James, your Spanish is great! I wish I would speak Icelandic (in 17 years living) as well as you do speak Spanish brI made the mistake of not trying to speak Icelandic with my (now) husband, and that was my perdiciónbrI never studied English, as we learned French in school (but I was a brick as a student), and when I was 18, I wanted to leave the country, so I searched the lyrics of the music I liked, and bought a huge Collins English-Spanish dictionary, and that's the way I started learning English Left to France, and forced everyone to speak English to me (yeah, was a tough thing to do in France), but going around with my huge Collins, I learned some more English Now, even though my grammar could improve a lot, I even dream in EnglishbrAs a child, I would not have imagined how far I got, with my life, and speaking languages, but now I do speak Spanish, Catalan, French, Italian, English, and 1/2 Icelandic 🤪 Anyway, I think you both are great speaking languages that are not your mother-tongues brbrKærar kveðjur frá Íslandi! ☺

As a Spanish professor in the US, I prefer that my students use Word Reference for translation Each word can translate different ways, depending on usage Word Reference explains those nuances

Scott Hullinger
For native English speakers, Spanish is relatively easybrThis is also true of French, Italian, and PortuguesebrThey're "easy" because they're based on Latin brMuch of English is also based somewhat on Latin, bralthough it's also based on Greek and GermanbrEnglish is, after all, categorized linguistically as a "Germanic" language

Kai Peterson
I don't know what kind of learner I am when it comes to Spanish I seem to have no whatsoever memory for Spanish words or grammar It took me 6 months to learn conversational Italian but the 20 plus years I am trying to retain Spanish did not propell me further than hello and goodbye Frustrating, really

Wow! Southport! I’m from Liverpool (The Wirral, actually) and had many summer visits to the beach at Southport, perhaps the longest walk to the sea when the tide’s out anywhere in the world! Many people there have a Scouse (Liverpool) accent, so I understand how daughter might sound like doctor!

This video is from 2020, so a bit of a late comment But I am returning to Spain for vacation for the first time in almost a decade Your videos have been great James, I too try to read “easy” books in Spanish Dan Brown and Harry Potters were fun page-turners Originally I bought paperbacks But one SUPER helpful thing was to buy the Kindle version instead The Kindle has a built-in Spanish-English dictionary, so you can literally just click words you don’t recognize, and you immediately have the translation Plus, you can highlight the word and at the end of the book see a list of all the words you highlighted, to help ensure you remember them This has really been a profound tool for me

I speak 4 languages, and I have never faced a problem with them; On the other hand, I have been studying Spanish for 5 years now with embarrassingly little siccess ,it is hands down the most difficult language in the world The only thing that keeps me going is how nice people in Spain when they see you trying to speak their language, they are very patient and they don't laugh at you when you say something disastrously wrong

Hi nice video, the only thing I would like to point out is that different learning styles are a myth There is no academic evidence for the existence of learning styles I don't know much about learning languages, but imagine learning the geography of countries through auditory learning, which is absurd But different things appeal to different people, so do what you like best! It's more about persistence I thinkbrSource: Pashler, H, McDaniel, M, Rohrer, D, & Bjork, R (2008) Learning Styles: Concepts and Evidence Psychological Science in the Public Interest, 9(3), 105–119 doiorg/101111/j1539-6053200901038x

How about this for embarrassing stories… years ago, before I live here, but was here on a trial period with a friend, my Spanish was horrible but better than hers… we walked in a bar, and with confidence, I ordered “dos coños por favor” instead of cañas 😨🤭 The bartenders loved it! 😂 True story

I know a couple (English man and Polish lady) who met in Spain and both learned Spanish, but the man never corrected her English and after 20 years together, her English is like that of a beginner and is what you might call (very) broken English I find this quite shocking and I do agree that couples should correct each other, but not being harsh and in a nice way :)

Hola chicos, I´d like to know why James rolls his "R"s like an American? Kiwis don´t talk like that Also Carvalho is pronounced like Carvallo in Spanish, it´s Gallego y Portugues, which are basically the same language I like the videos, you are both jovial and obviously very much in love! Yo soy de Yorkshire, Inglaterra pero he vivido en Mula, Murcia 16 años y hablo Español muy bien, pero los Murcianos hablan muy raro, no pronuncian las consonantes! Keep making the videos, Phil(Felipe)

Cuando no vives en un ámbito anglosajón y en tu trabajo no te exigen hablarlo, resulta complicado mantener al menos un nivel conversacional decente Lo de echarme novia anglosajona no lo acabo de ver ☺️ Tampoco tengo intención de mudarme de país Todo se queda en momentos muy puntuales cuando viajo por placer Pero para ello con lo que he conseguido mantener me es bastante Buen vídeo

Your Spanish is very good and even your accent is hardly noticed Lo sé porque hablo también castellano I think it is a very European thing that when you are learning a new language In my case it was Dutch and my ex girlfriend made me repeat a thousand times a word I sounded a little German because I learned it before Well it can be confusing when languages are very similar Like also Spanish and Portuguese

I've been living in Madrid for 8 moths in 1986 (Right after Chernobyl accident) I started to learn more and more, but I emigrated to Canada and had to learn English When I visited Madrid with my wife in 2013, I found that Madrid changed a lot Now, after 34 years in Canada I'm coming back to Poland, and planning to learn Spanish again From Poland will be much easier to visit Spain often I have to admit, that when I watch your interesting videos, I keep my eye mostly on Yolanda She keeps me smiling all the time You are very nice couple

Paul Dobson
James, has your English changed since you learned Spanish? I notice you pronounce your r's in words that an Australian (for instance) wouldn't I've never twigged that New Zealand English is a rhotic accent, unlike Australian English which definitely isn't Here, unless we concentrate, there'd be no difference between estar and está In Australia, unless the r starts a word or a syllable, it only serves to change the vowel sound, but we have 20 diphthongsSpanish has 5 - the straight vowel sounds
Comment from : Paul Dobson

Paul Dobson
Have you guys ever seen the movie Vivir Es Facil Con Los Ojos Cerrados, set in about 1967 Javier Cámara is an English teacher in Madrid (or was it La Mancha?) who teaches English by reference to Beatles songs He hears that John Lennon is starring in a movie in AlmeríaHow I Won The War, and is determined to go down and meet him In the Franco era of course, but that doesn't dominate the film Only on a few occasions does it dominate Of course, the movie title is the Spanish for words in the song Strawberry Fields Forever It struck me when you said you connected over Beatles music
