Wow I really hope that the photographer that just walked into the room in the hospital and asked to take pictures of your baby was someone who was screened and authorized by the hospital Maternity floors are supposed to have security to keep random nobodies from coming in and wandering around

this is probably how u start from hobby to slowly a full time thing but as u grow and get more experienced with photography u also understand don't undervalue yourself , because you'll be running after tourist for the rest of your life instead the clients coming to u its fine in the begging but not forever built up your name and reputation with your work u left your job to be independent ,if u overworking yourself for 20 dollars , u should have just stay in that office

yep that donation work is he coolest thing! i done it and i just basically starting to get known and payed weirdly enough i was scared but it was flawless and ended up with a proposal shoot at that location without even knowing about it one guy gave me is old pentax camera with big kit with all lense and bought the adapter for it and works perfectly lol that week made 210 for 3 days for 2 hours each day

i do this type of stuff for local strongman competitions coaches let me photograph their events and sell it to the athletes It can be lucrative depending on the number of competitors, but I use Pixieset instead of Saal same difference though

It’s not the photographer who makes money with these kinds of jobs, it’s the company that employs the photographers I’ve done school sports and newborn hospital photos My pay for both were commission based Definitely not getting rich from these type of jobs

Story time Several years ago my local school district contacted me about becoming their photographer I did a bit of research on the topic and found many horror stories from former school photographers I went in for a brief meeting and left with a comically thick contract to read The terms were alarmingly bad Firstly, you would not be paid Secondly, you had to be available to photograph all school functions (even travel to events) and obviously the yearbook photos You had to provide all the outfits for the yearbook If anyone failed to show up, you had to agree to schedule virtually unlimited re-shoots until everyone was photographed Parents could choose to purchase prints of their kids (your only source of revenue) but the school would take a massive percentage of the profits (at least 40) You get screwed at every turn and the contract kept adding insult to injury You'd essentially have to employ several full-time assistants to do everything required and the best-case scenario you might break even if you were extremely lucky They probably bankrupted many previous photographers and it's no wonder they had such a hard time finding someone desperate and naive enough to fall for their scheme

A guy set up at a busy golf course on a weekend he shot (with permission )the guys hitting off at the first tee had a printer in the car and his wife would print them off and he sold them at the 18th for $10 ea + $10 for the digital files a lot of guys who weren't interested at the 1st hole were impressed with the prints and bought them at the 18th $30-40 per group a group Teeing off every 5 minutes he cleaned up!

You forgot to mention Event Photography (sports events, shows, etc) and also Theme Park Photography (you know, where a fixed camera captures you freaking out on a roller coaster, LOL) So yeah, there are a lot of options for photographers to make a ton of money (although some would argue that's not really photography anymore)

My wife is a Wedding photographer who takes this approach More weddings per year for less money She's pushing 600 weddings under her belt at an average of less than $1000 each (including Bridals) She shoots fast, and edits fast but has top-notch customer service skills She also doesn't put artificial limits on how long she's at weddings, for most weddings she stays until the bride and groom drive off As a result, she has a 100 customer satisfaction rating, and dozens of clients who hire her for all their following family photography year after year, (something she doesn't even market)

School portrait/yearbook photography is hardly some closely guarded secret - they have a convention in vegas every year (SPAC) and everyone is incredibly helpful with set ups and workflow But the only people making serious money are the studio owners (who are also responsible for purchasing 6x of the same set up so that the load can be spread across multiple photographers) Those hired to shoot? Not making anything impressive Probably on the lower end of the scale You're also going up against people that operate nationally like LifeTouch et al, AND the majority of schools expect you to kick back at least 20 to even get the contractbrbrReally poorly researched video :/

There is one thing you are missing The location access Yes it may look like you just rock up to a tourist spot or a hospital But I bet if you do this someone is going to to go what are you doing here? The shire/county or the hospital They may want a licence purchased or permission This may have some restrictions etc I do know in the states you need a commercial licence to shoot professional This could be a barrier to entry

You would need permission from the Hospital to do that kind of photography and with COVID still active and the higher up muckily mucks trying to implement it again, it would be hard as hell to just walk in You don't just walk in But a good idea if you can get the permission

While I was a struggling college student I shot any and every gig I could find All was pre-digital so I had to work fast to get returns The best gig I got was working with I guy who got contacted to do high school and college graduation photos We also shot sorority and fraternity photos We worked long hours but the money was excellent This was in the mid 1970s and I learned a lot

Guaranteed, every one of these types of gigs has overhead… likely in permitting to the city or to the venue Here in Hawaii, commercial operations are so locked down, none of this could happen

Yea man I was walking around the Rockefeller Center tree and there was not one but a whole group of photographers taking photos of people They even had a cart with a laptop, and they were shooting with some sort of tethered setup into lightroom, had their little credit card scanner and everything, really impressive
