It should not be confounded that the low wages and long hours were consequences of a lack of legislation It is evident from the records that society was destitute and unproductive to a degree simply unimaginable nowadays The absence of capital meant that there was little in terms of means of production to operate, and plenty of hands to do it And without said means of production, a family living in a small plot of land, without fertilizers, without pesticides, without modern crop varieties and weather forecasts and silos Could only hope to labour year round for a meager feed for it's family and perhaps a few possessions to replace the ones inherited from their dead parents The positive improvements in work life were achieved in correlation (sometimes delayed) with gains in economic productivity and accumulation of capital only possible because of the wonders of modern mass production and industrial machinery For every worker toiling in a factory there were several still just about scraping by in extreme poverty, and even those in most factories would hardly produce enough for a family if only the father worked even if there was to be 0 profit on the capital investment by the owner It was a dreadful time, but the overall message should be one of gratitude for those generations that built our comfortable world of today, for without the machines our world relies on, we'd be no better than they were Comment from : Anderson Klein |

I'd rather be a farmer Comment from : tuphdc |

In proportion to the mental energy he spent, the man who creates a new invention receives but a small percentage of his value in terms of material payment, no matter what fortune he makes, no matter what millions he earns But the man who works as a janitor in the factory producing that invention, receives an enormous payment in proportion to the mental effort that his job requires of him And the same is true of all men between, on all levels of ambition and ability The man at the top of the intellectual pyramid contributes the most to all those below him, but gets nothing except his material payment, receiving no intellectual bonus from others to add to the value of his time The man at the bottom who, left to himself, would starve in his hopeless ineptitude, contributes nothing to those above him, but receives the bonus of all of their brains Such is the nature of the “competition” between the strong and the weak of the intellect Such is the pattern of “exploitation” for which you have damned the strongbr—Galt’s Speech Comment from : lamalamalex |

Interesting but sad documentary! The British Empire prides itself on ending Slavery, but in reality, these Cotton Mills were just another form of Slavery The Mill owners, instead of owning slaves, gave just enough for the workers to survive They also engaged in Slavery, indirectly, by purchasing Cotton from the US Southern Plantations Farmers were basically no different The Aristocracy owns 30 of the land Most of the farmers were tenant farmers and the Landlords had unrestricted control, thus another form of slavery! Comment from : John T |

Canadian policing and our justice system is Victorian This is one of the reasons why I continue to suffer the way I do Why for example the RCMP uses dirty tricks and disruption to get their man more than the FBI Extrajudicial punishment is far more widely accepted in our justice system than the American one People have no idea that the attitudes have been passed down through the last century While Scotland Yard and the intelligence community in Britain moved on, Canada hung on to old ideas This happens to all immigrants for example, they get stuck in time Maclean's Magazine said it in 1979, RCMP and Canadian police forces are addicted to using disruption and dirty tricks on their targets It's a cheap and easy way to get them to off themselves while simultaneously waterboarding them for information on the who, what, where and how of their entire life and community they belong in Community Oriented Policing is based on this garbage: torturing the most vulnerable so you can listen in and gather information illegally without a warrant If you do it across the country in enough communities, you have a pulse on what's going on Problem is, people like me are the victims Poor and vulnerable families are born with this so they can torture a few of them later on to misuse for their own purposes This practice needs to end But before they end it, they have to admit that it exists which they refuse to do Comment from : Tony Branco |
