I live in a new neighborhood in The Villages Florida Most of us are about the same age between 55 and 70 My neighbors are great and very helpful I have a bad hip and have not had it fixed yet so I am more to my house than not But our neighborhood is very active as is the whole of the villages with 3000 clubs and pools in every area I believe we have about a 100 pools and 70 golf courses And growing I personally enjoy the summers because it is less crowded and it is easier to get into venues like restaurants But our snowbirds are a big part of our community and I don't mind either way I have been here a year and I really love it here I've had very few issues and I love my house And I love Florida If there is a downside since the last couple years hurricanes the insurance has gone up But I lived in Colorado before and I don't find it significantly different Though our insurance for vehicles is higher here because there are more accidents There are some people who should not be driving and do Comment from : karen stasik |

I've heard that homes in a 55+ community are more difficult to sell since only a subset of the population qualifies Any thoughts? Comment from : John G |

I still don't understand plus 55 communities To me it's like saying you're a bigot against people younger than 55 that you would want to sequester yourself from Why? Comment from : James |

They're dispar discrimination with the HOA at del oro estates Yuma AZ, the hoa fees i could have fixed the ac, as never would have paid until they either clean 2464 w del plata ln property or make the people that don't own the property but park as if it's theirs Comment from : Froy |
True my elderly parents, now its just my elderly parent lives in del oro estate in Yuma AZ, and with new people moving even below 55 feel like being discriminated by hoa There's a young lady not even in her 50s and parks her car in the garage of a home that's not her property for 4 yrs and not once has she bothered cleaning the brush, water trees, it's a safety hazard yet the hoa doesn't enforce the by laws Comment from : Froy |

I'm 43 years-old I'm already looking forward to a 55+ community because older people are low-drama in the areas that matter to me: crime, drugs, crappy kids etc I currently own a home and I am having to sell it because the neighborhood has changed to the point that we now have drug overdoses 5 doors down I'll take a nosey old woman harassing me, over an entitled Section 8 POS with 6 kids and no husband any day of the week Comment from : L Alexander |

Thanks for this video My sister-in-law is 80 and just bought a condo in a place like that in Tinley Park - a more upscale hood I told her to get the meeting minutes, budget, rules, etc before she bought, but she did not I hope it turns out OK Comment from : MAD Skills University | Learn, Grow & Help Others! |

I am a sedentary person who loves being alone I guess I need to have my own house and my own interests Comment from : Patricia Morgan |
I live with a HOA now and they can be very annoying, but if you want/ need someone to enforce the rules, they are your people They take care of the neighbor to neighbor arguments by being the bad guys Additionally, if somebody is counting your cars, or noticing, you have a minor living with you longer than is allowed by the rules and that ticks you off, just follow the rules I think of 55+ community offers security, which random neighborhoods don’t necessarily have You don’t hear about us much criminal activity in the neighborhood and I think that hasn’t been sufficiently covered Comment from : Mary Nussio |

In California, one of the big issues is most of these communities have an asset requirement For example, one popular example requires the primary on the deed to have 125k in assets above the price of the house Crazy Comment from : RamsnDodgersfan |
My wife and I decided that when a doctor tells us that one of us is close to the end of life, instead of saying that you’re on your way out, we would just say “it’s time to move to a 55+ community”😅 Comment from : Thomas Miller |

MOST HOA S ARE BROKE IN S FL Comment from : joe banks |

This REALLY helped me make my decision as I was in the process of selling my home to purchase in a senior community! As I did the numbers, I just couldn't justify me paying $2,76000 per year in HOA fees (I'm 55 years old) 10 years of HOA fees at 23000 per month would be $27,600, 20 years $55,200 and 30 years $82,800 and that's if the HOA fees don't increase but we all know they will PLEASE do the numbers before making any decisions I'm going to stay where I am! brThank you SO much for your informative video! Comment from : Love Bug |
a friend just moved to a 55+ apartment - she's 82 I think and very active nad loves being around people I visited once and will visit again tomorrow but I was interested until I realized most of the price is the activities- I'm not that interested in planned events - I'll go on a cruise for that LOL! I liked the fact t hat it was inside access, quiet, mail room on site, people around but I don't want the constant planned activities Comment from : Susanna Smith |

There are busy bodies wherever you go Comment from : Johnny Cruz |
I live in a regular neighborhood in California and our HOA treats our neighborhood like their tiny little kingdom and they are in charge of us peasants that live here They are pretty much hated by the entire community That is what makes me hesitant to move into a 55 plus community, I feel like the HOA would be at gestapo level Comment from : Slobbergoat |
Nobody like the elderly or these communities Comment from : Alfreds Ink LLC |

We love our active community I can see your points We are very active and have met great people I would really encourage folks to do things and meet people outside of the community as well We have a really solid management team and HOA board so we have not had any issues brbrBest decision at this time for us We are going on 25 years and love it! Comment from : Randi Trojan |
Parents almost moved into one of these, but my family came as a 'set' and I was two years too young even though quieter than many of those elders Years later mom decided she was glad we didn't move because the shopping was so much farther away from where we did settle Comment from : Vegan Conservative |
I'm an introvert, but find I like seeing kids playing now and again Wonder if there would be less ageism if the younger and older generations were not so segregated Younger should be learning from experienced elders while elders get a kick of Vitality of Life from being around the younger As it is the young kids see old age as a scary thing to be avoided as much as possible That also lays a foundation for 'the blame game' Comment from : Vegan Conservative |
Lived in 2 55+ communities One in an apartment and condo It was not a good fit for us Most people in these communities are more like 75 and over age group relieving high school, experiencing mental and physical decline It’s perfect if you are experiencing this phase of life, you are not alone and you fit in with one another Most if not all, eat, shop and party(lots of alcohol) If you like that it will be a perfect match for you If you enjoy nature, fishing the outdoors peace and quite, people of all ages and culture differences it will not work for you The most important to consider is that this age group of anywhere of mid 70’s and over all experiencing the same phase of life If you are mentally, physically and spiritually brbalanced you will not fit in with the Cognitive decline and will be hell for you It’s great people who in this phase of life have a place to gather, live and enjoy there final stage of life It’s not for me at the age of 60 years old Comment from : Doni Rae |
In 1969 my grandma took me to see future Sun City We drove way out into the desert and in the middle of nowhere there was a parking lot and a small lake In the middle of the lake there was a building on a platform with a long dock leading out to it Inside the building was a huge display layout of the future Sun City It was beautiful, with tiny houses like in Monopoly all around the roads, trees and plants and small lakes You could walk around the whole display Comment from : Stand Down |

I agree, people with too much time on their hand can be a problem Comment from : J B |

Where I live I just notice my neighbors dying around me Kind of depressing actually Comment from : Jeff Walther |
I live in a house and not happy and I am aware moving to one of these communities wouldn't make me any happier I didn't have social skills when I was a small boy and as a old man I still don't People can't change their personalities Comment from : Thomas |
Yes, 55+ people are people too They have flaws Choose your community wisely Many people buy without being diligent But don't let the nay sayers convince you to ignore these communities Had i known a community like the one I chose existed, I would have retired earlier HOA (Rec fees) are low, lots to do, many many good people No, it's not a panacea But neither is life in an ordinary community Comment from : John Lemma |
mrs cravitz sp i was thinking the same thing when you said that! my friend in a 55 plus has a nosy neighbor she told my friend ' see you have a gentlemen caller ' Comment from : 2009jadeorchid |

I choose not to get out and participate in all the activities I’m very happy doing my creativity projects at home It’s nice to know I can if I want, but hanging around with others all the time is not necessary for me I’m an introvert and being home is great! Comment from : Susan McMichael |

Rules, rules, rules and over enforcement of rules Living in a fish bowl Not for me but glad that others love this style of living Comment from : B A |
I've been in essentially 5 +55's I do alot inside my house, inside my community and outside of my community and have lived in now 20 locations (mostly in commune type situations) It always comes down to you need to be ok with rules, you need to be ok with expenses and you need to be ok with living without privacy People who are doing nothing are doing you The last point is actually very big One thing that seems prominent in Florida is the number of single women that live in these places and that doesn't usually mean independent These people will likely be your rumor mill and will likely be your gripe mill and will likely be asking intrusive questions that are absolutely none of their business The HOA thing is also important One thing to bare in mind is that boards tend to have agendas and they tend to surround money Conservative boards tend to be tight wads and provide the bear minimum where liberal ones tend to spend more The conservative ones tend to be what I call poverty boards and are likely underfunded (especially with reserves) One other thing to consider in regards to retirees in my experience, a very high percentage of retirees really can't afford to be retired (mentally, physically or financially) They can be a major problem when it comes to proper funding They want the benefits of living in an HOA, but not the responsibility Comment from : Brian Atkinson |
Sounds depressing to me I think I’ll just keep my single-family house with an acre of land in the suburbs Comment from : George Harley Davidson Rider |
There are many “busy bodies” and they aren’t all in the 55+ communities Comment from : Rhonda Smith |
one huge plus to having an HOA is stopping goobers from parking their cars in their yard on blocks removing tires, doors, hoods from their cars and just plain destroying a neighborhood The negative is having Karen's in your neighborhoodmeasuring private hedges, etc Pretty much everything you say is true Comment from : Retiredandlovinglife |
Can you mention homeshares for seniors? Comment from : KM |
Busy body neighbors are no problem I just answer the door wearing only a towel They don't come back Comment from : Mark Richards |

Thanks for this in-depth video It has validated everything for me I almost moved into one of these places and my prayers were answered and I was saved the headaches by God I am a creative, low, key private person and without needing groups and activities I am so busy doing the things I love I also work and would continue to do so for as long as I can and I work from home But you, the videomaker assumed that peace-loving, introverts are unhappy I have to disagree Psychologically speaking, people who have no life, are bored to death because they have no creative sides to express themselves or are not willing learn things for free online, for example, they tend to put their noses into others' business Running around in parties does not make one happy Happiness is an inside job People who are unhappy, tend to get involved in everything they can because they believe that things outside of them can bring joy and happiness It does not Attaining inner bliss is the path to true happiness I love, private, low-key and thoughtful neighbors and if I can strike friendship with one of them, that's all I may need Just my two cents I thank you again for an honest outlook on 55+ communities Comment from : FBegum-Music&Beyond |
When I was younger I used to be a kid Comment from : Ronald Hall |
I hate being around old people, ie 50 and up Mind you, I’m early 60s but I find folks younger than me already old They practice being old for decades just so they’ll be good at being old when they do get old ;) Comment from : Chris Connors |
After reading quite a few of the comments it sounds like these 55+ community's are for the people that peeked in high school Comment from : Todd Warriner |

Seizure Village is where Karen and Ken go to die No thanks Comment from : Huey Wallop |

Coming from a region with older people taking off to warm states for the winter, I had never considered that their pals Down South and in the Southwestern US might really miss them when they depart for a few months in the summer I can see how that would be kind of a drag for activity-minded folks who grow attached to their snowbird amigos It must also be something of a bummer when those same snowbirds return for Thanksgiving week and do not return until New Year celebrations are over, or do most of them stay in Arizona for Thanksgiving/ Christmas? Comment from : John Avellar |
I'm always pleased to encourage my Trump loving friends here in California who arebrplanning a move to Arizona 🙂 Comment from : Robert Montgomery |

Am in a 55+ now with no amenities, no pool, and no social acitivities whatsoever- unless you count reporting things on your neighbors a fun activitiy The people are mostly sour and unfriendly The few who are nice, I have befriended but it is not what I thought they were Very disappointed and looking to move Comment from : therealtoni |
How insulting is her verbiage “These people” she says…I actually find this video insulting Just because people live in senior citizens or 55+ community doesn’t mean that they’re ignorant We know what’s going on and we don’t need anyone like you to tell us Comment from : Molly N |

Ugghhhhh cmon thongs are for young pretty girls with a body and a nice booty NOT a saggy wrinkled a$$ Comment from : Isabella The Pink Poodle |
I don’t really care about activities with old people to be honest; what I look forward to is getting away from young families with little screaming kids or teenagers and loud music We look forward to traveling and golfing and cycling together as a couple We just want to live in a gated community with an HOA that keeps the riff raff out We have HOA’s for our under 55 neighborhood too so it’s not really a big deal Rules are a good thing Comment from : P |
NO- the HOA IS A SCAMCON You'll be very sorry if you join an HOAthe FEES NEVER STOP THE RULES ARE RIDCULOUS Comment from : dancalm peaceful |
After working 8 to 5 for over 30+ years and putting up with emails and my phone ringing with someone ALWAYS wanting something I can tell you I DISDAIN people I don't want ANYONE knowing what I do or ANYTHING about me I ALSO do NOT like constant RISING FEESAND THE RIDICULOUS RULES Comment from : dancalm peaceful |
We moved part time to a 55 plus community in Coachella valley (California) and love all the activities The only downside is that we are around lots of seniors-) and there is not much diversity But we can easily leave and trael - plus I substitute teach a few times a month (I am retired teacher) It is also much easier to get in shape - although women outnumber men 5 to 1 in these classes I don't understand why old guys don't want to exercise -) Comment from : d landis |

My parents & I lived in a 55+ mobile home park in 1975 in California--even tho I was 28, I was grandfathered in since I lived with my parents & they couldn't do anything about kicking me out I continued living there until my parents passed (1994 & 2009) In 2020, Covid hit & I moved the following year as the rent skyrocketed & I couldn't afford it Comment from : Charlene Varada |
