In June 2023 we are going to see our daughter grad from RN Nursing spcollege & we will be taking our "first time" train ride from Tacoma Washington to Salt Lake City Utah Coastal Starlight Bedroom I looked up on the website & it said there will be a 4+ hours wait in Sacramento for the train switch How come there are No coffee or food shops inside Sacramento train station? 4+ hours is a long time to wait for the transfer train going to Salt Lake City Utah Plus looking at the station depot pictures, all they have to sit on are long hard wooden benches Not Comfortable!! Also, is it worth getting another bedroom or roomette from Sacramento to Utah, especially if we are to be arriving at 3:00 AM? We want to go round trip Do you know if Amtrack accepts AARP cards? Are there ever any discounts for the Bedroom? How far (months) in advance can tickets be purchased & is there a lower price for doing so? What are your suggestions? Thanks!

This spring 2021 Amtrak had the BOGO roomette sale starting April 6 through April 16 on 15 different routes I booked on the California Zephyr for my wife and me for a July 2021 trip to Emeryville/San Francisco The rate was $1,800 for 2, round trip from Chicago We thought it was a good deal to help us cross off a bucket list item

Here is a useful tip If you happen to buy tickets at a high price when there is no sale- don’t panic You can keep checking your trip itinerary on Amtrak to see if it has been discounted For example, I purchased tickets for $1,637 by phone, I decided to check online the next day They were selling for $1,337, so I called and easily exchanged my tickets for the lower price I kept check back once a week and saw the lower prices and exchanged t my tickets each time for the lower price I got them lowered to $1,111 just by checking and all without a buy-one get-one sale The Amtrak agents were very accommodating Make sure they are going to email you a new receipt and ticket, it can take up to 4 hours later to receive it An agent told me that it takes time for the new schedule to route through the system

I have three questions that are off the subject We have a bedroom booked This is our first time to travel on the train If we leave our laptops and tablets in our room when we go to the observatory car, are they safe from theft or do we need to take "valuables" with us whenever we leave our room like you suggest if traveling in coach How do you check bags? We did that BOGO I think in 2019, NOL-MEM I heard the sale on the radio I could Not get it on the website, nor calling Amtrak I had to go to the NOL station to get the agent to book us BOGO roomette We had a nice weekend escape!

I agree with the comment that the Amtrak website is confusing and difficult to navigate, but it is run by a quasi-government company, so it is what it is I think it would be useful to explain to the viewers that Amtrak prices are itemized by passenger and service level For example: a single person could book a roomette and will pay the price of coach ticket and the roomette price An additional passenger can ride in the roomette if they pay one additional coach fare (you do have to book them together, as far as I know) All the fares are floating up and down based on date, time and demand All very confusing unfortunately
