Hi, do you still answer questions in videos? I would be interested to hear a summary of research on so-called superfoods, there is such a hype around them, but also a lot of conflicting information I was wondering if they are just another chicken laying golden eggs in terms of profit to companies selling them, but have no significant benefits Would appreciate your help :) Comment from : O L |

This information found by Christine Kerns is incredibly important in readjusting the popular opinion that fats and cholesterol are the only source of congestive heart failure and other hear diseases To prove explicit correspondence between sugar companies and the researchers that studied the effect of sugars and fats on the heart show as HUGE conflict of interest Whether the results of these studies were true or not, this still raises ethical concerns over the data in those studies Since money is the only thing that keeps a company in business, and “proving” no relationship between sugar and negative health effects would affect the consumers’ opinion of sugary foods and how much money they spend on them, there is good reason to believe that sugar companies would be biased in their reporting of data that involves any of these criteria Now, a deontologist would likely argue that this potential misinterpretation of data and the failure to disclose this conflict of interest constitutes lying Lying is wrong, so that makes this situation unethical A utilitarian would likely say that in doing this, the researchers and sugar companies potentially exposed the general population to a contributing factor in heart disease, which is not good for the general population, so this act was unethical An egalitarian would argue that this constituted an inequality of both money and potentially health that did not help the disadvantaged and is therefore unethical A proponent of common morality would argue that this discourse goes against consumer autonomy and potentially beneficence and cause maleficence The fact that all of these various moral theories would all lead to the conclusion that this behavior between the sugar companies and researchers is unethical leaves little room for doubt that this behavior is unethical Comment from : Phillip Markey |

This video does an excellent job of underscoring the importance of ethical behavior in medical research and the conflicts of interest that can arise when corporations fund research Research has historically been heavily regulated, due in a large part to the likely hood of the conflict of interests that can arise from the nature of its funding The importance of ethical behavior is even more important in research because of the large influence that it can have on treatment in the greater population In this instance the Sugar Research Foundation used it influence to dictate the outcome of research that could affect the profits of the whole sugar industry and by manipulating its findings to their benefit and to meet predetermined outcomes This manipulation has had fifty year effect on the health of the world’s population, not only on heart disease but also diabetes It seems that at the time there were two schools of thought on the possible reasons for heart disease that were being studied If the research had not been manipulated and silenced by the sugar industry it is possible that two of the leading causes of death in the United States could be nearly eliminated by now This show why researchers need for autonomy from influence from their sponsors is imperative But the particular researchers in this case are also to blame, it is apparent that they acted unethically when they authored this research with a predetermined outcome defined by the sponsors of the study It was also unethical for them to have accepted money, although that can be seen as coercion by the Sugar Research Foundation Comment from : SA Dean |

What? Large profit driven corporations manipulating the public against their own good to maximize their profit at the expense of the health and well being of everyone?brbrClearly anti-capitalist propaganda, no need to regulated companies They'll never use the health and/or lives of people as expendable fodder to generate obscene profitsbrbr/sbrbrThis makes me so angry Physically angry They knew their product was unhealthy and the only way they knew how to react was to be scared about their profits and find a way to hide the truth from the public This is almost as bad as oil companies spending decades and untold sums of money flooding the discourse about climate change with information they know is false because they were holding on to their on research that said so the whole time they lied This isn't quite so bad as putting money before the species, but it's putting money before the public's health Comment from : StrongButAwkward |
|
So sad and infuriating But let's be honest, if we had managed to single out one or several factors leading to heart disease, would the people even make an effort to cut back? Health organizations have been promoting exercise and balanced diets for decades yet a significant proportion of the population do not even come close to the recommendations We need more research looking into how to increase healthy practices especially the most basic ones Comment from : c m |

I wish I realised earlier how bad sugar is I have a crazy hippie aunt and she says sugar is poison I won't go that far, but to live a more healthy lifestyle one of the first things you should look at it the amount of hidden sugars you consume And it's hard once your pallet en body are used to it to whine yourself of it Really hard Comment from : Sassy Owl |

It's hard to imagine how many lives were cut short and resources misalocated because of that greedy industry and unscrupulous scientists We can only hope that current peer review practices make things like that rare now, but it would be naive to think it doesn't ever happen I wonder why government organizations that investigate these things to make, for example, the Dietary Guidelines just swallowed it and didn't take a look at the basic research themselves Comment from : Dissident |
|
I think this video underscores the inaccessibility of scientific research for the average person When the research is too long and complicated for the average person to understand, we are forced to put our faith in proxies - ie experts This faith allows opportunistic experts to get away with fabricating results And if/when such fabrications are discovered, the public's faith in the whole system is seriously damagedbrbrI think this is exactly why you have people going around claiming that vaccines cause autism Comment from : abrahamneggs |
|
Great video, this is so interesting Do you have another video where you talk more about the effects of sugar? Thanks! Comment from : colojuli |
