Well compared to Germany the trains in the US doesn’t seem to be that expensive A ticket to travel all across Germany can cost about 100 € or even more Might sound cheaper than in the US and looking at shorter routes it might be true but Germany isn’t a big country Once you cross borders to another European country it get‘s difficult With Amtrak you can even travel from coast to coast for about 500 Dollar or less if you are lucky In Europe this would be impossible Comment from : leMineur |

I live in DC and the only Amtrak route that is feasible in terms of time and price is to NYC Comment from : Ryan Bon |

Amtrak need to reduce there train fare It is more expensive than any plane ticket Hopefully brightline and other private train companies will change things and start building rail lines away from freight ones Comment from : Maroon92 |

I love to travel by train and use Amtrak whenever possiblebrThe war against the railroads started after WW2 when under Eisenhower tax dollars brcollected from the railroads were used to build the US Interstate Highway System brToday sadly most Americans eschew all forms of public transportation Comment from : Chris Platt |

They should cater to dog owners more— have a car for owners and their dogs, no weight restrictions I would take it everywhere with my 90lb dog, even when slower and more expensive than flying Many dog owners dont want to put their animal in the cargo hold, and they are honest about their pets not being “service dogs” Comment from : C M |
The problem is “for profit” Comment from : ehulbert5 |
Absolutely ridiculous to have for profit intercity rail Comment from : Jason jack |
"private projects" as they show pictures of California's state funded HSR project Also the inland route of CHSR exists explicity to serve underserved fast-growing communities, and the trackage to get it into san francisco is already primarily in existance, caltrain was electrified with very heavily influence from the CHSR commission Comment from : AF |

There is no future for railway in US Because if it can't make money there is no incentives to operate And Amtrak is losing money! Comment from : william louie |
Compared to countries like Poland, indonesia, soon estonia, latvia, and lithuania, countries some americans can't find on a map have rail service thats more comfortable, cheaper, and faster compared to America America is lagging behind and it's a shame how politics and poor decisions makes anerica a third world country in rail Comment from : J L |
Parhaps americans could hire european companies to build their railnetwork for them since we got a lot of experience on that front Though their pride would never allow us to help them with anything Except for 5G infrastructurebrbrEdit: brBra I Think us Europas needs a bit of help with federalizing the EU from America Comment from : B S |
This amtrak system is an abysmal failure The US government has spent so many billions of dollars on Amtrak to have built out a complete dedicated railway system throughout the USA this is a pathetic continued waste of taxpayer money Look at countries in Europe where you can get tickets for one day to ride anywhere cheaper than here Comment from : LL S |
It’s a shame that the US doesn’t have a modern passenger rail system like they have in other industrialized countries But hey, we’re #1, right? Comment from : Daryl Vaughn |

Cool stationsbrGod bless the train inventors Comment from : SevenDeMagnus |

Living in the NE corridor in Delaware about halfway between NYC and DC, I've used Amtrak many many times until they started flexing the ticket prices It became more cost efficient to drive to DC and to Jersey City (using PATH subway to cross the Hudson into NYC) Philadelphia and Baltimore were too close and using commuter rail from SEPTA or MARC was easier brbrBut the biggest issues with all of this besides the flexing costs are the service hours A few years ago the last train left NYC and DC around 10 I think out of NYC is now before 9 PM which makes it too inconvenient if I have a dinner meeting for workbrbrI want to see passenger rail succeed and I would prefer to use it, but if it's only for the 9-5 worker, it is better for me to drive Comment from : Bob Chessick |

No one takes the train in North America It's just to vast of a land and there was never any focus on efficient routes so it's not convenient or economical Travel to Europe to see how it's done where there was a proper focus to build up the infrastructure at some point in time Comment from : Vazz Vegas |
Can't wait for the Northern Lights express! Before I moved north, I would take 2-3 trips a year on Amtrak routes, mostly the Texas Eagle and Capitol Limited, sometimes the Lakeshore limited With a cousin in Washington state, a sister in Maine, and family in St Louis, I am ready to be back on the rails Of course, my first ride as an adult has a funny story involving a recently discharged hospital patient showing everyone his amputated foot Comment from : Elise Kehle |
It’s very very expensive, from boston to New York city costs me 277 $ , Comment from : Kafour-كافور |
No bullet train, no travel Time to fix your trains! Comment from : Ted Tabaka |
The acela can travel at speeds of 150 mph but only on a small stretch of track Highspeed bullet trains and maglev super train technology Ok so forget maglev super train technology, that belongs to the far more advanced countries of the far east But bullet trains is something the mighty United States of America should of had decades ago They need to get the Amtrak acela onto its own track lines to bring it up to bullet status, reaching top speeds of up to 220 mph If im going to pay a high price for rail travel, i rather get somewhere fast just like they do in the far East But i refuse to pay lots of money to ride some slow and lethargic american train The United States of America needs to wake up and do highspeed bullet trains Comment from : Carl Smith |
Top officials at Amtrak are bribed to make sure it fails Bribe paid by air plane lobbyists to Amtrak top executives They do it in such a way, that nobody can prove it Comment from : G5 Realestate |
They need to add 3 extra cars in all trains and dramatically reduce ticket price, to gain new customers Instead, they have less cars and tickets are expensive That will be the first step in customer acquisition Comment from : G5 Realestate |
8:27 That's not Switzerland, it seems to me it might be India, but someone please correct me, if I'm wrong It's not Switzerland though, train stations are not built in the way the video clip shows Comment from : Marco |
Trains should be treated as a public infrastructure instead of a for-profit business It'll need a lot of spending upfront before it becomes economically viable But once you've crossed that threshold it's incredibly convenient and cheapbrFor example: right now train ticket prices are too high because there aren't that many trains Trains are scarce because people traveling by train are scarce Train travelers are scarce because train ticket prices are too high Comment from : 沈啍 |

Honestly, as someone who lives right between LA and Las Vegas in that I15 stretch, traffic is disgustingly awful (north and south) and a train in between will be HIGHLY beneficial to potentially lower that traffic to those vegans as dad calls them ( los veganos, it's a pun, get it vegas, vegans lol sorry) anyways, hope that happens because it's getting ridiculous Comment from : Dani |

As someone who has SEVERE fear of flying the trains are my only mode of transportation to see my family from the West coast to East coasts I just wished they were faster and not take my 4 days If they were 1-2 days I wouldn’t mind paying the money It just sucks a lot Comment from : Tork G |
To get true comparisons you need to strip out the cost of the subsidies for various industries Airline and automotive are also heavily government-supported, it's just not as obvious Comment from : Jay Reed |
it should NOT be cheaper to fly, if the energy used by each transport mode was evaluated , penalties should be levied on the most polluting to encourage the most energy efficient mode of travel This makes sense as we ALL end up picking up the tab for climate mitigation thats results form carbon pollution so those most responsible should pay the most Aircraft can consume 27 times more energy than rail transport , although of course it all depends on how well each service is used and how modern the equipment Comment from : Reverend Barker |
The Federal US government should be ashamed I understand helping others overseas but intentionally removing yourself from the #1 nation in the world for infrastructure is so unbelievable to me Comment from : Gary Griffin |

6:22 I do this all the time, sir! And I’m always bamboozled as to why it cost so much To sit on a train for four hours from New York to Boston or take a flight for about 30 minutes in the air and land It’s so much cheaper Comment from : Jones Jones |
I love taking the train and would take it much, much more if not for the cost and scheduling From Los Angeles to Santa Barbara for example I can drive for half the cost in half the time plus have the convenience of my truck to get around while there Comment from : Mike Smith |

Comment from : ze da Cruja |
People speak of countless reasons for this but I never heard anyone mention 2 facts: that most tracks are privately owned (by freight companies) and that many trains run on inefficient diesel vs electric propulsion I would say those 2 factors alone account for quite a difference Plus passenger traffic is heavily subsidized in Europe (I do not imply one should be proud of that ;-)) Comment from : Kajpajepolavailable |
