My ancestor owned the land Cloth Fair was built on next to St Bart's Hospital It was a field for a Priory originally owned by Augustine Monks until Henry VIII's (also a distant ancestor of mine) dissolution of the Monasteries and where later, washer women for St Bart's Hospital hung clothes out to dry, also where there was a Bartholomew's Fair annually my ancestor Henry Rich, now being allowed to build houses there, built "the oldest house in London" on the land between 1597 and 1614
