What do you think is the optimum price point for a bike? Comment from : GCN Tech |
I've yet to find a gravel bike with 105 (or GRX 600) groupset for less than about $2200 Either prices have gone up or the best bang for your buck is with a different groupset Comment from : MrGatlin98 |
Spent about 500 miles on it and so far so good wwwyoutubecom/post/UgkxMesz3KOGEmwmvyKQfLfrRSUXLFzfVHZA Pros:1 Very light2 Solid quality build3 Fast delivery: It arrived 5 weeks earlier than expected4 Easy assemblyJust a few cons but nothing major:1 Cheap tin tubes and had flat on first day but not a big deal I replaced the tubes2 Seat is a bit uncomfortable but that's pretty much the same situation with most bikes3 Seat post is a bit long/high for a smaller size 48 bike - had to saw 2 inch off to fit properly The lowest setting is too high The post locking system does not seem to hold well (perhaps because I saw 2 inch off)4 wheels are not tubeless compatible (from what I can tell) Comment from : Инна Муравьева |
Bike weight is so massively overrated by amateurs and newbies Just a couple of calculations and it becomes crystal clear that, unless you're a peak performance athlete, you will never be able to tell the difference between two bikes that are even widely different in weight Comment from : Francesco |
Once you hit around $1200 you’re usually in the range of a decent bike But you also have to check all brands because some are more generous with group sets and weight than others Comment from : C M |
i think this analysis forget the drivers behavior someone who just rides in the summer months (juni, juli, august) 3 times a week, can spend 150 bucks for a new bike, for 10 years how does that compare to bikes that cost 1500 bucks over the same period not everyone is a bike pro cyclist, but i feel every time i go to a shop i'm treated as one (not looking like one either :P) only carbon, shimano this and that Comment from : Reckz |
What do you think is the optimum price point for a bike? What do you think is the optimum price point for a bike? Comment from : Keenan Myers |
If if you have a sub $1000 bike and you like cycling and want to make it a part of your lifestyle, I think for an alloy rigid bike for $1750-2000 will get you enough performance and quality to satisfy for many years, or a $2000-$2250 alloy hardtail mountain bike Comment from : Colman Baldwinson |
Buy the latest used bike your budget can buy I recently bought my first bike which was well under £1500 and got a 2022 TCR with carbon frame/forks, disc brakes and 105s Just buy wisely, know what to look for and get as much help from any experts you know Comment from : fraser thomson |
use old tech best of the bunch 3 years ago gets you best price best tech and least weightframes for under 1K and build to suite! Currently 9 bikes and one for ever need: aero, climb, weather, crit, group, and fun Best new and expensive tech is always appreciated but in 3 years they will be lots less expensive Comment from : Terry Martin |
I got back into cycling to augment running I hadn’t bought a new road bike in over 30 years😬 So I ended up buying a gravel bike (2022 Kona Rove DL) it’s comfy and fun to ride but not necessarily slow but definitely squishier than a endurance road bike but nicely out fitted and It was $2000 My first road bike was a sport touring Nishiki back in 87 and I loved that steel bike that’s what caused me to consider steel again Glad I did Comment from : Daniel |
Even though I worked in a bike shop for a long time and already have a fleet of (old cobbled together but still decent) bikes I find something oddly comforting in watching these videos where youtalk about stuff I already know🤔 I'd say anything with even a claris groupset will do the job well enough for most folk Comment from : Robert Ferguson |
$1,000 for road or gravel say Claris or better for recreational riding but if you are going to be really serious that number is maybe $1500 at Tiagra/105 becase the cheaper groupsets will break and require frequent adjustments with the repairs negating any savings vs say Tiagra or 105 As far as MTB it's a bit higher, recommend miniumum a 1x drivetrain, hydraulic brakes and a dropper without the cheapest group sets as those don't last long either, say $1,500 to 2k for MTB You need to pay that as a minumum for it not to be the fault of the bike you don't like it Comment from : Mike Coglione |
So a used alluminium framed bike with shimano 105 is ok to start ? Comment from : SingleJingle |
Got a "big box" store bike a couple years ago - I hate everything about it and it was around $250 after tax Should have just saved and got an entry level specialized, Giant, or Trek Comment from : JumboJ |
Hey, I am thinking about buying a Triban rc 500 with microshift Is the upprice of nearly 150 Euros worth the uopgrade to Shimano Aurora? Or even the Upgrade to rc520 with shimano 105 ? Comment from : Jokor |
UK has sooo many bikes, used market will give you epic deals, sub 8kg bikes can be had for as little as 350 Comment from : Moonraker Deep |
It’s simple Just find the cheapest bike with hydraulic disc brakes Comment from : Terry Newton |
Triban RC120 with disc costs about 600-800US$ (depending on where you buy it) The only way to get as much bike for the money is another Triban Comment from : TheSandkastenverbot |
Get a carbon frame from China for around £500 Don't think it's going to snap in half because it's cheap It's cheap because you're ordering straight from the factory in a country where wages are lower just like the shops do You're also not riding around advertising a company as it is plain carbon (Unless you want it painted ) Comment from : Anthony Duncalf |
I don't know if quality has changed but my Tiagra group set has worked flawlessly for the last 10 years I live in the mountains so those shifters get a lot of use My bike was in the $1100 range I tend to commute, ride on and off road, CX bike Having something I can lock to a pole downtown or take on a long ride is an important consideration for meI don't think I would feel comfortable locking up a carbon frame Comment from : Tom Rodriguez |
We all can ride a s-works or Colnago c68 😂 Comment from : MaS |
Agree on 105, but once you have ridden carbon, you can’t turn back Comment from : douglas yong |
Stop talking about crap from Decathlon or other chain stores No one in their right mind wants something horrible and cheap Talk about specific brands and models and quit waffling on!!! Comment from : Hyper Horse |
You could always stick a straw into your cheap dusty wine, and still appreciate it Comment from : The Cat of Nine Swords |

hi , 750 for a 105 ? where ? Comment from : JL L |
I feel 1000-1500 is the best rangebrYou can touch a bit of reliability luxury looks convenience (cables)and satisfaction at that level Comment from : T bear |
This is of the now brbrDecathlon RC120 £350 Way better than "entry" level monstrosities with Shimano Entry Level Tourney and even Claris GCN need to check their groupset lineups brbrThis or second hand, Case closed Comment from : Ben |
Triban RC520 with shimano 105 groupset and a carbon fork seems to be a sweet spot for mere 900 Comment from : Dominykas Černulis |
Buy used Take your time and find the thousands of expensive bicycles that are hardly ridden, and somebody just wants to get rid of, or wants to buy the latest expensive fad I’ve been riding for 55 years, and have never paid retail prices Comment from : Chance1957 |
I purchased a full carbon road bike for £500 perfect condition! There's no need to spend anything more than £700 for a decent bike Comment from : Gary Lewis |
Its what ever the person can afford! Plenty of great bikes out there online that are very affordable! Way more affordable than you guys are saying!! Comment from : Gary Lewis |
I bought a Planet X RT57 carbon road bike back in 2012 for around £1000 I didn't want to spend too much as I didn't know if I'd stick with road cycling or not As it happens, I did and still have that original bike save for some upgrades (only original parts are the frame and fork) It's been a great bike I've just bought a second road bike, again from Planet X, this time a Pro Carbon with a full SRAM Force groupset with Hydraulic disc brakes This time I paid £2200, or I should say, I would've paid that had it not been for a 24 hour sale where I saved £900 sor £1350 delivered I don't belive I could have got better for the money Comment from : Flint Westwood |
If these guys say a cheap bikes needs at least 105, I'll throw my phone Groupsets below 105 are very good Even the 9 speeds, nothing at all wrong with them Comment from : G |
It's a shame Europe has normalized the VAT To me, it's unfathomable for the government to take 20 of everything bought Comment from : G |
Actually for these reasons I went for a Trek 25 second hand with a 105 group set No regrets, was working solid and for only 350€ Sometimes a second hand as a first good bike is not bad idea at all Cheers Comment from : Flavio Cardoso |
Now , a Year later could you put 1000 € on this pricerange when I look into the Shops and put all 105's you can pay now 1500-2500 € for a Aluminium or Carbon Bike in Germany Hope its getting not worst Comment from : MrOnesession BLa BLUb |
Pointless buying a race bike for public roads as racing or time trials are not encouraged in highway code A good general purpose bike Ideal for leisure and keeping fit is what I would aim for Comment from : kjm 1955 |
£14/1500 Comment from : Simon Hewins |

I was amused by the fiscal optimism of you two young men, Alex and Ollie What you spend on a cycle surely can depend on its amount of potential usage, the terrain it is likely to encounter, and the personal circumstances of the buyerbr To me, unless you are into competitive cycling, a bike near or over £1500 is merely self-indulgence coupled with a certain amount of gullibility Cycles are a bit like trainers - 'brands' can usually mean 3-500 more than they are worthbrMy previous bike was a Dawes 'Streetwise' back in the mid-90s when my sponsor spent approx £350 With improved bars and a Brooks B17 it was a cracking bike that took me from Land's End to the top of Shetland (unfit and overweight) with only one broken spoke that was my fault due to luggage overload which I soon ditched half-way It was as smooth as silk and perfectly comfortable brI also learned the myth of mega-multi-gears So many are duplicated, sometimes twice All the drivetrain components were Shimano mid-range and totally reliable I probably effectively used 10-15 of the 27 gears, if that (and there were some 'interesting' inclines along the way!) brbrI'm now an aged pensioner and getting back into cycling and the thought of spending extravagant amounts on a steed is pointless I will likely do far less than 1000mls pa (I don't do KM) and can still pedal my weight with a fair bit extrabrbrDon't forget, your £6 bottle of wine ends up in the same place as your £2 bottle Can be the same with bikesbrbrYou also seem committed to drop bars when half the cycling public don't use them - for very good reasons! brbrMy current steed is a Chinese copy which had hardly touched the road and ended up in a Church Jumble Sale for £40!! br(NOT because it was rejected by its previous owner but because his heart condition said 'no undue exercise')It has a Shimano mid-range SIS drivetrain and other components and I've added another B17 and better bars I also swapped to Schwalbe Range Cruisers K-Guards It sings like a gentle humming bird and rides like a dream It's not ultra-light but it is certainly not heavy With all the add-ons, and the TLC, it has probably cost me about £100 over a period brThis may not be typical but there are tens of thousands of cyclists who are simply looking for reliability, comfort and safety to give them the enjoyment they seek They want to own a bike and not have the bike own thembrbrWhy do we have to reduce cycling to some sort of machismo where one has to have the 'designer' bike to match the 'designer' trainers and baseball cap? It's a crazy world where the market is dictating the style rather than the consumer getting good value for money for them to get just out on the road and enjoybrbrWhen you got to the clothing, my heart sank deeper 'Patchwork' for sustainability? Get real Off-cuts to maximise profit and start a new silly trend for discontented cyclists I repeat my comment about a crazy world I'll stick to my basic long-sleeved T-shirt, my Coolmax underpants and my budget Lycra tights and Shimano shoes brAs for 'qualifying' to wear certain gear Well - I ask you I rest my case Cycling machismo rules!brI flew down the incline around Dunblane at approx 43mph but I wouldn't wear their jerseys if they gave them to me!br£79 for a rear light + £36 pa subs? What a scam! My rear lights cost far less than a fiver and a Gold Standard lock costs about £25brbrYou seemed to let go a half-snigger on mention of rim brakes Some of the descents on the End-to-End - Navidale, Glencoe, and Dunblane etc are not insignificant and some decent pads in my cantilevers worked perfectly brbrI give up on what goes for some areas of 'cycling' today Trends, marketing, consumer expense and undiluted fashion br£30 per inner tube? - I'd like to see the company's response when you tell them they puncturedbrThanks for the video - Alex and Ollie - you taught me a lot about current trends Comment from : UKPaul |
Whatever you can afford get it Comment from : Sedrick Quinn |

2ND hand Cannondale super 6 with Ultegra £1000'ish All the bike I ever need in reality Comment from : Bike - Camp - Cook |
in 2003 I bought a TREK 5200 OCLV full carbon full ultegra and bontrager racelite parts £2000 when that was a lot on money It weighed 8Kg with shimano flightdeck computer This machine was just incredible, worth every 2003 penny Bombproof build like it was made from something from another world and fast as fuck It never skipped a beat What would i need to spend today to recreate this experience with modern tech and shimano group type? Comment from : Silvertoday |
Meanwhile Sam Pilgrim out there riding a sofa Comment from : Crusty Bonanza |
It's September 2022, and the road bikes that present good bang-for-buck are those built on aluminum frames with alloy rims, Claris or Sora groupsets (often with more generic cranksets and brakes), and rim brakes Such bikes will typically sell for $800-1400 USD I would hesitate to put a new rider -- unless I suspect he or she is not serious -- on anything lower end that that Comment from : Ranger Smith |
Wait for an old dentist to quit cycling I bought a nice trek hybrid and a folding Brompton for $100 lol Comment from : Clyde |
1yr later than this video, and I've been looking for a gravel bike Lots about (new) but some with mixed groupset bits, and prices up Opted for a Merlin G2P with Tiagra groupset and I'm well chuffed with it Changing to 105 or the new GRX equiped bikes pushes the budget further than I wanted Comment from : Ian Lainchbury |
What about custom bikes??? I think you can get a much better bike, made just how you like it (you can choose each component) and get it at a much lower price than something from a reputable brand Comment from : Lucas Da Ronco |
i think 105 WAS the groupset of the people when i got 105 5800 it was $500 USD but now its gone up too much id say tiagra or claria is now the groupset of the people and they also have amazing performance Comment from : Ted Byun |
There are no doubt hundreds of thousands of cyclists who would whoop me on a $150 bicycle with me on a $10k pro race bike That being said, my first real bike will be a nice aluminum frame road bike with a carbon fork and 105 group set That seems to be a nice balance of being high quality, capable enough for advanced riders, and affordable enough to not be ridiculous I wouldn't want to outgrow that bike, so it's looking like the Cannondale CAAD13 will be my ride Comment from : Dreamweaver |
When you get a square taper bottom bracket - you've gone too cheap Comment from : M K |
I’ve got a Liv Avail 5 (2015) and I’ve made some small upgrades to it recently and would love to upgrade to a 105 groupset Would that be worth it or should I just start thinking about a new bike altogether? Comment from : Megan Phillips |
Neat coincidence that I just bought a Trek FX 3 Disc bike which at $1000 is near the low end of the 'best bang for the buck' range you guys settled on, and the FX 4 Sport would have been the high end of the range Comment from : James Van Asdale |
I just bought a used 20-year-old road bike for 100 bucks and it's the best deal I ever hadthough i don't know that much about bikes Comment from : Barry Liu |
I think the Canyon Grail 6 is a great price point for amateur cyclists like me Durable alloy frame, awesome GRX groupset, with most the functionalities of a top-end bike (like CF SLX) at a fraction of the price Comment from : Kerbodynamic X |
Saying that 105 is the groupet of the people, isn't enoughbrIt depends on where you leavebrFor Greece and othe lower salary countries Apex, Tiagra or even a Sensah would be considered BudgetbrNext time you do such a video, I believe it would be great if different budgets are accounted Comment from : Alvaniaris |
I’d love to hear numbers When I was a teen, it was great to get a road bike under 30 lbs under 25 was unheard of (This was the mid 1980s) Where are we now? Is 20 lbs a somewhat typical “nice” but not elite bike? 1000 pound price? My friend was racing a 14 lb carbon bike in 2004 but he was a sort of superstar, at least according to him, lol Comment from : mason appalachiantrail |
100 times 😜😘 Comment from : Josef Angeria |
I just bought my first road bike for 380 and that thing is so dam light and fast and weighs in at 23lbs! Love my 7 speed Triban! My first road bike and I came from riding mountain bikes all my life and I’m 37 yrs old Comment from : Ricardo |
I bought a 4,000 pounds Cervelo carbon with durace and carbon rims I figure you only live once and it will outlast me It is great - I can feel the difference over my old bike that was 1/3 of the price but I ain’t going to win Le Tour ever ! It keeps me fit, I don’t smoke or gamble and my wife is happy for me to spend the money on a bike My gravel and MTB bike cost similar money and all will see out my cycling days Comment from : Sean Morgan |
this video is so random and all over the place lol Random news, topics and tid bits Not bad, just wasn’t ready for it Comment from : Josh Mello |
Why buy an entry level bike? Or entry level anything? brWhy not buy the best you can afford and simply adjust to it? Comment from : Jerry Gundecker |
I love this channel man Comment from : bivens3ify |
$850 looks like the main quality starting point for Hybrid/Hardtail bikes right now Shopping for a road frame and the starting point for those is $1300 Comment from : Benjamin Hoff |
Even £500 is unobtainable for most these days, let alone £750brbrI've had my £200 bike for 6 years of daily use, still going strong on all the original parts because it's been well maintained The only thing that's needed replacing is the brake pads and wire Comment from : George H |
I was thinking roughly $1500 USD to get a bike you won't feel a need to upgrade quickly, good frame, higher quality components That said, I believe prices have gone up since this video was made Comment from : John Mininger |
you guys need to update this as the new, fancy 105 di2 it's no longer the "group of the people" at 1700GBP by itself! :)) and a complete "entry-level" bike with the same 105 group starting at 4k! Comment from : Augustin Luca |
I found my bike next to the dumpster Heavy as hell and I love it More resistance for my muscles Perspective is everything Comment from : Steven Hinkle |
I had to hear aluminum frame four times before I realized they said aluminum frame Comment from : Jeffrey Abelson |
I went to a wine festival an an expert there said “you either like the win or not” so price doesn’t come into it Well done guys it’s made me realise the bike is good for what I need even though I keep wanting a more expensive one that I’ll still probably won’t perform any better Probably if I loose a few Kgs on my belly might be my better option 😂 Comment from : Pete Caulton |
I’m over all the better for the environment commentsbrIt’s a generational comment stop swallowing this bullshit Comment from : Brian Brown |

I know the comparison isnt fair, but i used a 10$ second hand bike for a few years without problems Thats great value! Comment from : Rene Lariviere |
I wish some brands would start making bikes for heavier guys Like I'm almost 2m tall and 130kg, It is hard for me to find bike that would be rated for that much And im not even looking at road bikes, im looking at gravel bikes Most common i have seen are rated for 130kg but including bike weight Im sure it would work over that for long time, but I wish to have piece of mind that this crap will not snap under me when i will go bikepacking Now im using old Cross bike and rear wheel is giving up, spokes are snapping every second ride and hub is starting to make weird noises Comment from : Thalus |
I don't go for price point I have to have at least 105 groupo and frame can be Aluminum, with that said prob $2000 and below Comment from : Old School Karate |
It’s not about the bike I own a Factor Ostro I also own a steel 25 year old fixed gear bike I have the same amount of fun on both in fact more fun when I drop Superbike riders on me fixie 🤣👍 Comment from : Steve Brown |
I just bought a £600 gravel bike here in japan with shimano's altus group set in it, and my brother in Philippines roasted me for buying a bike for that price with a very low end version of components He said it looked like a £200 bike i can buy there Comment from : Scidix Reiznov |
As a waiter in nyc I can confirm that $1000 bottles of wine not only exist but are often ordered Comment from : Adam Lynch |
