In the microstock stock business you can make from a few hundreds a year to over $3 million (Yuri) Most of my buddies in the microstock business make from $30K to $70K a year Really depends on how much you want to work and what type of stock images you specialize in such as holidays or food photography Comment from : Tom Baker |

Some of the best images that I have seen are from retired photographers or people that are retired who photograph artistically The site in which I suggest to see these type of images is FredMirandacom The site has many types of photographers and when I go to see some of the landscape photography I find many high quality images more so in landscaping and others in Cityscapes Just like any job, when it becomes a job and you feel pressured it can loose the luster of what photography offers On the other hand when it is done out of joy and the experience of it from travelling, quality work comes out of it I loved and still do the National geography photographers who create the image w/out too much editing Comment from : Luigi Riccardo |

Been working as a self employed photographer for 20 years I've made between 28k-85k in my career I live in San Diego Every year its differentsometimes by up to 20 You need to budget and plan Some months I make $1500, some months I make $8k If you have discipline, you can do it, but its feast or famine being self employed Comment from : Keep On Casting! |

You shouldn’t calculate how much a photographer make By checking job openings You should talk with pro photographers with different niches, and experience That would be more interesting for everyone :) great video tho! Thanks for sharing Comment from : Marcelo Moyano |

As someone wrote finding & keeping customers is the toughest part, especially if sales is new to you I had a photography business (retired) in the same general region as you (also did OOT assignments), I did 3 basic things, events, weddings, & portraits I did my best to do the best work possible, priced myself well, and kept my equipment in top shape If you don't know how to find clients don't EVER work for yourself To help you you may (nothing is for free) your local chamber of commerce, do freelance editorial work, find a way to photograph local events (especially those that don't get a lot of media coverage) you might get lucky Network at local business & photography industry gatherings as well as those in aligned industries such as caterers, hotels, & event planners Comment from : Larry Glatt |

thanks Nicole Comment from : Richarda Maharadja |

I've been a full time self employed photog for several years My advise for those looking to get into it, focus on a specialized niche, learn what the market wants and deliver more than that It's really the recipe for general business success Most photographers I meet think like artists which is fine but to be successful you need to think like a business person too Comment from : James Meyer |

In the UK, 15 of freelancephotographers earn between £20,000 and £30,000 a year, with most falling below this figure In fact, freelancephotographers have traditionally earned an average £18,821 annual profit (and average starting salaries are estimated as low as £12,000) Comment from : Rambling Tog |

Interesting video, Nicole Maybe you could make a video where you would talk about your beginnings as a photographer I know you made a video where you describedhow you got into photography in the first place, but maybe something where you would describe your beginnings in more detail First months, first two years, potential struggles That would really be great :) Cheers and enjoy the summer! |
We have a legislated minimum wage I think it's around $2300/hourbrbrMost of those ads didn't mention experience Those must surely be entry level jobsbrbrI am doing the video and multimedia units in the second year of a TAFE course in Western Australia Regular students have done a (one year) diploma and are studying for an advanced diploma On graduation, they will have a broad range of photography skills (including some darkroom) and experience in publishing electronic and printed books and brochures And, of course, video They would be qualified for those jobs Not cinematography though, that's a different course, but they will be able to do documentaries and interviews (see Film Courage), and probably including wedding videography Comment from : John Summerfield Photographer |

Adam Gibbs is International Landscape Photographer of the YearbrHe did a Q&A video on his channel recently Q How much do you earn? A Not enough to live onbrbrbrChristian Fletcher is a former International Landscape Photographer of the Year He has two galleries, seems to be living very comfortablybrbrIt's more about business skills than photography skillsbrbrSue Bryce on Creative Livebr"I am worth $US600/hour How to I know I am worth $600hour? Tat's what my clients pay me" Comment from : John Summerfield Photographer |

Nicole, I recently went to the Carolina Panthers training camp Open to the public and free admission I took "editorial" photos of some of the star players in hopes to send them in for stock sales Dreamstime has accepted an image but shutterstock rejected it because it "required press credentials" Well, It didn't require credentials so I am a bit stumped I haven't done a lot of editorial stock work so would love to hear your thoughts about this Sorry, I'm so far off topic to this video Thanks, Todd Comment from : Todd Kuhns |
|
I feel that the reason these companies low ball the salaries is because they don't understand what a photographer does I feel most of them think all we do is push a button and don't respect the knowledge that goes into being a great photographer On top of that, too many hobby photographers are doing jobs for low pay which dilutes the salaries of pro-photographers I feel that if you're a hobby photographer, and get asked to do a job, either do it for free or charge what a pro would charge Comment from : Speaks The Obvious |
