@IngenerateIngenue
Sixty years on from this we no longer use the terms ‘handicapped’ or ‘disabled’ when referring to neurodiverse challenges; teachers are also very limited in the physical contact they are permitted and for the safety and integrity of the children/vulnerable adults, this is essential and progressive We need more Mr Gibson’s in mainstream schools, his work is astounding with positive results

My son is normal physically and he deals well with his peers and do sports and talk normal but I feel that he has slow educational development and now he will be in his middle school I plan that if he can’t make it in a normal school I will put him in a special class for his own good Now ,teen agers with slow learning disabilities has the chance to work and support their life unlike before Now they have many chances to make a livelihood I’m worried as a mother but not worried I will support him until he attain he’s ability to stand alone and I will also pray for his own welfare because I can’t do anything without God

Growing up in the 70's, this video has made me reassess myself that I had undiagnosed ADHD I was John I tried to do everything right and perfect in class and when I couldn't, I suffered with anxiety and behavior issues My outbursts of behavior were so over the top, I knew I had gone too far but couldn't control it I was alone at primary and intermediate school and had 2 friends at High School Post High School I was excluded from a lot of things that I believed I really was no good, so why even try! I was extremely active and an all rounder in sports Sports actually saved me from what I dread to believe that I could have lived on the wrong side of the law Sport taught me discipline and patience believe it or not I loved it and excelled at it I was told I'd never amount to anything and would end up in prison, that's how bad my behavior was When I got to High School I was too involved in sport to get into mischief The positivity from it and my attitude to something I loved and was good at had an effect on my academics where I topped my class 3 years in a row! From bottom of the class post High School to an academic achiever and top all rounder athelete I always thought I was dyslexic where it came to math and was told by one of my math tutors that I am above average in math especially mental math and that I must have had a lousey math teacher who didn't understand me He also said that I was "lazy" to try better and I totally agree there because I hate math lol In Enlish and literature I am an A+, way above average, it helped that I also enjoyed it So wow what an excellent video It brought back some painful memories of my past however, does not defy who I am today

@marlapineda9049
As a kid in the late 1990s and the early 2000s my parents, especially my mom didn’t understand why I was different from the other kids and after my parents baptized me as a Catholic because they were devout Catholics and we happened to come from El Salvador, they sent me to a Catholic school because they believed that a Catholic school had good emphasis on education compared to a regular school, though they didn’t know nor understood the educational system My former paediatrician referred me to a Catholic school that was far from where I lived in my old neighbourhood and I was referred to a special education class where I was literally the only non White kid there until I was in grade 6 or 7 I think I might have been overlooked when I grew up and by the time I was 12 or 13, I began to feel lonely and unhappy with being there as I wasn’t able to explain the fact that I felt too old to be there and I was improving No one understood or were reluctant to understand at the time that I had a learning disability with math and I still do to this day, but what was never acknowledged was that for many years I had an intellectual disability which is pretty mild While at the same time I denied having PDD NOS and my teachers held me back from integrating, for fear of losing their jobs If I knew that an alternative school existed, I would have benefited from it, but my years as a former student at a Catholic school haunts me and continued to do so to this day, it completely fucked my life up

The amount of help wee Blake gets here looks impressive My daughter has moderate dyslexia, and trying to get her help was exhausting, this was in Glasgow in the 2010's BTW She had speech therapy too, around 4 or 5 Didn't seem to hold her back thou, she got an A in higher English, and managed to get a place in university
Comment from : @yakacm

@theimposingview
The American public school system was not made for non-neurotypical people We spend the formative years of our life failing, and are often undiagnosed We’re shamed as lazy or labeled as a, “bad kid” ADHD is completely misunderstood, the people that ACTUALLY have it, do suffer everyday There is no cure, only “treatment” of medication that comes with MAJOR side effects or, CBT but the struggle will be lifelong

These teachers were so gentle and empathetic, I certainly wasn't expecting it to be like this, considering this documentary is quite old, but I'm glad! I'm just left wondering why every instrument and note in the background music is so distorted and out of tune It gives this doc such an eerie feeling 😭😭

@adriannajeant
My father was in school in the 60's He made it through to high school but due to probably perceived "bad" behavior, lack of help/ actual understanding, and probably getting beat due to his learning challenges, he got kicked out He never finished his GED either My dad is so smart too, especially with math and computers I think this messed with his self-perception and has caused him to develop a lot of bad habits in his 60's

My son has ASD, ADD, sensory perception disorder and learning difficulties, he was excluded from his special needs school at the age of 14 when his head teacher said at his age he should be able to cope with his difficulties (he needed to wear ear defenders and the school wouldn’t allow this) I told the head my son copes very well with his difficulties but he will always have them, he isn’t suddenly cured of his disabilities when he turns 14 I was left no choice but to homeschool my son, he says mums school is the best The education system is still failing so many children

I have Autism and ADHD and there is something called Center Program/Special Ed which is for people with learning disabilities I was in there from Preschool in 2010 - 7th grade in 2021 I was diagnosed with Autism and ADHD when I was born which caused me to be a bad student and people disliked me for it I would be on the floor all the time, throwing tantrums, and even whining about everything like time out or getting on red on those class color charts I have been always below grade reading level by multiple years since the 6th grade reading at 2nd grade reading level I was actually surprised that I never got held back in Elementary even with all the struggles I have Now I am going into Sophmore year in August and improved everything and also a General Ed person As the video from the start, the teacher asked " 3 sheets of paper, scissors, and paste" The girl could not remember while I remembered it clearly

I liked those metal desks I told my parents how much I would like to have one So, mom called the school and found out there was no way they could get one for me So, dad knew a guy who did wood work and he made me a desk sort of like it out of wood It opened up like those did with hinged tops But the seat was flat and hard, with no back

This was in my recommended, and I clicked on it warily just to see how bad it was I had assumed it would be funny until it was infuriating and upsetting, because disabled children have been treated so poorly in the past — just as they are still treated to this day — but this was surprisingly nice to see They did a pretty good job for this

As a 40some that only discovered she's adhd after her 30s it is so sad that children are being dismissed as "unruly", or "naughty and mischievous", instead of assessed and helped for learning and cognitive differences, because it is too much effort to provide care for them once "labeled"
Comment from : @nelliemusignac

@StephWantsHealth
This was an individual school system in California This was not the norm for most schools in the 60's They usually tracked the (what they called the slow kids) into a lower track for the rest of the child's school life Meaning they didn't expect much from them And didn't test them either

I've grown so accustomed to being shown documentaries, PSAs, commercials from the 50s and 60s being wildly out of touch and aged poorly, I was caught off guard when this ended up being decently genuine and accurate What do you mean they figured this out half a century ago and yet the vast majority still don't get it?
