I'd disagree with this Zito, Mulder and Hudson were all products of the system, no? Same with Chavez and Tejada to a degree, I believe Like Tejada didn't really become huge until that 2002 season, from what I remember Which plays into the moneyball philosophy As for the poatseason, I'm not sure if it's in the movie but in the book, again if I remember correctly, Beane's goal was getting to the playoffs, not necessarily the world series, because the playoffs are a crapshoot Which is technically true If their philosophy hurt them, it wouldn't have been copied by every other team in the league lol

It was a success to think that they won 103 games that year and won the AL west was a big accomplishment for a team that had nothing going for them after they loss Giambi and Damien

They talk about Tejada and Chavvy in the book They also talk about how they had the best bull pen, and while they highlight Bradford, it’s because he fits into the metaphor Michael Lewis is trying to convey, same with Hatteberg and Jeremy Brown You didn’t read the book buddy lol

They do mention Tim Hudson in the film When Brad Pitt is passing the players playing cards in the locker room pre game he says, “Huddy Mix it up” and pats him on the shoulder and tells the other guys to stop distracting him before the game And yes the movie doesn’t focus on reliever of the year Koch, MVP Tejada, or even Zito, but that’s because the focus of the film was on the undervalued players that the team used like Bradford and Hatteberg

The reality is at the time they just had a solid core of young players, under club control Hudson molder, Zito Chavez, Tejada, etc They just were able to use the money ball logic to fill the gaps, but having that young core of controllable players is far more important than money, ball logic

I don’t think that is the correct take It’s my take but moneyball just was there as a way to compete against big market teams as a smaller market because Oakland was never in a place as a franchise to be a big market (aside from the 70s,80s) That’s why they used things like platooning and evaluating OBP to utilize their options to the fullest extent So, by saying that moneyball didn’t work because of playoffs, you are basically being dismissing the fact that the team of Oakland’s caliber (as in the overall market of the team) was never supposed to be in contention with the big market clubs in the first place
