You're funny I just saw this video Just so you know, Americans call jam "jam" if it is basically fruit that has been pressed with sugar and pectin added Jelly is fruit juice with sugar and pectin added (bonus: "preserves are basically jam but with bigger chunks) 😋brbrGood video Really looking forward to my first train trip Comment from : CG Patriot |

Thank you for this I booked the Silver Meteor (I know, not quite as scenic) to go from NYC to Orlando (I'll be riding the Emprei Service from Roch to NYC, which I'll enjoy the Great Lakes and hudson region!) This will be my first train ride and I'm excited (trip is in Aug) When I've told coworkers, family, friends I keep getting asked "Why not fly" well, I've always wanted to take the train, and just the thought of the restrictions of what I can bring on the plane gets me anxiety NOt to mention I did fly once to Florday and as you said, it was boring, get on, a few hours later you get off with no scenery And the security you have to go through is ridiculous I'm looking forward to this trip, relaxing for a couple days (so I will be on the train a total of four days, two going, two coming back) and watching the scenery and reading, writing in my journal I'm taking this time as an electronics detox as well! Comment from : Lori Witkop |

I'm glad you had such a great experience on Amtrak and here in the US Amtrak may not be perfect, but it's ours and we love it all the same There really is no better way to see America than from a big comfy seat on a train, with a cup of coffee or a beer, a big window, and a good book There's something undeniably peaceful and magical about riding the train Comment from : DustedThrusters |

I'm a 65-year-old American who has ridden on Amtrak only once in my life 45 years ago Now considering the possibility of taking the train from Kansas City, Missouri to Oakland, California, I wanted to know if riding coach for 51 hours would be doable After watching your delightful and informative video, I think the answer is yes As a native Californian who grew up in Pacific Grove, it was really nice to hear familiar city names--San Francisco, Emeryville, Monterey And yes, Salinas (There really is nothing to do in Salinas, except catch a bus) One final comment: The difference between jam and jelly in the US is not a mystery Jam contains chunks of the cooked fruit, while jelly is clear, having all the solids strained out Both condiments require pectin to thicken them I subscribed to your channel and am looking forward to learning much more about your travels in my country Cheers! Comment from : Frieda Bacon |
|
The whole "jelly/jam" thing confused me As an American I can say we have both jelly and jam, though some Americans incorrectly use the terms interchangeably as they are similar in taste and use However, I was under the impression that you folks in the UK used "jelly" for gelatin-based foods So, what we in the US would call Jell-O, or if it's in the smaller, tougher, snack form, gummies We would never refer to either of those as jelly Comment from : Nathan Frentzel |

thanks for the video, i am planning an amtrak rail journey across and back this year Regards Mike in County Durham Comment from : Mike Clare |

Very much, to the point(s) Thank you very much for sharing My first Amtrak train ride was a private rail car on the California Zephyr, round trip Second trip was a family bedroom westbound Zephyr with return flight And now, 20+ years later we’re circumnavigating the USA, snagging two $299 USA Rail Passes, riding coach and think this might be our best ever train adventure brWe’ve completed so many different train rides across Europe, so we thought, why not the USA? Thanks Tom for the tips I am planning a trip from Martinez, CA to Baltimore, MD for Christmas I have not heard of any problems of lost checked luggage Since that is a common problem with flying, I wonder what happens if Amtrak loses my luggage? Your video is the third video I have watched about riding across country on the train Comment from : miriam campos |

I love this video, thank you! It gave me a peace of mind! My husband and I will be taking our first train ride from Alliance, Ohio to Grand Junction, Colorado by way of coach Our first stop on the way to GJC we have to stop through Chicago and check in our luggage for the California Zephyr My question is, will we be directed as to where to check it in and for this journey, would you recommend us to sit on the left side headed west? Appreciate any advice I can get, thank you! Comment from : Cucas In The Kitchen! |

I thoroughly enjoyed your videos Unfortunately, I’m a little to old to travel that way but I lived vicariously through you guys I travel first class and I really enjoy it but it is expensive By the way, here in America we have jelly, jam and preserves The jelly is made with fruit juice The jam is made with juice and chop fruit The one I like most is preserves, it has larger pieces of fruit and doesn’t last as long because of this I did notice, that you were eating Smucker’s, my favorite brand I have had more expensive preserves but I’ll always come back to Smucker’s Good luck to you on your next trip 😄❤️ Comment from : B H |

I need to travel to the Bay Area last minute, and airplane tickets are very expensive right now Looking at different travel pages, I randomly found Amtrak tickets for half the price than the cheapest flight I could find for the days I need to be there I have never traveled via train long-distance in the US, and was a bit worried about the experience But your video has been very reassuring, and now I just got my tickets for a mini Amtrak adventure in less than a week! I'm actually boarding in Utah, so this is just a fraction of the trip, only about 18 hours, and sadly not the nicest views But we're pretty excited about it, and are already thinking that in the future we need to do the other side, from here to Chicago!! Comment from : Daily Lovejuice |
|
Thanks for your tips With the cost of flying so high more than doubled since last year I am considering Amtrak California to East CoastbrFor your info here in California, we call it, jam, preserves, or jelly with each being different (Jelly is made from the juice, Jam some fruit solid and preserves with the highest fruit solids) Since California has so much agriculture some farms sell their own preserves made from their own fruit Which is the best Comment from : jeff knight |
|
Thank you for the reminder that we need to enjoy the travel and we have gotten used to instant every thing and not taking time to see the beauty around us we’re so busy it’s ridiculous thanks again Comment from : Mari Aranda |

This is a wonderful video! I'm planning a trip from Seattle to Denver in September and I loved the practical advice and enthusiasm you share I'm 82 and planning on going coach and this helped lessen some of my concerns about doing so The price difference between coach and roomettes is prohibitive I've done trips along the west coast (15 years ago) and really enjoyed just watching the world go by One time I read 2 books while on the train Another time, after a particularly stressful year, I slept for two days!! I love talking to all the interesting people also Comment from : Gordon Miller |
|
Absolutely right there are so many people that never give trains a chance and they have no idea what they are missing I've taken the Auto Train to Florida I've taken the Southwest cheap to California and I will never forget the observation car on the Southwest Chief and that was over 25 years ago people do not know what they're missing by being too much of a snob to go on Amtrak Comment from : Mel Tuchman |
|
Thank you I’m traveling Sunday - Redding, CA to Huntington, WV Coast Starlight to Portland OR, Empire Builder to Chicago, IL, and Cardinal to Huntington I’ve been watching tons of videos and honesty, yours seems the most helpful! I’m so excited Comment from : Annie Bakaleinikoff |

Great vid lots of useful info If you or anyone watching could answer a question or two pleasebrDivorced and the kids have left home i am know free to travel America by trainbrThere is a ticket for $500 that allows 10 journeys but you sit in coach, i am a larger human ( 6' 7" 350lb) how much legroom is there or is it a no go straight off the bat?brSecondly what months of the year are the quietest times for US rail travel, i have heard October, is this truebrThank you in advance for any responses Comment from : Porkchop25 LLL |
|
Jam and jelly are two different things in the US Jam is one half mashed fruit solids, one half sugar Jelly doesn't have any whole fruit - just fruit juice made from strained fruit that has been cooked down I'm about to do SF to Chicago, Chicago to NY - a trip I've wanted to do my whole life I can't wait Comment from : Lana Nieves |
|
I'm planning to travel slow and get off the train to stay in places for days or weeks Is it difficult to book train tickets on-the-go, or are we talking multi-month queues? Comment from : Roti |
