🤯Wow!!! Mr Sowell this explains so much! So true from my experience being a black raised in the southern low district area, even down to watching my siblings play Wiss (not sure how it’s spelled) It was a struggle for me to get out but thanks be to God I truly overcame the spirit of entanglement I always wanted to do more and be better I WISHED I learned this earlier, but I’m glad I know nowmuch work has to be done to educate my family

I don't agree with all of Sowell's conclusions or evidence For instance, he's too credulous in accepting 18th- and 19th-century quotes that stereotype Southerners and Northerners to the detriment of the former Imagine if some future historian wanted to do a hit job against any group today (Mexicans, gays, Catholic priests, etc) by stringing together derogatory things some people say about them It wouldn't be hard for this future historian to cherry-pick quotes for a misleading and biased impression And Sowell doesn't consider alternative hypotheses like maybe the reason Southern dairy farmers produced less butter and cheese than Northern dairy farmers is that in the South before air-conditioning and refrigeration, dairy products were hard to keep fresh This pattern exists in Europe too: northern Europeans use more butter for bread and cooking than southern Europeans, who use more oilsbrbrSowell is on firmer if less colorful ground when he skips the anecdotes and period stereotypes and instead provides data to support his conclusionsbrbrIn any case, Sowell offers a fascinating and thought-provoking take on one strain of contemporary Black culture

It is a smith family tradition to eat blackeyed peas every new years day Black eyed peas was one of the only crops that general Sherman didn't burn because he mistakenly believed that they were not edible for people So that is all my family had to eat after Sherman came through He torched the livestock, and all of the other crops along with the family mansion and all other buildings on the property

My grandma and our family came to Cork Town in 1935 when she was 12 She talked about how white southerners were so hated that even northern blacks and whites we're united in their hatred of them The fact that my great grandfather was a terrible alcoholic prone to violence combined with the fact that nobody wanted to hire southerners made life very difficult for my grandma, aunts and uncles Mr sowell is a very astute western philosopher of our era

having some seriously disconcerted sense of this ethnic disparity in the 1990s, my wife & I made a trip to Senegal & Gambia, only to find the folks there look very much like folks in this country, but behaved entirely different - other than their trying to emulate the urban lifestyles portrayed in ebony & jet, etc they were very well-mannered, industrious, kind, and very respectful, this in contrast to the images this country's media portrays of life on the continent the author's premise/explanation is extremely palatable given the experiences encountered with euro-americans from some of the areas mentioned, and further by following up on some of the author's references amazing! this characteristic of these peoples, but explains why it's not readily found or taught in any history in this country this is rather an impolite behavioral correlation!

I grew up in Appalachia in the 70’s-80’s; my mother stressed proper table etiquette, especially when it comes to eating properly with utensils When I first went to elementary school in Appalachia, and I was eating lunch, holding my fork properly The other children around me all were shoveling their food in their mouths like it was going out of style One boy at the end of the table yells to me, “you eat like a girl” My reading comprehension was above other boys in my class and I was not really thought too fondly of by the other children They sometimes said I acted like a, “yankee” brbrThe stigma of being educated, and acting with manners was sometimes frowned upon by other kids and a lot of times adults as well, growing up in the south
