of the T9i? Comment from : @rafaellagahit7140 |
I'm wondering how the t9i compares? Looking to get a single unit and not sure if it will evenly fill the room Comment from : @grahamprescott9426 |
I bought a REL Storm III a couple years ago for $500 It's an almost 20yo subwoofer and at that price you won't find a better, more musical subwoofer Maybe not even for twice the price This thing still hits 18-20Hz with ease (measured in room) but without the boominess of modern ported subs, and has transformed how I listen to music Comment from : @kellyhh1371 |
Here's a list that helped me outbr"whinylcom/bswf-guide/brIn the end, I went with #5brbrbr4:45 Comment from : @TheShitstuff |

the best is the BnW AS610 Comment from : @earvinquero2037 |
I bought the t9 and its great but only problem I'm having is on a hard wood floor it moves around like crazy I need some kind of isolation between the floor and the woofer Comment from : @jaurandt3rd |
you know the subs are awesome when the Chive logo and reviewer comments like 'you won't know where your $3K went' don't hurt sales Comment from : @herrtrigger7220 |
"I wanted my Subs to FART" l love that expression Comment from : @CanadaSocial |
Subwoofer I always liked that was great balance between movies and music and can hang with the big boys is the Monitor Audio FB212 They where at a fair price point made like furniture and sounded refined Comment from : @tommygun5vsrocky |
Good review I love that you tried the subs with a range of different speakers to really get a balanced view of their performance Comment from : @sometimesuk |
That Wicked Game cover by London Grammar that starts showing at 11:27 is superb I wish I could find the uncompressed recording Comment from : @JonathanGurgul |

Hello brWhat are your bookshelf speakers at 6:24? Comment from : @backrack01 |
Why you dont choose T9i for review? Comment from : @teknolojigundemi |
Any experience with Rythmik? Ascend Acoustics and Salk seem to like them For the same price as the T7, they have the F12 which is flat down to 20 Hz All use servo I just don't see why I'd spend so much for REL when there are other options out there that measure better and go lower SVS do sound good, btw I'd love to see some blind tests with different subs/speakers/cables, though I have a feeling it would embarrass some of the audiophile community and companies I don't think many people would be willing to do that on camera It may crush their religion Comment from : @TH-lo8mq |
One difference between REL and other brands is that REL has been making Hi-Fi subwoofers since before they were fashionable And they ONLY make subwoofers That pedigree and focus is what sets them ahead for this application All the best from Switzerland, Rob Comment from : @RobWhittlestone |
For purely stereo listening on my B&W 805D3 / pimaluna EVO tube amp, would you recommend a dual REL T5i or T7i if my room is a small enclosed bedroom (4m x 45m x 24m height) - 18sqm or 1500cuft ? I listen mostly to jazz, soft vocal music and the like (Im not into rock or loud music) Comment from : @jonathanmatthew5631 |
Where did you get those white sound dampers on the wall? Comment from : @shaneahmad9777 |
2 bad for the unbased comments on SVS subs when “they” didn’t hear them Especially the SB line from SVS is really good for music and deserve a fair comparison to rel subs as for sound quality Comment from : @bartbarelds8454 |
Question for the masses I have a Marantz 6014, Emotiva XPA DR3 amp, KEF R3s (left right and center) and Klipsch surrounds If you had $1200, would you use 2 T5is or a single T7i ? Comment from : @rolson6775 |
Hey Thomas & stereo is rel good for movies too or I should go with an svs Comment from : @lyndonramchatesingh105 |
Do you always recommend 2 subs? Comment from : @hclandscapes |
Appreciated this video very much as I've been looking for suitable sub to use with the variety of newer and vintage magnepan speakers I will be acquiring, I currently own I Martinlogan dynamo 700w sub don't know if it would integrate well with the Magnepans Thanx sir for the comprehensive review !!👍🏾 Comment from : @jeronunkoffunk9437 |
I wonder why people would want 18 subwoofers in there rooms, maybe they have quite large rooms, i have two ten inch rels and they're very powerful and can rattle my house if wanted Comment from : @anthony2010707 |
my only problem with these new rels is the bloody logo everywhere man i quiet surprised it's not shooting crown shaped glitter when u drive it Comment from : @ERRORFACE1 |
they look so ulgy Comment from : @dariusmoldovan6202 |
Do you have any experience with REL S510?brDo you now use subwoofers in your sistem and if not why not?brI,m thinking of getting pair of rel s510 to support my stereo sistemthe only think that bothers me if the integration in my stereo system will be ok Comment from : @vinylseeker867 |
By far, a proper room treatment will have the biggest impact Comment from : @Ab20222 |
Thomas: one of the AV forums online seems to not think very highly of REL subwoofers compared to SVS and even Monoprice Monolith, even for music I was wondering if you think the REL’s are superior for music and if so why I think one of their complaints was it doesn’t go low enough and doesn’t represent as great a value as $1000 a piece Comment from : @StefanUrkel |
I just purchased a REL t/7i subwoofer to complement my anniversary LS50 speakers and a Yamaha A-S701 amp and the sound is excellent to my ears I just listened to Frank Sinatra’s album “In the Wee Small Hours” and the sub blended perfectly and really enhanced the sound vs no subs The glossy black LS 50 goes very well with the glossy black REL from an aesthetic point of view I don’t have the space for two subs but one will do me My living room in 6mx8m with the listening at one end 6mx4m Comment from : @henrylawson430 |
OMG, stop mentioning SVS if you've never heard them Ridiculous Comment from : @markucla |
Hi Thomas, very nice review and very informative as ever What is your opinion on using electronic crossovers ? as the subs come already powered you can cut low Hzs and send them "only" to the subs very accurately with send the rest of the audio spectrum to the main speakers Kind regards, gino Comment from : @gino3286 |
Hi Thomas, the B&W ASW608 & ASW610 subwoofers go down to 23dB and 20dB respectively, yet are said to have good base control/definition, which might make them good for classical music Did you ever listen to them? The COVID19 pandemic is stopping me from auditioning them with Rel T7i and T5i Price wise they’re cheaper than the Rel’s Comment from : @GodfreyMann |
Did you buy these beauties? Comment from : @analogaudiorules1724 |
I dont understand why should i buy this when it cant go low Many floorstanders go as low or close to thatbrOnly reason to buy this is for bookshelfs Comment from : @20puskinas1992 |
Will TWO Rel T5i's be sufficient in a room size 5m x 5m ? Thank you Comment from : @martinmbokazi8372 |
Great video Thomas I would have put flat frequency response and depth (F3) in this list around #2 and #3 Why? Most subs in the sub $1,000 USD range are either one note wonders, meaning their frequency response looks like a mountain rather than a plateau Or they have an F3 above 32Hz If a sub does not have an F3 of less than 35 Hz, what's the point? Unless your speakers have an F3 above say 55Hz the sub is not adding enough to justify the cost, space and complexity of adding it That said I'm a HUGE fan of 22 systems You can focus your spend on 4 high quality speakers rather than quantity Keep the videos coming Comment from : @jeffsloane8628 |
Thomas, you’ve inspired me to add subs! Can you tell me what your ‘crossover click setting’ is on your stereo rels? Just curiouseveryone’s room is different and their speakers but still I have8000fs so wanted to know how you’re blending them Thanks! Comment from : @Novilicious |
I find REL styling tacky and that's why I never tried them I am still looking into potentially getting rhythmic Comment from : @BastianUllr |
Can I use with q acoustic 3050i with them? Comment from : @inderjeet3666 |
using 2 REL S/510 for music (fronts) and a SVS Ultra for the 1 HT sub-channel perfection Comment from : @ericshutter5305 |
