Only an American could take our Nations pride in achievements and relegate it down to a comic strip Honestly I understand you’re trying to learn, expand your boarders to see outside the US and that’s fantastic However, choose your words bud We actually do take pride in our currency and the images aren’t for comedic value The images are significant to our country Comment from : V S |

Got a fun fact that she forgot to tell you, and this fact is not known by a lot of Canadians When you have a $100 bill which is not that old, when you smell the maple leaf on it, it smells maple That's a true fact that not a lot of Canadians know so there it is The maple leaf smell is just with new or recent $100 bill Comment from : Krakenchuck |

If you smell our bills they staight up smell like maple syrup The banks say they didn't do that on purpose but there is a slight sweet maple smell to them and many people would die on that hill, it's just true, I have no idea how or why Seriously smell your Canadian money and tell me differently! 😂 Comment from : Chelsea Clerke |
Also every year we release coins, usually quarters, with not only new designs on them commemorating something, they will often have duplicate bcoloured/b versions! I collect the coloured ones The first time we did that, there was an altercation at the US border, where a border guard thought one of our coins had a spy device built into them! That's because the loonies and toonies have a circular striped impression on them that make a maple leaf hologram But the one that confused the border guard was commemorating Remembrance Day poppies, and had a completely new way of embedding colour onto a coin We also did this with pink ribbon (breast cancer) design One of our quarters even has glow in the dark Northern Lights! We are always coming up with new money ideas! Comment from : Karsten Johansson |
One more thing: On all the bills with the maple leaf with the circular "object" on them, that also is a special anti-counterfeit piece: If you look through it toward a bright light, or shine a laser through it, you will see the money denomination That's one that most people don't realize because it otherwise just looks like a whitish disk There are other features on it as well, including a pattern that sort of looks like random yellowish dots that are hard to see They form the southern cross, randomly laid out in different directions, and your computer's scanner will refuse to scan them There is a lot packed into these bills Comment from : Karsten Johansson |
I can't believe she called the caribou a moose Even if she said reindeer, that's fine Comment from : icouldjustscream |
I shop in the states bc I live in a border city and I find when I use US cash I find it difficult to tell the difference between the denominations They all look the same I have to really look twice to make sure I’m using a $10 and not a $20 or $50 I prefer the colours that are easy to tell which is which The feel of the money is so different too I mean no disrespect but the US money just feels dirty Whereas the Canadian money feels cleaner, it could be due to the type of material used or it could just be that the US money has been handled more bc of the larger population idk Comment from : Kat w |
She is wrong though Tyler All stores in Canada will accept cash at the stores I never pay Debit at the store I pay in cash because I like paying for the stuff I buy in the store in cash because I want to get coins as change Comment from : Stephen Veldhoen |
The Nickel has a Beaver, the Dime has the Bluenose Schooner our famous racing boat, The Quarter has the Caribou on it not moose, the Loonie 1 dollar coin which has the loon on it, our 2 dollar coin also known as the twoonie has the polar bear on it Comment from : Stephen Veldhoen |
Virtually indestructible as well Can't rip or tear it, it can get absolutely soaked with no problem, but you can't crumple them and it's really hard to do origami I watched a YT video on making $ bill butterflies and thought I would make some to put on my daughters Bday cake The video used US bills and no way the CDN bills would fold properly Comment from : Just killing time before it kills me :) |
It was costing the canadian mint 15 cents to make 1 cent Comment from : Kilo Hotel |

The ship on the dime is the Bluenose - its a famous part of Canadian History and the bears on the toonie ( 2 dollor coin) are polar bears The toonie was first introduced in the 90s I believe and they had to fix how they produced them as some had the gold part pop out of the coin Comment from : Delia the Mystic |
I havent used physical money in a decade Comment from : MÆZ |
As a 30 yo BC residentI have never seen that design for the $10 bill Is that just eastern Canada? Ours had a redesign a few years back, so that may be what she’s referring to But I’ve never seen the one she showed Comment from : Scarlet_Phoenix |

I can tell you as a Canadian, we kind of take for granted the colours When I've visited the states I have to really look at the bills or accidently give the wrong amt Comment from : christina Scallion |
The animal on the quarter is clearly a caribou, NOT a moose Caribou and reindeer are the same animal (Caribou in Canada, Reindeer in Scandinavia/Russia and parts of New Jersey) A moose has a much more rounded nose as you mentioned and much more scoop like horns as opposed to the narrow nose and branch like horns of the Caribou or as you may call it Rudolph Note, Canadian caribou are forbidden from lighting their noses out of season to help fight climate change Comment from : Phred |
you can literally launder Canadian money You can wipe down or dry them with a cloth with no damage Comment from : judybijou66 |

On other side of coins you'll see the queen, more often than not, unless special occasion coin Our $ bills so often compared to monopoly money too, heard that a few thousand times Comment from : TSAM333 |
It's not brail on the bills For each bill from smallest to largest, 5, 10, 20, 50 and 100 will have different sets of 2x3 A 5$ bill will have 1 set of dots, 10$ will have 2 sets, 20$ will have 3 sets, 50$ will have 4 sets and the 100$ is a little different, it will have 2 sets of 2x3 dots, the 1st set will be in the normal position but the 2nd set of dots is in the middle of the bill Basically there like brail so blind people can feel what bill it is Comment from : Ironbeard |
I need to send you a bag of ketchup chips Comment from : Trish Lehecka |
Most people don't like changes, so if you just wait for them to like the one and two dollar coins, they probably won't catch on These coins caught on because the Canadian government just stopped printing one and two dollar bills 😉Also, both the coins and the polymer bills are much more durable than paper, saving the mint a lot of printing cost Comment from : Daniel Dickson |
Iirc, it was us Aussies who invented this new type of currency with the first note being the $5 note in 1995 I live in Canada these days and Canadian money seems not to include several of the features ours has inc see-through windows, hidden watermarks only visible when held up to the light, and raised text Comment from : Kalani Vernon |
I had been to Mexico a few years before our polymer bills were made and they had polymer bills so tourists getting wet didn't ruin the money They are tougher but can still tear or break under harsh treatment She didn't show the other coin side with the head of Queen Elizabeth on it Comment from : Neal MacDonald |

The ship on the dime is the schooner "Bluenose", a fishing ship that won a number of races Comment from : Shawn Elliott |
The woman doing that video is not as educated as she seems If you were travelling to Toronto or Canada like TO is the most important place in the world! LOL The ship is called the Blue Nose which is a historic schooner used for fishing and racing in the 1920s and 30s The quarter does not have a moose on it It's a caribou You can find special collections of each coin that has different animals on it too I grew up with Cdn 1 and 2 dollar bills which is a treasure to have now! The $1 bill was green and the $2 bill was red We used to have 500 and 1000 dollar bills too When Canadians come to the US and have your money, we really have to be careful to know exactly how much you have and you pay with the right ones as it's all the same colour! Comment from : Tracey Kinsman |
Canadian cash is also waterproof! Comment from : Serena C |
caribou is on the 25 cent piece Dollar coins replaced the bill years ago Same with the 2 dollar bill replaced by the toonie We also have a northern lights loonie that glows in the dark The new 2 dollar coin has a black outer ring signifying the death of the queen Comment from : Jeff Still Jeff |
In Canada we are also used to are money being named loony toons do to there nicknames 🇨🇦 Comment from : Eclipsewolf |
we got rid of the penny copper pennies cost $186 each to make no longer any point to them 1$ is a buck or a loonie 2$ is a toonie as for special coins, there are so many different ones, that they aren't special anymore Coins last 50 years (longer even) smaller denomination bills, have a very short life span Moving to plastic was a good idea almost impossible to counterfeit and they last twice as long as paper Comment from : tricky meerkat |
A moose?! All Canadians are face-slapping right now They ended the one and two dollar bills, so coins took over, obviously If the US had done the same, the Susy B would be there Comment from : Chewiebacka |
what you missed is that there are no 1 and 2 dollar bills in canada coins only that's why it " worked" in canada they just withdrew all the one and two dollar billsbrhere in the us people would go apeshit if that happened same if we removed pennies and prices would round up from 3 cents to 5 people would go apeshit about it as if it's some govt conspiracy or world order domination thingwe have way too many yahoos Comment from : ron black |
A couple of other nifty things that she forgot to mention (besides the fact that it’s a caribou and not a moose, and the significance of the bluenose ship):brbrThe coins all have the queen’s portrait on the back, but her age changes depending on the year Older coins have her looking quite young, vs more recent coins where she looks olderbrbrSee that little transparent maple leaf up in the corner? If you shine a laser light through it, it’ll project the money amount on the wall Just another way to combat counterfeitingbrbrAnd finally, there’s an urban legend that the $100 bills smell faintly of maple, scratch-n-sniff style… I know it’s probably not true… but I also swear that they do!😆 Comment from : Artoveli |
American coins have a tendency to enter circulation in Canadian retail stores They get used at face value Comment from : Andy Cooper |
She should be ashamed of herself!! My God she didn't even know the animal on the quarterwow!!! Its a caribouugh SMH Comment from : ivan Maclean |
