The mighty coaxial driver is the ideal unit for a center channel speaker because it's a single point source that doesn't suffer from the off-axis issues that a standard speaker turned on its side will havebrI bought this one around 14 years ago and I'm pretty sure it's out of production now But it is a very good driver and perfectly suited for the job I have in mindbrThat is to set up a rear speaker directly behind my listening position and wire that into the side speaker's positive terminals This is the so called Hafler circuit that only outputs the difference between the two channels Often used as a low cost "surround" setup, it adds a subtle ambience to the sound field that's quite pleasantbrAlong with that, I'll be designing and building a new transmission line subwoofer that this rear speaker will mount in This will give me the opportunity to compare the transmission line to the vented box I made a few years ago and see if there are any real advantagesbrNew CD's! ELP, Tom Petty and Bob Seger Long time favourites of mine that regularly listen to today Comment from : John Heisz - Speakers and Audio Projects |

hello sir I thank you and other people for having a hifi ,audio technicians channel I'm addicted to sound from a child I loved headphones because with lil money you get somewhat good sound but when I was 21 years old a friend of mine gave me a set of mission 770s I don't know if you familiar with them, changed the hole game for me I got introduced for the first time to hifi the woofer was a seas brand, the tweeter I'm guessing was seas as weal the sound of this speakers was crisp i also design my own speakers for my home and family and I forgot seas still around but really what I'm trying to say is that seas is hifi Comment from : Hugo Diaz |

Coax drivers brOne could build a phenomenal immersive rig quite inexpensively brA multi-channel Atmos receiver, eleven Kef coax (any reasonable coax), supported by a solid subbr brYeah A simple rig like that could be quite impressive, especially so with immersive material Comment from : FOH-3663 |

Yep, the horizontal bop silliness! The whole point is to better serve multiple listening positions brbrYet, the horizontal bop throws an acoustic mess of hit or miss summation brbrQuestion; Center? No center?brbrA dedicated center does offload the L and R, and dedicates each three to their individual acoustic tasks brbrAlbeit technically superior, it may or may not be appreciated brbrBut a single source, serving multiple listening positions, left-to-right, fore and aft, anchors dialog to the screen, without the combing nulls that accompany the L/R throwing a phantom centers brbrI've ultimately settled on it depends on my listening distance, with closer being a dedicated center further away, no center brbrThe LCRs in our big system can be oriented vertically, or horizontally brAn 8" B&C coax, w/12" Acoustic Elegance drivers above and below, in a 44" tall, 115lb MTM brSeaton Cat12c, 2kw, active three ways brbrEither straight up or on their side, doesn't matter so, so handybrThe coax handles from 250 on up, so just killer in more nearfield applications brbrThe simple way the energy propagates into the room, coax type platforms have advantages brJohn, of course you're absolutely right, those advantages lend themselves perfectly with center channel duty brbr(fwiw, right now I prefer no center, combing and all, just better at a distance) Comment from : FOH-3663 |

That ELP album is one of my all time favourites I had it on tape and it got played a lot on my Sony Walkman I never heard of HR Giger until one of my class mates in college told me who he was and the connection between Aliens and the Brain Salad Surgery album As soon as he told me I had a v8 moment and said "Of course!" Definitely interested to see what your transmission line design looks like Frugal horns seem to be a nice update on the classic Voigt horn, using driver position to avoid 3rd order mode and mass loading port to roll off 5th order and above You can deliberately damp the 1st order mode by undersizing TL area with a little bass lift to get a good transient response Putting port at back causes delay to avoid phase cancellation of 5th order and higher, according to David McBeans Hornresp program Horn gives only 1dB of boost, but that's good as it means roll off is 4th order Extended sides at rear allow 1D mode to interface with 3D roombrSo, using TL 1D design methods is definitely better than reflex 0D design methods even though on paper they are similar in response Comment from : Martin Garrish |

That's cool playing with out of phase channels Did you ever try a Polk sda set up? I did around 1990 or so it had an interesting effect on the sound stage It may be easier to do it electrically like the Carver Sonic hologram or Hughes's SRS But I don't know if one method is more effective than the other Comment from : Greg Matula |
