And small town grocers get away with charging higher food prices just because nobody wants to travel 50 or more miles out of town to larger cities (especially in winter) every time they need something from the grocery store And can expect bare shelves every year when folks not yet used to preparing in advance start stocking up at the last minute in preparation for the winter months and whenever mountain passes are closed due to ice or blizzards and fog reduce visibility so commercial trucks carrying any new stock suffer delays, can't get through or they get flipped over and wrecked by high winds and/or icy slide offs br brNot exactly a good state for food aficionados either -- just a very basic (bland) meat n potatoes n sweet corn n beans state Good luck finding truly good places to eat out (they are rare and usually require 50 miles or greater travel to get to the few larger cities that have them) Otherwise, you have your typical fast food chains or local greasy spoons and truck stops Landlocked so no fresh seafood either and what gets shipped in is far more expensive You want truly good food -- make it yourself (if you can get the fresh ingredients or can order the non-perishables needed online) You want variety over basic eggs, beef, pork, and chicken for protein -- become a hunter, trapper, or go fishing for trout and sturgeon br brFor self-sufficiency and homesteader folks (especially newbies looking to get started): Very short growing season (and depending upon area may have to deal with soil/sand/rock/solid ancient lava rock-bed issues and water is not always easy to come by or easy to drill for; know the geology of the land you intend to purchase and any water rights, etc) Home gardening and self sufficient farming can be very challenging starting out even for those experienced but used to having longer growing seasons as well as be aware of the need to ensure animals (pets and food animals both) are well protected from the elements and their drinking water not frozen brbr brCell phone and wi-fi users -- good luck!
