I would love to see a challenge like this, but for long distance, and with budget STOCK bikes, no fancy upgrades Comment from : colton fitzjarrald |
Spent about 500 miles on it and so far so good wwwyoutubecom/post/UgkxMesz3KOGEmwmvyKQfLfrRSUXLFzfVHZA Pros:1 Very light2 Solid quality build3 Fast delivery: It arrived 5 weeks earlier than expected4 Easy assemblyJust a few cons but nothing major:1 Cheap tin tubes and had flat on first day but not a big deal I replaced the tubes2 Seat is a bit uncomfortable but that's pretty much the same situation with most bikes3 Seat post is a bit long/high for a smaller size 48 bike - had to saw 2 inch off to fit properly The lowest setting is too high The post locking system does not seem to hold well (perhaps because I saw 2 inch off)4 wheels are not tubeless compatible (from what I can tell) Comment from : Rhonda Burrell |
2:00 - That's a respectable looking bike Comment from : Kiran Machiraju |
lmao £500 budget and ultegra groupsets 🤣 Comment from : Jamie Gilbert |
I have Trek Domane as my endurance and gravel bike, and Lapierre Xelius as my racing bike Comment from : Sami Salim |
I think the point you had proven is that you can race on a really good, but second hand bike well, but a new, budget bike does not perform All of you decided to upgrade the tires, which is another point to note What do you think? Comment from : Peter Koncz |
I came here hoping to find out what budget bike i could get for amateur racing i left realizing i still need a pro level bike for amateur racing 😂 Comment from : jacob maldonado |
Can’t believe one guy went preowned and used his own tyres! Blasphemy tbh Comment from : Adam |
Been throwing this comment around looking for skme help Its hard for me to find triban in a physical store where i am to size myself for their bike They claim xs ends at 165cm and small starts at 165 If i am 166cm (5'6) could the xs (all they have in stock right now for rc120) fit? Comment from : Brandon |
I would love to see a similiar challenge but in the Gravel segment! Comment from : Manten Vicible Devillé |
So moral of the story you can’t get a decent bike for £500 as both them bikes are probably worth more like a £1000 Comment from : GREG |
I only ride mtb, but this is the best sports based youtube channel around I love the challenges you put yourselves through I pretty much mock roadies as a hobby because, well I ride mtb, but seriously, you guys are rthe best Comment from : RIPapa |
Also regarding pros hiding data, it ensures their rivals can',t base a race strategy to pick on their weaker points If you know your rival is great at short climbs but fades on longer ones or has trouble facing change in pace often, that's how you can attack them Comment from : keflarjeoffrey |
more videos like this please! more races on budget bikes with the price of the bikes increasing each time Comment from : Julian J |
My road bike is even older than the Trek Madone, a 9-speed Scott AFD 709 and the most expensive thing I replaced were the chainrings and cassette It was fast enough for my only KOM on Strava, even though it's only a short sprint Comment from : Thomas R Koll |
So sad to see road racing reduced to laps of the local dog track Comment from : Jason Stack |
Finishing last but only seconds behindshows gear makes only marginal difference Comment from : Ab Cd MD PHD |
This is much more fun! Love to see this thanks guys! Comment from : 臼井弘実 |
I love my Triban RC 120 GCN just proves they are now relatable to average blokes like me Comment from : Herb A |
Brilliant this is Comment from : JEFFERY BEZOS |
I would honestly love either one of those bikes I'm new to cycling and can't afford even a 500 pound bike yet Comment from : PD Theron |
500? You're crazy I'm trying to get a bike for 200$ to replace my 4 year old 200$ bike Comment from : SuperComputer04 |
"elite road race"? By whose standards? Other than you sods, it looked to be a typical club race - where $thousands of expensive equipment is wasted on not much talent Comment from : Larry T atCycleItalia |
Mark is actually a power house He could sustain more than 300w on tt position on a tri bike, so that's probably more if he's sitting more upright and open his chest to breath more easily Thanks for playing as Ollie's part lol (although Ollie now transforms from dropped to dropper) Comment from : Scott Yi |
All 3 of them are nicer than my 2010 Trek 1000c Of course, my idea of success at 64 years old is to persist on a regular schedule and watch the data, which helps to keep me interested and engaged My peripheral goal is better fitness, but getting stronger, faster, and smarter is my main goal This was an interesting video, and my main takeaway is the importance of bike maintenance To date, I have never dropped a chain, but my bike is maintained well Thanks for this video!! Comment from : Eric Rickert |
The earo bit lmfao Comment from : Default UserName |
Just because someone owns an expensive bike doesn't mean they have got lots of money its usually there passion so they put there life and sole into that one thing Carn't blame them for that Comment from : wacked outdude |
Great video! It's a pity that the guy on the "Trek" lagged behind the first group It is unlikely that the bike was the reason Most likely, he had a bad breakfast, and his strength failed him Comment from : Андрей Комиссаров |
Lol I can’t believe you ruined that paint Comment from : Jeffrey Cleghorn |
Two of these three "old" bikes would be an upgrade for me Comment from : RDJ2 |
wish i could have one Comment from : Choka |
The TREK is such a beauty even today Comment from : 2deaf4sound |
How do I knos my size? Comment from : michelle diaz |
I think its important to appeal to the people into cycling first rather than buying expensive bike or gear Comment from : schmith jagen |
Obviously most normal people are most interested in the $500-1,500 price range for bikes That’s a solid range to get decent quality build and components for a normal working class person who is relatively new to cycling and/or only rides bikes for a bit of fun and exercise brbrThe types of guys who show up for these races will almost always be riding bikes which cost $2,500-6,000+ and they take cycling very seriously Comment from : Kyle Stewart |
got nothing on 44 teeth Comment from : NMOP3PISdn |
Now do £100 lol Comment from : Mel Butterworth |
What makes the bike go faster? Comment from : Diego Eleazar |
Love this Was wishing the post race discussion continued If you could change one thing on your individual bikes, setup, or preparation, what would that be? Comment from : Shaun Byrne |
There is a difference between big brands budget bikes and budget bikes Unfortunately truly budget bikes doesnt got the attention due to lack of sponsorship and ads Comment from : Ken Tan |
I bought a TI Raleigh Europa racing bike back in 1983 for £200 when I was a teen and had no concept of the price of things and in my mind today that's still how much a decent bike costs! How did we get to the stage where a bicycle can cost more than a motorcycle and you still have to provide your own power? Btw Raleigh! Remember them? Comment from : BAL |
What’s the model of the Castell jacket u guys use that has the grey stripes on the shoulders Comment from : criz florez |
This really helps taking away the entry barriers to the sport Well done! Comment from : Zerøbeat |
There's a guy there that looks like Mathieu Van ser poel 😂 Comment from : Andres Linares |

I personally think the best new buget-bikes start at 15k Comment from : Twrk4marcii |
How'd I miss this one? Budget GCN is my favourite GCN! ❤️ Comment from : Luke |
That Trek is gorgeous !! :) Comment from : Simon Murray |
I would love to get road bike! I cycle everywhere, everyday in a quite hilly place, so I guess I'm fairly fit I only ever owned the cheapest second hand bike though Would it be possible to get something decent for like 150€ to get into road racing as a "poor student"? Maybe build something from second hand parts? Comment from : Simon |
There's no reason you can't get 20 year old Ultegra components working perfectly In fact, I'd wager you'd get much better/more consistent performance out of 20 year old Ultegra than brand new Microshift Just because your bike is second hand doesn't mean it can't be in perfect working order; it can and it should (In a race context doubly so, for your own performance and for the safety of everyone around you!) Comment from : Drew Levitt |
Man, I have a triban rc120 and it is a very good bike I have changed quite a lot on it over the years, but it's still going strong Here's what I changed on it: Fizik Antares r7 saddle, Claris crankset, xtr bb, Conti 4season tyres, mavic aksium wheels, 110mm stem, and some nicer platform pedals Comment from : József Kurta |
I had that same exact trek madone bike It was super fast and still miss that bike It was 153 pounds when I put maverick r sys wheels on it Comment from : Mike Wilson |
It’s not the bike it’s the man, and when your the man, you can think up videos like this and have your ego well and truly massaged!😉 Comment from : Thetruth156 Real |
I have a scott speedster 10 (2022 model for 2000 but with accessories like Garmin and Garmin things like wattage meter and hart rate meter it's 450 so 2500 euro's) and I dropped someone with a TREK that was probably 6 or 7 times the price off mine Comment from : Definition off insanity |
the decent entry level bike from Decathlon😂 Comment from : Fabstar H |
Do Brits not like wearing cycling gloves? Comment from : Teacher Homie G |
The Trek is absolutely beautiful £500?! Complete bargain Comment from : Richard Smith |
Cute and funny, but did not live up to the challenge that was stated Typical bike competition: cheat as much as you can get away with lol One of these days, race on actual new $500 bikes, right out of the shop Comment from : Noel Johnson |
Asking again if please could I buy the blue Trek bike once you've finished with it? Comment from : Anthony Lloyd |

Nice ride guys very impressive Comment from : Mr Juhob Adventure |
My 2006 (NOS) and 2007 (used) S-Works Roubaix frames bought in 2008 and that I set up with Campagnolo and alloy rims will see me out At 71 years old, I am not interested in technology that I cannot maintain at home, but with new tech overpriced and constrained, and old tech replacement parts getting scarce, I am between a rock and a hard place I seem to see as many mech/chain problems on 2022 TdF and other races as in the Aughties, and I have no doubt the "old" Trek and Pinarello drive trains these guys raced could be tweaked to perfection I agree with the suggestion that a $500 bike with $500 upgrades would be a good video, but upgrading older bikes will run beyond $500, I suspect Comment from : Clinton Slayton |
Use the eurobike! Comment from : Patrick Joseph Marayag |
Incredible effort with a budget bike! Impressive Comment from : Mikel Gomez |

Getting the chain back on the ring mid-race - impressive Comment from : flashish |
How the HELL do you get your chain back in with your feet while moving?? Mine dropped three times in one ride last week and it cost me so much time and motivation Comment from : Kolya the Great |
Some background detail would've been good: what standard race Cat 1 or grade equivalent (for Australian viewers!) And a bit more prelude with a decent race strategy involving the GTN presenter Mark? as well Comment from : Matthew Rafferty |
That triathlon sock/cycling joke was brilliantly funny 👌 Comment from : lee dorney |

Mark’s comment about trying to emulate Ollie was gold Comment from : Robert Nastasi |
Expensive bikes and upgrades don’t make you fast They just make you fastER… 🤔 Comment from : Aaron David |
Still loving my 10 year old Madone An upgrade here and there, no problems Comment from : Sam J |
Second hand bikes are SOOOO much cheaper in the UK than in Germany You will not find a Trek Madone for less than a grand here in Berlin no matter what age Comment from : Tom Edward |
£500 bike £800 pedals🤣 Comment from : Geoff Arnold |
Usually you can save more watts on the person than on the bike get fit, lose weight, try to get into a more aero position it will be much more worthwhile than an expensive "superbike" Comment from : nuit |
If you want some good exposure contact Scot redding Local motorcycle rider World level and ex moto go rider and incredible cyclists Comment from : GroupFit Wiltshire |
