In 1979 a new music genre emerged, bigger than punk, hotter than dino rock, much more able to crossover to pop than disco or R&B - dorky guy playing a cheap keyboard with sorta cute, kinda vapid girl singer in front New wave was a marketing term This was "quirk rock" and it broke big and ushered in the DIY 80s with the proto-MTV attitude - everyone from Missing Person to Berlin - yes, there were variations, Lipps Inc had a great singer and was more disco-y, M had a guy singer with girls backing him up, Bruce Wooley, Gary Numan and Boomtown Rats were disguised as bands - but it was all Quirk Rock and it is with us in some way to this very day
