Which tee box are we talking about 80? I am able to break 80 on White tee but only once on Blue tee Just a few yards difference but it’d throw off my club distance control and management Comment from : Phi Huynh |
Zero wind helps!! Comment from : Cruce Entertainment |
LMAO! I’m the same way! Last hole to break 80 & triple bogey Giving up if I know I’m not breaking 80 I’ve been there! 😂😂😂 Comment from : NoClickBait |

Don't duff your pitch approach to the 4th hole I did that last Sunday and scored 80 Comment from : Andrew Carter |
Seriously dude the only thing critical about golf is that you don't add strokes when you have the possibility to save them just as you don't waste time when you have the possibility to use it efficiently I think it's been several months since I last even looked at one of your videos much less watched it all the way through I'll be longer until the next time Comment from : touristguy87 |
also given your focus on score you're not considering the pros and cons of making simple changes like aiming slightly left or right or clubbing up or down Hitting a draw or a fade, hitting low or high, leaning into or back away from the ball, opening or closing the stance, shifting your position forwards or backwards on the ball, opening or closing the clubface, teeing up or down, swinging shallow or steep, opening the swing plane or closing it, adding or reducing dynamic loftall of the little variables that you can introduce on any one shot that can change the outcome dramatically You're just thinking about your total score on the hole You are wasting the opportunity to even play the gamebrbrThere's a reason they call it a Monet and not "an 80", dude Comment from : touristguy87 |
03:18 easy enough to do without lying to yourself about breaking 80 which is a bad trendbrJust say "you've got to get up and down" You're screaming into the wind that your only real concern here is breaking 80 Comment from : touristguy87 |
Great video Matt! I'm a low to mid 80's golfer and have a goal to become a consistent high 70's player This helped thank you Comment from : John Montagne |

I like the hole by hole method and choosing the holes I would like to par or birdie! Great advice Mr SG! Comment from : Troy M Smith |
I’m back to trying to break 90 Before Covid I was shooting in the 80’s, but I haven’t been able to practice or play much since the beginning of the pandemic My score right now is between 95-105 depending on how well I’m striking the ball on a particular day Comment from : Serenity in silence |
Great mental lesson! Comment from : David Parker |
I love your videos MSG You talk so much sense! Thank you Comment from : Henry James Walker |
The mental game can make you "mental" Good advice 👍 Comment from : Rip The Ripper |
6:37 I would rather have an 80-100 yarder than a chip I have a hell of a time controlling a small chip It either barely makes it to the green, or rolls all the across to the other side and back off the green lol Comment from : Ivan Krushensky |
as someone who just recently started golfing again seriously i feel taking a deep breath and going hole by hole like he said is the best way to achieve the score your trying to hit great video keep it up! Comment from : VBE Raen |
What course is this??? Comment from : John Adams |
We got a little chicken on the bone!!!!! Lol!!! Comment from : Erik Lund |
That was a great tip, especially since I’m trying to break 80 right now My focus is hole by hole 🕳 thank you 🙏 Comment from : Biagio Cozza |
Well done MSG! Pressure meditation is the universal law ;) In a "pressure" situation, your mind which is a brilliant creative magician will find a way to complete the task brgreat video I sincerely can't wait to try to implement your strageies Comment from : Clifton Regis |
Great video Don't let the course beat you If you hit your 3 wood 200-250 yards, that's a great tee shot for most courses I don't even carry a driver most rounds Comment from : John Johnson |
Another great program my friend Be well Comment from : K Terlau |
Matt - You have, by a huge margin, the best golf channel on YouTube Great content! Love ya! Comment from : Frank Ballatore |
I really like the adivce to pick 2 birdy holes and 6 par holes Also I think I am guilty of giving up when I know I have messed up several holes already I think I will take on board your suggestion to put pressure on the holes like having to get up and down to break 80, Thanks for this Comment from : jonathan charles |
For me it was mental I'd tell my self boggie is a good score I shot 80 3 times last year but what killed me even time where 2 back to back short par 3 with ob left and right I don't have a problem with long ones but thous 2 just kill me every time lol Comment from : shane mcinnerny |
Can we get a video on how to break 120? I'm dog shot at golf 🤣 Comment from : Philip Wilcoxen |
My main thought while focusing on breaking 80 was to play every 3 holes at 1 over or better If you do that, you shoot 78 or better Obviously it’s easier said than done but if you look at your 18 hole rounds as 6 separate rounds of 3 holes, you will learn to focus on the present and overall minimize your mistakes Comment from : Rey Rosas Golf |
jus got into golf last year been watching all types of videos but you my friend, are easy to understand how to fix my game can't wait for the season to open out here and try it all out Comment from : Tommy Spitz |
I'm not quite sure who you are trying to teach 80-90 of golfers can't hit that blind shot you just hit from 235 I watch you, Rick Shield and Mark Crossfield all the time and none of you ever teach the benefits of laying up to an easy number on Par 5's The average amateur golfer who is looking for scoring help can't reach a 500 yard par five in two The freaking course is giving you three shots to get there! Use that to your advantage and practice hitting your PW 100 yards Comment from : Charles Crawford |
The problem is that people play the wrong tees They play by age I think tee boxes should be set by handicap A 25 Handicap should not be playing blue tees at 6700 yards He needs to break 80 from 5,800 yards He'd enjoy the game more Comment from : Charles Crawford |
It’s far to easy to get sucked into golf product reviews on YT Thank you for creating usable on course content! Comment from : Aaron Colton |
Great way to approach each round…sometimes I overwhelm my game with how I played on the front nine…and it snowballs Comment from : KATHY WEIGEL HI-LO PHOTO &VIDEO |

As always A very informative and practical video Each week watching the professionals on tv makes me wonder how some of them make the choices they make Sometimes they try to be too perfect and just end up blowing the comfortable lead they had and end up losing the tournament Do you think it is their ego that handicaps them? Or is it the adrenaline that just takes over and causes them to take unnecessary chances that don't work out very well sometimes? Did you see John Rahm mess up on that 10 inch putt, tapping his putt only one inch? That had to be a mental mistake Unbelievable how that could happen though And to hear how many great players miss the cut line from week to week also Thanks for your intriguing videos and insightful information I haven't played in years but want to get started again and so enjoy your instructional help Comment from : Tony |
hit the ball close to the hole and putt well that's it Comment from : videom |

Playing golf competitively helps a bunch with getting used to pressure too I remember the first time I joined a group and the sweat that ran down my back when I needed to make a put or good shot for the team It’s brutal but it is great at making you better and making golf more fun Comment from : Mike Dorsey |
Pretending is not the same as actual Comment from : J L |

Love the idea of not focusing on the big end goal but goals on a more hole by hole basis Remove that unneeded pressure Smart Comment from : Paul Stippich |
Thankyou MrShortGame for the awesome tip on how to break 80 for I have been stuck here for awhile, I really needed some guidance in regards to the mental side and this vid gave me a starting place, Thank you so much! Happy Golfing! Comment from : Nathaniel Landeros |
Great video Matt! You're really helping me I started in October with a 38 handicap As of December 4th my handicap is now 16 I couldn't break 100 Now I've broke 90 twice with most of my scoring in the low 90's I'm going to start trying the strategy you mentioned in this video I know it won't be easy for me since I've only birdied two holes since October 1st Golf sure is getting more fun! Thanks again! Comment from : Nathan Pahman |
Really like these ideas I’m a 15hcp and have a goal to break 80 Never had the mindset of honing in on some holes to ‘birdie’ I am going to employ this idea and trust I can make more birdies in the process In essence it should take the pressure off and bad holes too 👌 Comment from : Ian Blackburn |
Golf is Mental game, to break into 70's yes course management and mentally thing positive, don't get 1 bad hole get into your head, you still can recover, last round I played last 4 holes triple bogey/par/birdie/birdie(chip in) I play off 8 Last round i scored 79 Comment from : Freddy Wong |
Nice mental aspect for tackling the game Matt! To hit, or break 90 for the first time, I always mentally gave myself one extra shot to get on the green If you're decent at putting and can usually 2-putt, it puts you right there in the low 90's and high 80's mark with a couple pars Thanks for a great vid! Comment from : HillbillyJedi88 |
I broke 80 for the first time a year and a half ago Now I’ve broken 80 twenty times or so I’ve had a career best 2 over par and I’ve shot under par on two 9’s but I’m yet to break par on a full 18, that’s my next goal! Comment from : BadBoiFilms |
great tips for beginners I got better by playing with good players and putting pressure on myself every shot, kinda like you said When you are critical of yourself, you know exactly how to fix your swing Helps to have a like minded friend to watch or film you Comment from : Mike Elliott |
Love the video Keep em coming! Comment from : Zile Rehman |
Great advice, inspiring I stopped golfing in 2016, many reasons I have been missing golf Looking for inspiration to get back out there I could not break 74 I remember one round where I was 6 under going to the 17th hole Can you guess what happened? I ended up shooting a 74 Comment from : noonster55 |

Hi mr Short game I’ve watched a few of your videos and my game has improved enormously brI’m a 66 years old pensioner and started playing golf about 5 years ago, to be honest I’ve checked out so many videos for tips but I’m still hitting the ball everywhere brSince watching a few of your videos I’ve been practicing and my game has improved enormously brBut the reason why I feel compelled to send a comment on this video is, brI played golf on Monday and had 111 shots brI watched this video, planned the game like you recommend and knocked of 15 shots brUnbelievable brSo thanks and keep up the good work because golf is fun John from Sweden 🇸🇪 Comment from : John Wattis |

What course is that? Comment from : R R |
Thanks for your great advice, I would love to get my game more consistent If I can continue to follow and remind myself of your tips I know that I can do it At 66 years old and my adjusting is still in progress with the slower swings finding the use of woods, hybrids much more common Comment from : Nathan Frisby |
The aspect of creating a mental aspect of every shot counting and creating pressure is such good advice for someone relatively new trying to better their game like myself!! It's so easy to just want to relax and hit good shots when it actually doesn't count, especially on the rangebut every time I put that mindset of "this s**t counts" into my practice, my next round is always more enjoyable Love the content bro!! Comment from : skate4lifejm4eva |
you are good at this Comment from : Justin Dubler |
How do I circle 2 holes to make birdie if I’ve never made a birdie before Ahhh? Comment from : C Dix |

The bottom of your 4 iron is the size of my shoe Comment from : mrdcato |
Tried this today, my target was 45 on the back 9 I ended up with 4 holes meeting my target, one better, and 4 worse So 49, average is 52 It really takes away the habit of trying to play the whole course at once, and pressuring oneself to take miracle shots in hopes of fixing past lousy holes I look at the game completely differently with just this 10 minute video Comment from : Joseph OReilly |
Show My son (22yrs old) this video yesterday he used your method of circling holes to birdie and par todaybrHe shot 73 has never shot less the 79 usually low 80’s Comment from : Dean Marcantonio |
My course hardly has rough The forest is thick Basically my course is like playing fairways with water on both sides Comment from : Sw3 W |
Can you do a video on lag putting Comment from : Chris Neider |
Makes perfect sense I have a couple of acres so I can spend a lot of time chipping and it has become the strongest part of my game But I often do not take advantage of it and factor it into my strategy on some holes nearly as much as I should I need to correct that so I can break 80 next year Some good information brother Comment from : Alan Edwards |
Much better approach than the play 3 holes at a time (2 pars, 1 bogey) Comment from : G2niverse |
GOLD Comment from : NXT LVL GLF Instruction |
You really messed me up with the 10 handicap 😆 brbrbrbrbrI'm a 10 handicap Comment from : mrpurge97 |
