Be very careful with car insurance In 2012 I had State farm with tow insurance for my truck and my fifth wheel Tragedy struck and I hit a deer that damaged my radiator and transmission cooler State farm was happy to tow my truck, but since the fifth wheel was undamaged they would not tow it I asked them what should I do? My truck was damaged and I had no way to tow it off the highway I told them if I left it where it was they were liable to have a claim on the fifth wheel They would not budge, NO damage NO tow I had to pay for the fifth wheel to be towed and for the storage while my truck was fixed Comment from : Jeff Ramsey |
To answer your question - provider could not provide service - see casey ladelle ytube channel he is a tow truck owner - I was a tow truck operator in Canada in a city for 3 different companys all providing road side assistance - One company i drove a dedicated truck- Comment from : Joe Sparks |
You never know how good or bad your insurance is to you have to use them, auto, home etc Filing a claim or using the service is the only way to ever determine how good/bad they really are Thanks for the information you provided Comment from : William Miller |
I'll tell you what's going on Good Sam only tow's to repair shops that give a back-hander They didn't have one in the area OR you told them where you wanted to go Comment from : Michael Stevens |
My experience with Good Sam was also very disappointing - we were on the road in western South Dakota south of Rapid City running later than usual We pulled in a RV park that was still working on the park - We got stuck in their driveway We had a 5th wheel camper at the time Calling Good Sam (20 miles south of Rapid City, SD) got us nothing but a person with broken english unable to help in any way We also, got ourselves out of the problem by calling the RV park owners home number who came to our assistance At the moment we do not have any roadside assistance either Comment from : Mark L |
WE had Good Sam, but we have State Farm and they assured us that with the roadside assistance we were covered We dropped Good Sam We only used it once when we had a blow-out on the by-pass around Nashville It took them 3 hours to find someone, but they worked with us and it was on a Saturday afternoon They had a hard time finding someone, but it was during COVID I hope I won't be sorry dropping Good Sam Comment from : Kelly Rouse |
Great story and wish I had heard it before I got Good Sam's They left me stranded in 2021 Called Marcus and all he had to say was sorry We gave training to the call center person that helped you No money offered Still looking for insurance Comment from : Warren Lancaster |
I approach fine print and the people that hide behind it a bit differently than y'all As far as I'm concerned nobody gets off the hook when it comes to not following through, especially by way of hiding behind six pages of unnecessary BS that was created solely for the purpose of screwing their customers over "Oh, he's just doing what he's told" doesn't fly 'He' is just as guilty as are the scumbags eating lobster in the executive dining room 'He' gets to meet Dalton, just like his boss will Comment from : Carl Beaver |
A couple months ago, we were 3 hours into a 14 hour road trip pulling our pop-up camper on a very bumpy interstate Felt a jolt but didn't think anything of it, because we were hitting potholes and rough pavement for miles Finally looked back and realized we had blown a tire By the time I was able to safely pull off, the rim was mangled Got it jacked up, pryed the rim off and found that the wheel hub had cracked in half This was on a Saturday, and no RV dealer within 100 miles was open Called everywhere and finally found a hub that would fit our axel from Tractor Supply about an hour away Changed the hub, rim and tire on the side of a freeway in the dark with 18-wheelers zooming by at 70 mph about 6 feet away The whole time, I was just waiting for one distracted driver to take me out Took over 4 hours from the time we broke down until we were back on the road Never again I will be getting roadside assistance before this next camping season Comment from : McScott76 |

I'm really happy I found this video Just today I was thinking about Good Sam Road side assistance as a gift for my brother and his wife because I've sat along side the road with AAA for 3 stinking hours only to learn that a tow truck company five miles down the road would have towed my vehicle 15 miles home IF AAA would have just called them Wow Three hours But with my brothers health conditions neither Good Sam's nor AAA fiascos would be acceptable Uuuuugh Comment from : Brad |
What do you think about state farm now??? Comment from : Kat4Animals00 |

I appreciate your commentary on roadside assistance We had a Good Sam Roadside Assistance negative experience as well After doing much research, and having another bad experience with Ford roadside assistance, it became apparent that the issue isn't at all whether someone is available to come to your rescue The issue is that Good Sam, Ford, Etc only pays a certain amount for a trouble call and only has certain providers in the area that have "agreed" to their rate Unless it's absolutely dead business wise most towing and roadside assistance providers make far more money on other calls We discussed this with our auto insurance company and added towing and roadside assistance reimbursement Now, we make the call, we pay, and our insurance company mails us the reimbursement check Comment from : Rod Brady |
Call centers with directives on what to do and how to do it So wrong on so many levels *I worked at a call center for a roadside assistance Id call a service provider only to be told "your company has not paid me for the prior services, so No, I wont do this" Corporate not paying these guys for doing the work! I dont blame the providers - burnedbrBut, leaving members stranded, is happening more and more often! Terrifying Comment from : Bird Lady |
THAT'S WHY YOU BUY THINGS AND KEEP THEM IN THE RV oh wait he married a blonde soo nm Comment from : resend delete |

I was towed by AAA on a snowy day in Ohio 2 years ago The driver loaded my van onto his truck and I expected to ride with him to my home He refused to let me ride with him so I had to walk 2 miles home on a cold day with an injured back and knee I was not pleased Comment from : whitemorn |
Years ago my mother was driving a motorhome that broke down and she finally just gave up trying explain to goodsam where she was between two towns on a major 2 lane highway Thankfully a real good Samaritan stopped and helped her Comment from : Stephen Willis |
How could you not know that you had to upgrade AAA to cover your RV? SMDH Comment from : Stephen Willis |
absolutely AAA I hope I never have to change another flat Comment from : Stephen Willis |
We got it simply bc we don't want to change a tire on the interstate and get killed! Comment from : Psalm27:10 |
I got rid of AAA too because my insurance offered roadside But once I used roadside through my insurance I realized that counted as a claim, and I lost my no claim discount, which overr time cost me more than AAA I am back with AAA Comment from : Hans Katzenmeier |
Similar experiences A tow driver told me I was really lucky he interrupted his dinner to come get me with as little as GS would pay him He advised me to dump them because I might not be so lucky next time It’s kind like medicare where the doctor asks $300 for his services and Medicare agrees to pay him $30 But the tow drivers could have better things to do and they don’t have to accept what road assistance programs will pay them I guess they might if they don’t have anything more important or more profitable With State Farm I just handle business myself and they reimburse me But at least it gets done Comment from : Shelter Mutts |
I had an identical situation where my Geico Roadside Assistance could not find a tow truck The problem seems to be that they are only willing to make association with companies that give them a kickback The first call I made to a tow company got us prompt service Geico did reimburse us, there was of course some paperwork involved I was not as nice as the lovely Kristy Comment from : Bob Frazier |
From my experience with STATE FARM , when you use their tow service you are charged as if it was an accident Not what I wanted You may want to ask them if is the case in all states Comment from : mitziesmom |
I WAS CONSIDERING SAM BUT NOT NOW!!!!!!!!!! ANOTHER THING I JUST DISCOVERED>>>>> the 1st time I looked at GS was a certain price, 2nd time , a higher price and the 3rd time THE PRICE WAS EVEN HIGHER!!! >>>>>>>>>>>FIGURE IT OUT FOR YOURSELF Comment from : stan burdick |
In the video you said you needed a tow for the truck & camper But the tow company is only seen taking the truck Perhaps it wasn't explained to Good Sam's that you only needed a tow for the truck🤔 Comment from : ALBERTA WILLIAMS |
goodsam couldn't find someone because they only contract with specific providers and they underpay, so nobody wants to contract with them Comment from : Judy Parsons |
Good Sams worth it new members $4995 for a year you’ll be glad you had it when you’re broke down looking for a tow or a flat tire and you can’t change it Comment from : ROBIN TAYLOR |

God bless you both I'm disabled on a fixed income I live in my RV and I was wondering the pros and cons thank you for sharing Comment from : Lenny Malley |
Yeah, I've had that "I can't find a service provider" experience with Good Sam (not even a tow, just a tire change) on I-10 in Texas, and ended up doing it myself I assumed the problem was geography, not Good Sam I was about to re-up with Good Sam for vacation season, but now you have me thinking about AAA+ Up your game, Good Sam Comment from : chumgrinder25 |
Thanks for a great video I have Good Sam but have not needed it yet Some auto insurance companies charge you for a claim if you use their roadside assistance Comment from : Gerald Hettel |
I got to say, we had State farm we still do in the first day that I bought my new four car trailer out of Vermont I was just crossing back into the border of New Hampshire where we live with my son and a deer shot out and clobbered my front end triple a was willing to tow the vehicle but I had to pay someone to actually tow the trailer $300 to my house and triple a covered it for me So the fact that they paid for and I didn't even know I had that type of benefit was really great and we've stayed customers of theirs for a long time Comment from : Keith Remillard |
I have been towing RV’s since 2006, and had nothing but bad experiences with AAA roadside assistance From being in a place where their service was unavailable, to a “tire professional” responding to help me without the proper tools Because I live in California and want to avoid the DMV, I keep my AAA membership current I’ve learned to be self sufficient and as always, if I break down and can’t fix it myself, I’ll call a tow service or roadside service direct Comment from : blacktank81 |
Had a similar experience with Good Sam Truck had fuel issue on Christmas Eve Called GS and they would only authorize towing for 1 mile I paid to have to Ram dealership 30 miles away They refused reimbursement because they said "the nearest service center was 1 mile away" The service center expected to work on a diesel truck - a battery exchange shop down the street Never again with them Comment from : Terry Pickering |
I had a blow out on my truck, covered by Good Sam I called them and could not get a tow in Richmond, Virginia I got it fixed at the dealer, which was about 8 miles away Good Sam told me to submit the bill and they would reimburse me I did and all I got from them was a bill to renew my coverage! I cancelled my Good Sam I now have roadside assistance from USAA and they have taken care of me several times, no muss, no fuss Comment from : Corey Reynolds |
I can't say as I follow your logic as it seems to shape shift thorough the video I do agree with your conclusion to just buy towing insurance through your auto insurer if you feel you need it, but you seem to be implying that you will likely get more payout in towing charges than you pay in premiums That is not how business works Overwhelmingly, they collect more in premiums than they pay out You travel more than most and bought lousy Marathon tires, so you are a special case The vast majority of people never file a claimbrbrAlso, as you found out, you do a lot better just calling yourself than going through a third party like AAA or Sam's that pays a paltry sum to the towing company It is not a question of being macho, it is question of getting someone out there to help you pronto Just call and pay for the service with all the premium money you saved over the years Comment from : Tom Griebe |
Yes I have had 2 very very bad situations flat and battery now service can't even reach managerbrI try to be a nice guy doesn't always work Comment from : bruce Gordon |
Looked like my tirebrKristi vs doesn't carebrI was told to try to call my own tow truck giving upbrDon't know what to do Comment from : bruce Gordon |
All these corporate programs are rip offs You pay They ignore you when you go to make a claim Just like insurance You pay They deny claims That's how our economy works now Totally corrupt pfft Comment from : Gunga La Gunga |
If you have to depend on another human, you are going to be disappointed People don't care anymore And if you do get someone to show up, no one knows their trade anymore, so they will likely make the problem WORSE lol From the Pepsi Me generation, to this horrible selfie selfish me me me Zucked iphone Facebook population we have now Narcissistic personality disorder is the real epidemic It's only gonna get worse folks Be self sufficient You won't be able to rely on anyone Good luck Comment from : Gunga La Gunga |
(not being able to find a tow truck) I had a similar issue with AAA and honestly the problem rest with the unprofessional office in Macon Ga I called my home office and Texas and they set things right I did have to front the cost of the tow for my 5th wheel but I got a reimbursement in 2 weeks No issues Comment from : nickyannajones 70 |
Was broke down In a place with only one tow truck within a reasonable distance My credit card towing service pissed off the tow truck owner so much He told me all about it Comment from : Dustin Evans |
Disappointed that you had issues with both AAA and GoodSamSince I have both I'll check with AAA to confirm Thanks for the info Comment from : Victor Lopez |
We had two companies tell us they would not come out to change a tire forest river and good Sam Comment from : T |
Take the cash you pay for this garbage service over the years and total it against what you had to pay for those remedies over the years? Guarantee you would have done better with no service and just call a tow/tire change service when needed Comment from : Leroy Jenkins |
Car insurance company I have dealt with is terrible for rvs Comment from : Charlie |
Call me paranoid, but when we travel with our travel trailer, I carry 2 spare tires since it's a tandem axle I figure if I get a blow out and it takes the other tire out, I'm not stuck with only one spare to get back on the road In addition, I even carry an extra leaf spring and hardware in case that scenario ever happens Look at some video's on YouTube It's not uncommon to get a broken leaf spring when traveling down some real bumpy roads, especially when boondocking Imagine having a broken leaf spring in the middle of nowhere Try getting a leaf spring at your local auto parts store Not happening Took me 2 weeks to order one just to have as a spare I do have AAA towing with RV Never had to use it But, I can see where any of these clubs have a problem getting someone out to tow a large RV No problem to tow your truck, but if you have a large travel trailer or 5th wheel, forget it You might be on the side of the road for days trying to get a tow truck out to tow you I always say be prepared Comment from : Gary P |
I had the same experience with AAA We had a blowout outside Mount Shasta City California (5miles) and the could not find some one to change a tire Excuse was we don’t have the equipment to perform that service We also called around to see if we could find someone Low and behold we found a tow company that could come out, but because of load of calls it would be 4 hours A older motor home pulled over on the side of I 5 for a minute About 15 Minutes later Santa gave us a present An older gentleman with a big white beard stopped and said he had seen our deli a when he pulled over on the side of the road He immediately went to work and we were back on the road in around 30 minutes I paid him the money the tow company was going to charge, he did not ask for payment but fair is fair, and I called the tow company to let them know that our issue was resolved and they didn’t need to come out During this whole process we had explained to AAA that we had 2 small children in the back seat as well as our dog, and my wife was 69 and I was 70 Comment from : Randy DeShane |
You could never ever ever count on State Farm Insurance we had a very bad experience with State Farm we ended up filing a $29,000 insurance claim for damages State Farm coughed up $2000 so we got stuck paying 27,000 run run run from State Farm Comment from : gregory sweatman |
Looking for an update Do you still have State Farm Roadside Assistance? Comment from : Tom McL |
Check eng light Step one disconnect battery and reconnect after 30 seconds This resets your electronic control module to the default setting Comment from : Mike Dunn |
I have had AAA Rv coverage There normal people who change tires are not equipped to change heavy Rv tires & especially brduallies They do not have the heavy duty Jack's or brair tools to remove the lug nutsbr When you call them for assistance make sure you tell them this for Rv service & they will send a truck equipped for the jobbr It could take longer forbrthem to find a tow company brwith what you need to fix the problem but they have always gotten a truck therebr Another issue is ask where brthe call center is located that you are talking tobr That person may have no idea about your location orbrthe road current road conditions, or the time zonebryour are calling frombr I once had a call center in Hawaii Luckily I broke down in the Antelope Valley br& knew the tow companies brthat AAA used I gave them a couple of choices & they contacted one who took the call Comment from : Bill Byrne |
Just canceled my Good Sams for me and my brother and my Dads rvs What a bunch of swindlers Comment from : John Gilmour |
We've had the same experience with Good Sam We had catastrophic engine failure on our motor coach while Towing our stacker trailer Good Sam told us they could not find a towing company that can help us My wife called three different companies near us they were all willing to do it one of them said the Good Sam had called them already but they were not paying them enough We offered to pay for the towing ourselves and they were there within the hour We later put a claim through Good Sam and the reimburse this for the towing Comment from : Robert Hernandez |
It's a LOT easier to call and pay instead of having "roadside assistance" Comment from : Jeff Morency |

Thank you so much for posting this video, and for all the trouble you went to to make it I'm now feeling wiser and better off because of these valuable experiences you've taken the time to share with people like me who are slow learners and have no experience at traveling with a camper Comment from : Joe Kolb |
I had AAA and a lock-out problem I called and they said they would send someone right away Two hours later they called and said they didnt have anyone available with that skill Hours after that they got someone, just a guy in a tshirt and his own car and he couldnt get the car opened He did really try and gave up But I had an idea and we both did it and got it opened Point being, paying for service doesnt mean anything It depends who is available and what price they can agree about I THOUGHT AAA meant having contractors who already agreed with their terms but its not the case In a way its a giant ripoff I have a feeling a lot of people may not know their own insurance may cover roadside already and its worth checking out ANDtheir credit card Many bank cards come with roadside assistance and if you have it its listed under the terms of your included free travel insurance and as I remember there are strict limitations on what they will do I also had Good Sam for some years but never had to use them so I cant judge Comment from : cvcoco |
Your Good Sams experience could happen with AAA too What happens is they can't find someone willing to do it for the price Good Sams (or AAA) are will to pay This happens especially during peak hours We had an experience when my wife broke down on the Nebraska/Kansas boarder with AAA They couldn't find anyone nearby and it was going to be hours and hours So we called around and found someone nearby and paid out of pocket, it was under $100 and worth the piece of mind that my wife would be back on the road That driver explained that he stopped working with AAA because their compensation wasn't worth his time Comment from : Daemon D |
I was planning to get AAA or good Sam , instead I bought a insurance for my teardrop with towing included Thanks! Comment from : Olger Medina |

I have been a AAA member for over 30 years and unfortunately the service has changed for the worse over time I started full time rving two years ago The first time I needed to call AAA for my vehicle it took three hours to get a truck out to me It was dark out and I was on on an isolated road The next time I needed roadside assistance was three weeks ago I broke down on highway 1 on a very busy Sunday AAA has no idea what to do with RVs and when you give them the correct information about what needs to be done, they either ignore it or the computer corrects and takes out valuable information needed to get you properly towed brIt took six hours, a very competent dispatcher from the tow truck company and many incredibly frustrating phone calls to AAA before I was finally towed My membership is up and I switched to Good Sam I’m not really hopeful that they will be much better but I cannot stay with AAA brI hope this helps Comment from : Karren Tart |
I rolled into a gas station in my RV on fumes into "Goddard" Kansas and said thank you GOD!! 😁 From now on I never I never roll under a half tank! 😉 Comment from : Campgoer One |
