I am a Master student CS From my experience, about 60 CS students chose the wrong major What they really wanted to study is Computer Engineering, in which they study how to code, how to build a website and so on, which is not the focal point of CS Computer science is the study of computation, automation, and information, and coding is just accidentally the way we communicate with the computer to finish those tasks

I'm currently in year 10 and I'm still learning python, I picked computer scienece for my GSCE's and I want to become a software engineer, but I don't get how full stack, web development etc works and I feel like I won't be able to keep up if I get a job because there will be more experienced coders there

When you first graduate, you will regret not having immediately marketable skills 10 years down the road, those skills are obsolete, and you will wish you had studied fundamentals Software comes in low level, medium level and high-level implementations Assembly language, C++, Python The higher level of abstraction, the more you can get done The lower value it is, because it is accessible to anyone So, do you want to have it easy or be valuable? Can you solve physics problems back to first principles or just follow a formula from Google? Domain (application) knowledge is vastly underappreciated in the software community Programming with ChatGPT won't be a high-end job It's a tough choice Somebody who actually understood Fast Fourier Transforms had to write those libraries that others merely include and call Guess which is more valuable?

What I wish I knew before taking my CS degree is that I should have never chose bootcamps over a CS degree Wasted 2 years of my life and $60k in 3 different bootcamp tuition All those wasted resources should have gone straight into a degree

school teaches you the basics most of your learning will be on the job and on your free time its important to invest time outside of work and school to get better There just isnt enough time at work and school to learn because you have to get work done Youtube, google, books plus practice outside of work will separate you from the rest

This is true of all tech careers This is why College/University is such a waste of time and money I studied Computer Information Systems and all I learned was theory and concepts but nothing about the hands on work When I graduated and went out to the work force, I was in for a rude awakening I literally knew NOTHING about the actual work I might as well just have been a recent high school graduate and no one wouldn't known the difference College/University is now just for indoctrination of ideologies and not actually preparing students for the real world

if you don't mind going back to school (preferably a community college) you can get your AS in computer programming to better build upon you CS degree, they will go through and give you all the fundamentals and show you the tools and industry standards A lot of post grads will go back and grab their AS because they feel as though their degree didn't properly prepare them for the real world well enough
