One thing that sucks is that one of my classes doesn't just require an online textbook, but also a single use code in order to access any of the homework that we have to do for the class The book that has this code is damn near 50 dollars, and when I asked him for help with this he just told me that "The ebook is required for the course and I'm afraid it would be very difficult to pass without those assignments For most college classes the book is a separate expense along with registering for the class"brbrWhy do I have to pay a separate expense for the class when I'm already paying for the class? I'm supposed to be paying for YOU to teach me, not the book Either include the book in the price for the class and give the students the access codes to access the materials or don't use the ebook at all It should not be my responsibility to pay a third part for my education when I'm already paying the college for my education Comment from : Kerotaro |
2nd hand Textbooks or rentals are prevented by adding restricted codes? to printed material? did i just come out of a cave or does it not make any sense at all? Comment from : Fnorx |

Something that’s ridiculous is that in high school and lower levels of education, textbooks have always been free in my schools In most of these classes I have never used these textbooks so I asked my teacher one day, “why do we have to get textbooks if we never use them?” She said it’s because it’s the law It’s ridiculous that hundreds of unused textbooks are free for lower levels of students but can’t be made free to college students who need to use them Comment from : swofozu |

Don’t even get me started on how some of these companies get over Sometimes they call it a new edition but all they changed was the cover art so they can hike up the price Professors would tell us to find upperclassmen who hadn’t sold their books yet and try to buy those if we couldn’t afford the new book asking price Comment from : emayaych |
It really doesn’t matter if I care about the class or not…I still don’t have the $150 to spend on that many college text books You instantly, in many cases, go from a world where all your books are given to you (elementary, middle, and high school) to a world that expects you to have a significant amount of money existing out of nowhere (college and grad school) without any preparation It’s a debt making machine Comment from : emayaych |
I don't care about the textbooks but why won't the schools pay in bulk for the textbooks for all the students We're already paying for and taking out massive student loans for classes and tuition anyway Comment from : ThePowerBunny |

Bundling wasn't a reaction to used books Used books have been around for a while Unnecessary new editions and bundling are what some publishers do to try to get a larger share of the market The latest attempt to get rid of used books is the inclusive access model This is when you get charged an added fee with your tuition for a given class The digital version of the book gets delivered to you through the campus/school web portal There's a federal law that says you can't resell any non-tangible product And most inclusive access programs are exclusively digital So this kills the used book market However, the prices of digital books in inclusive access models are quite cheap Also, the inclusive access models only give you access to the book for a limited time So you are actually renting the book, not buying it So does this solve the problem? Not really The used book market will eventually dwindle, removing competition Prices will come back up when the used market starts to die Comment from : tyler durden |

how much do you people in USA pay in average per book? I've personally never had to pay more than 50 per one, well i'm saying have, actually i wanted it for several reasons, it was not a requirement for my course and even if it were there's a lot of pdf's sharing in my college any way i'm purchasing a new book and lets say it costs like 30, and I wanted other, but I wasn't able to find it in spanish (my native language) so I looked for in in english, like 40, but it would arrive late, so I reaserched prices in ebooks, oh boy couldn't they be so greedy? i'm not lying when i'm telling you that the 30 book costed three times as an ebook than physical book as a completely new book and the 40 book was't even available as an ebook, are you kidding me!? what a scam, by the way, the 30 book was a thermodynamics one, and I ain't paying 90 bucks for that not even considering that I wanted it in the first place Comment from : Nit |

Please modify the title to "Why College Textbooks Are So Expensive 'in America' ?"brThis is the most dysfunctional aspect of free markets, of which I am an embarrassed votary brbrAmerican academic publishers are doing, what is called price gouging and the government is looking away I don't expect the man with the straw hair to do anything about it But someone should have brought this to the notice of Obama Comment from : SUBIR NAG |
