I want to breed fish because I have a niche interest in animal color genetics and aquarium fish are one of the only species left on earth that we don’t understand the color genetics on I want to make discoveries both about their genes and their behaviors to better the hobby and decrease inbreeding I think if people understood better how to target breed for coloration or body type without inbreeding or linebreeding, we could increase the health and lifespan of our beloved aquatic pets Comment from : BrindleMoon |

Actually get small cichlids from stores keep them for about a year or two when they get real big and mature I take them to my local aquarium and they give me lots of money or store credit so $11 little cichlid turns into a $60 one within a year or two it's weird but that's how it goes around here Comment from : M m |
|
My local pet store is phasing out all critters We're a small town and the nearest place to get even just guppies is an hour drive away I could use some extra cash so I'm going to set up a couple of tanks for guppies and platies and maybe one for swords I used to work at said pet store so I have a good idea of what sells around here I have a seasonal career and even if I only bring in a hundred bucks a month in the winter, it'll help a ton! Hot tip if you are just trying to supplement the hobby A lot of fish stores will offer store credit in exchange for fish So if you're just going to be spending your money at the fish store anyway you can usually get better value this way Comment from : Violet M |

I like in the UK and I have mollies that are breeding and I'm 14 and I have no way of selling them because I'm so young and here in the UK it's different do u know anything that can help me Comment from : Dolly |
|
Thanks for your really informative video! What about selling not-so-rare fish at auctions/swaps? Like Black Mollies, Koi Angles, Bronze and albino Corydoras? Less common, but not terribly rare, such as Platinum Angels, Polar Blue Parrot Convict hybrids, Brislenose plecos (albino father, clown mother)? Is it worth it?? I'm breeding fish specifically for my local fish specialty store, especially lately, I know it's only a small part, but to keep them going through these uncertain times, I give them fish, I get some store credit, win win if I may say so myself Comment from : human 1792 |

Hi, if I were to home breed some fish, normally what are the difference of price ( interns of percentage ) between retail price and the price local aquarium willing to buy from me ? Understand that it is different in each country, but just a rough estimation Comment from : ty k |

Great video! A lot of really good info here Regarding shipping fish, there are a lot of very good tutorials out there for how to do it effectively Personally I've had very few DOAs, and even when it does happen, buyers are generally very forgiving All my online selling experience is with Aquabid, where I've found people to be great to work with and super understanding The best part is almost every sold auction has ended up adding several more fish, which is a nice bonus!brbrI would say the nicest part about selling online is people know exactly what they want and they're willing to pay for it Local swaps and auctions are still a great way to get your fish out there too! Comment from : Mike Entner |
|
When I was breeding I sold to my local PetSmart they gave me$3-$5 an angelfish $10 for 20 common goldfish $1 a guppy $2 a Mollie plati or swordtail $350 for any catfish I made a good bit of money for awhile until the parents started dying off and haven't been able to find any others that want to pair up and reproduce Comment from : HotRodder47 |
|
Okay, so what I heard was, "Hey Whip, go ahead come to my house and I'll sell you a couple of my electric blue acara for the same price I would sell them to my local fish store That way you can breed them and make a million dollars" Did I hear that right? 😜 Comment from : Steel Reign |

I've recently gotten into breeding a few different species in my fish/shrimp room This was very helpful Thank you Comment from : Bolezy |

I am the second type of person you described - hobbyist looking to make this hobby a little less expensive I have both bought and sold fish/shrimp from/to strangers, mainly through craigslist The experience is mostly pleasant Sometimes we even share some tips about keeping fish during the transaction I never invite people to my home It is usually in a public parking lot It works for me because I don't do this very often, perhaps once or twice per month I mainly sell livebearers and cherry shrimps Comment from : Bob Han |
|
I love kuhli loaches (Pangio semicincta and Pangio kuhlii) I'd like to get breeding them consistently figured out, so less wild harvesting would be necessary Comment from : peepslostsheep |

I'm moving into a house soon and plan to build up my fish room and breed for profit to support or at least partially support my hobby I would love to make a career of it and even open a fish store, but I don't think that's in the cards for me I breed fish because I enjoy it and I concentrate on fish that aren't very common in my area to spread them around to other local hobbyists The key to breeding and selling at local swaps and auctions is knowing what fish your local area are most interested in and keep That means going to and getting to know as many people as possible through fish club meetings and events Our club normally has a yearly all species show, but this year that got nixed down to just an auction due to Covid Comment from : David Bowman |

I didn't make the decision to breed fish, the fish decided themselves! First, my Platys bred, and now some of the "used to be fry" are pregnant! Second, I ordered some Red German Peacock Cichlids, from all places on ebay, and they bred! This was my first time having egg layers / mouth brooders breed I had learned to strip the pregnant Cichlid, which resulted in 38 fry! I will have to get rid of some of the Cichlids when they get bigger because I don't believe that 30 + Cichlids will fit in a 55 gallon tank! So I will probably just trade with the pet store because I believe that this will be an ongoing thing from now on because I know that the Cichlids that I am going to keep will breed again, and I'm not hurting on cash Comment from : gethighonlife11 |

|
I'm very reluctant to try breeding fish There are no local fish stores or fish clubs in my area, and it's likely I'd end up with more fish than I can care for and not even be able to give them away for free Comment from : Matthew Zito |

My Clown Killifish have started laying eggs Whenever they start giving me fry I will take them to my Local Fish Store along with Pogostemon Stellatus Octopus This will hopefully start bring those fish into the local area because so far they are mostly imported, and not available in the immediate area Comment from : Alexander Lamb |

About 25 years to late I used to breed peacocks way back when and brought a number of wild caughts and fry into San Antonio Everyone wants these hybrids nowadays Yuck! The Tangyanika market here is almost non/existent here now and seems like the cichlids clubs are hiding I stay pretty much with basic tropical anymore for pure enjoyment! Love both of your channels Comment from : Kirk Scobey |
