My trade gets me around - I design and build custom furniture in Los Angeles but 5 years ago began taking on more custom carpentry/built-in work I travel with a pretty full kit of tools and often end up living at the location in my 4x4 Asro van - I have friends all over the country so I'm always being invited to stay all over - ALso fortunate that people I've known for decades do well enough to hire me out, as well Many overlanders/vanlifers also take seasonal work, work in campgrounds, grounds keepers, etc When there's a will, there's a way Comment from : Michael Zicopoulos |

Great video What do you do for work now that your back home from your journey? Comment from : Black_Widow_Overland |
|
I have to imagine that saving up the money for the trip and budgeting it just so is part of the adventure It’s likely more satisfying to know that you made this happen with your own hard work as opposed to just getting taken care of financially with some company’s money even if you were lucky enough to get sponsored That being said I wouldn’t mind driving a free 2021 Defender with an unlimited gas card across the Gobi desert for a few months for saying a few nice things into the camera abut Land Rover Comment from : Zachary Otto |

Very interested in the publishing angle Comment from : Terry Gandy |

Once again, great info But you're repeating yourself on this topic Of the "5 ways to EARN MONEY on the road" mentioned here, it's been about 5 years now that you have mentioned, a number of times, saving money from one's own income before hitting the road is the most common among other travelers, most predictable, and most reliable The only nuance in this video is, "[by relying on one's own income/savings, you can enjoy your trip and not have to worry about trying to make money during the trip]" That addition, even a greater reason to hit the road after saving sufficient to hit the roadnot before or during Thanks, again, for sharing, being consistent, and reassuring Much appreciated Comment from : TheKnittedBrow |

I'm familiar with one successful model that's proven profitable for many years and could be adapted: An at-sea instructional service for aspiring sailors who want to learn, in depth, the skill sets needed for international voyaging but also have a bit of an adventure while doing so See eg mahinacom If the overlander planned to travel in a series of interesting areas and could periodically accommodate a guest, this could be adapted But it presumes legitimate competence is being offered, as word of mouth is a key marketing ingredient And like the other viable ideas Dan mentioned, it takes time to build a reputation and requires careful organization around the logistics Comment from : Jack Tyler |

How about working a temp job like the old Route 66 series Comment from : JayTee |

Well, one thing you overlooked is, if you have a successful brand/youtube channel like yours and others, you can do pretty good via Patreon and other donations not to mention small incomes from youtube advertising and setting up a amazon account and selling your products its not much but every penny counts Comment from : Wesley McGonagle |

Marketing: If a tire company sponsors your trip and they are also the tire you use, mention that when talking about how rarely you get flats When you come across someone whose stranded due to bad tires this might be a good time to talk about some tires that might have been a better idea You don't have to beat us over the head but it's OK, to talk them up a bit as you stated up front that it was sponsored Comment from : Kevin Rose |
|
How about Patreon ? Or Youtube ? Can you talk about these in future videos ? Comment from : Bilal Haloui |

Actual WFH jobs do exist, they arent all scams But the entry level ones are NOT going to be okay with you travelling around all the time, and theyre going to be double not ok with you working from outside the country It makes their taxes problematic and can run them afoul of labor laws in a lot of countries You might be able to skirt this for awhile using VPN's and the like, but make no mistake about it if they catch you there will be repercussions brHeck most of them will make you prove to them that youre on a wired connection, they dont want you dialing in from a public wifi or a cellular connectionbrIf you have a desirable skill that can make you some money on fiver or some other contract app, that may be a good solution, but its been my experience that its hard to get your $$ per hour up above min wage on those brbrIf youre travelling in your home country, like if youre an american travelling around the US you can operate a small business on the road I did pretty good for awhile doing professional outdoor cleaning, all you need is a power washer & some squeegees If youre travelling internationally, many (most) countries dont want you competing with the locals and will have laws against this & so it wont be an optionbrI've also known people who supported themselves by vendoring at events, music festivals and the like You can also often get a temporary job working crowd control or whatnot at these events brIf youre young & able-bodied you can also find work at seasonal harvests like the sugarbeet harvest up in the dakotas Comment from : nottiification |

Another way is to sell some of your photos on Shutterstock or other images - they cannot be brand related or reveal any brand That could work in conjunction with writing for magazines / web sitesbrbrAlso, you could reach some brands you use, and send them over product photos and if they are good enough, you could ask for something in exchange Comment from : 4x4 Camping Bulgaria |

Great Video again brFor the charity rally (Dust and Diesel) that I regularly take part in, it is relatively easy to get sponsors Some participants manage to have their costs partially or completely paid in this way But that's only a short trip of around 3-4 weeks And of course the sponsors want something in return in the form of a donation receipt or pictures with their company box (usually on a T-shirt) from the orphanage in Mauritania, which is supported by the rallybrbrFor my other trips to Africa, however, I see little chance of getting money But I'll probably try writing articles in the future Maybe that works at least a little Comment from : The Journey Ahead |

These are some awesome tips! My side hustle has been offer up for the last three years and I sell almost every of my items locally I still gross 4 figures every month by going to estate sales around me and flipping stuff without even shipping I enjoy your side hustle passion and think it would be smart to get on a podcast that I’ve been working on DM me on IG @flipmandan Comment from : Flip Man Dan |

I really like this video Others on this topic are "follow this (easy)steps to get pay to travel" This is realistic, well argumented, thorough It is hard to see how writing was a problem for you, as this video is so well written (but I get it, it was a problem some time ago) Comment from : goskascience |

ah you forgot patreon accounts etc, but I don't know how far these go to support budgets while on the road I suppose these help spend less rather than actually make money Comment from : tom abbs |
