Awesome video! I think about my old man who has hunted with the same rifle his whole life and killed a lot of elk There are way better guns out there now but they can’t replace the comfortability and confidence he has in his rifle Comment from : Justin Gibson |
And Fred Bear kills yet another animal at ultra close range in heaven while wearing a brown pair of canvas pants a a neutral colored plad flannel button up shirt He looks over and there’s Larry Benoit chuckling on the next cloud while hunting in a heavy wet snow storm soaked to the bone but still warm as can be in his solid green wool pants with his signature green and black check jacket Camo and modern materials are way more for the hunter not the game being hunted!!! Comment from : Pathfinder |
I tend to have a gear list that would have been similar to one of the 1950s through 70s Keeping it light, enjoy the challenge ( skill) of leaving the training wheels at home Man up and do it the way grandpa did I agree with your attitude on this I'm not trying to say I use gear of the 50s I'll use the modern if it's better but as we all know some of the older stuff is better quality built Comment from : Kevin Barton |
I don't know, my grand father never had the fancy camo or cover scents He killed big bulls and whitetail, how did he do it with out all the fancies? Comment from : Robin Workman |
Right on Just like golfing New clubs every year to fix your bad swing Comment from : Corporal Punish |

best video yet Boldly honest I'm sure you hurt some feelers out there The only thing I think you didn't say but implied is all about someone's pride Thank you Comment from : Cavemannn |

My grandfather born out in Western Oregon in 1913 Gave up hunting in the 1980s (Too much GOVERNMENT CRAP/OVER REACH)brbrAll he ever hunted with was a 300 SAVAGE in 99 savage, it was made in about 1920 and old gray sweatshirt and a gray pair of tin pants He was also a logger that man with that setup killed hundreds of deer, possibly thousands No fancy gear And he had plenty of cash to buy what he wanted or needed Comment from : Jack Dundon |
Where can I buy that licorice that will improve my hunting performance? Just kidding I’m enjoying bingeing on all your videos Thanks Comment from : Fintan Maguire |
I agree with everything you said Cliff I buy the best I can buy and generally look for clearances on gear I’m interested in Camofire App being one of them I also look at how many times I will use this product? Binoculars for example I would not buy 200000 pair to hunt out west one or two times Age being the factor If I was a young man I would take the leap as far as I could go Razor or Swarovski and such! I would look for products such as the trackingbrPole coupler you purchased It just makes since Keeps poles together and doubles down as rifle rest I buy solid pants where I can interchange tops from clothing of different patterns that I fill has an advantage to inclement weather or just the plain old unexpected I love FirstLite Cifer and Sitka subalpine for example That’s if you want to remain color coordinated which I do for whatever reason! Lol Shop smart I think you pretty much said and don’t fix what ain’t broken unless there are distinct advantages to the new and improved Thks Good video and good advise! Keeping it real! God bless Comment from : Michael Kilpatrick |
The need for the better longer reaching harder hitting bullet! There is always something new but tried and true should have been where I stayed Would have saved so much lol Comment from : Terry Hemmes |
In addition to hunters I respect, I’ve been talking to non hunters who are hard core mountain hikers to research my new back country hunt gear I still use gear that has served me well for twenty years and have a hard time giving up proven stuff For me working within my budget has been key and difficult, but it’s coming together Thanks Cliff, learning a bunch from you! Comment from : Russ Clarke |
Well said Cliff I've definitely falling into that over the years The problem is everything is driven by money and a company that wants to keep going needs to constantly put out the "latest and greatest" to try and grab the market Take the time to scout more, dial in your rifle/bow more, test and use the clothing and equipment you have is way more beneficial in the long runbrThanksbrNate Comment from : Journeyman 71 |
Well said, brother! Comment from : Drew Merryman |

Coming down with throat cancer caused me to lose over one hundred pounds Problem is or was, my camo hunting clothes are way too big! I’ve decided to spend the money for what works That is what I see other successful hunters using Yes, I beat the cancer and am planning big time hunting trips with my boys, maybe even Africa! I’m hoping I don’t intimidate them because I’m retired with plenty of money while they are raising families Good advise Cliff, thanks for your effort Comment from : D Butler |
The basics of any hunt is getting out and going I remember as a kid at a local country store with my Dad, he was talking with a buddy and I was the typical kid wanting something new and shiny, I was 8 years old I guess he was into the conversation and when I asked for some money he gave me a five dollar bill I was so excited because I had been eyeing this wallet one of many on a old flimsy piece of cardboard above the register counter with the usual combs, precut fishing line with attached cork and hook, handkerchiefs and other products you would expect in a old southern store This wallet had my complete attention because I was into westerns as everyone my age during that time, and this leather prison made wallet had a horse carved on the front of it So I took that five dollar bill and bought that thing quicker than my wife would buy another pair of shoes today spending that five dollars down to three cents after the purchase I ran to my Dad with the biggest smile to show him, he said it was nice and asked how much it was I replied with the total price and without a smile or hesitation he ask me…now what you gonna put in it? Lesson learned!! Comment from : Charlie |
I can walk out the back door and have 2 deer stare at me for 3 mins 30 yards away, but go in the woods with camo and gear u won't see a deer for 2 days 🤔 Comment from : Heath Marcum |
Honestly instead of shopping the big hunting clothes brands just shop on rei clearance or on steep and cheap for neutral colors Same exact materials from trusted mountaineering/outdoor brands but significantly cheaper because they're clearance Plus they're more versatile, I dont want to buy something I'm only going to use 2 weeks out of the year tops Comment from : curtis jensen |
Just subscribed This level of honesty is rare and much appreciated You're saying the things we all already know deep down but don't want to admit Rock on man and God Bless! Happy Hunting! Comment from : Gearhead Outdoors |

I’ve been on a self imposed shoestring budget for years now When it came to things like clothing it really hasn’t mattered much, because we’re not back country hunting, usually hunting in what I call “mechanized infantry” Drive to a good glassing spot, glass, hike to a better spot, glass, hike back to the vehicle, and dismount to shoot an animal we stumble across on the way to the next glassing spot Heated towable hunting lodges (trailers) help dry clothing for the next day’s hunt This is made possible by the terrain of Nevada, where the valleys and most mountains are vehicle accessible I’m always careful to have good wool socks, which tends to compensate for mediocre boots I’ve had to work out some kinks in the moisture management area (zipping a vest into my outer shell versus the jacket was a bombshell breakthrough) I’ve also never had a deer or Antelope ask if I was wearing Sitka as I walked up to quarter it I don’t know if the elk I helped pack out cared if I was wearing a Pendleton wool shirt, but I was sure happy to have it for that cold / sweaty experience +1 for style preference, which only seems to last the first day as my cowboy hats get hot humping hills, so that falls back to my silk wild rag and a ball cap or Irish flat cap The budget approach bit me in a few places (optics) and my first rifle This also allowed me to land in the market of some pretty workable gear in the mid level price range at a time when the offspring is grown and the height of my earning potential The draw odds in NV limit opportunity, but going with friends helps learn an area in the off years I guess I’m in it for the opportunity to be outdoors, eat game meat versus commercial beef, and be with family and friends while I’m doing it Got into the game late in life, but I’m always day dreaming about the next time I get to go Comment from : William Olliges |
I feel you Cliff! Great messageI tend to steer clear of guys that always have top-of-the-line fresh gear that looks like it just came out of the wash or buys a new bow every yearwalk up to me with some well-used, worn-down gear and we can talk! Comment from : REEL Estate Jeremy |
I am a gear whore admittedly Glad I stumbled across your channel amigo being a hunter first and dualsporter second myself Having a military background, having decent gear, figuring out what works/doesn’t, prepping things, going through it, etc is part of the enjoyment and process for me regardless of the hobby I try to buy once, and only upgrade if there’s a reason to Comment from : Lance Poteet |
Most fishing lures are designed to catch fishermen, not fish! Comment from : Mike Jones |
Great video Things to think about I would spend my money on the things that would keep me safe and comfortable if something went south like weather or injury Being able to take care of basic human needs is way more important than a 450000 rifle:) After all now days budget rifles that come with a free scope shoot sub moa I just proved that last week Your safety is number one And a successful hunt is number 2! Can’t have number 2 without number 1 Comment from : Matthew Nelson |
Hunt in the Deep South Got a buddy who we mess with We tell him it looks like cabelas puked on him always has to have the latest and greatest My shit is old and faded and still kill more than him all of do I tell people don’t skimp on optics and boots by once Firearms I also tell people you don’t need a two thousand dollar rifle to kill game buy something that suits the hunting you do area range ext but also don’t buy the cheapest firearm you will hate and spend money twice Comment from : Brett Eumont |
Great video! Personally, what you're talking about is one of the reasons I like to hunt with trad archery gearit's already out dated by it's nature So, " upgrading" to the newest tech just isn't really a thing Plus, if I get skunked I can at least salve my ego with the fact that it was already really difficult to start off with ;-) I also like the Fred Bear quote " The best camouflage pattern is called sit down and be quiet! Your grandpa hunted deer in a red plaid coatthink about that for a second"brbrThanks for putting out the content You and Clay Hayes are the top of the youtube heap Comment from : Jon Brown |
I have to admit that last part hits homebrI look at day packs and such,I'm just like that new pack doesn't do anything my current doesn't already do Comment from : Mountain Poo |
Some of my best huntsbrRiflebrAmmobrKnifebrParacordbrNothing eles Comment from : Mountain Poo |

Get stuff that works and stick with it till it wears out If it ain’t broke don’t fix it I scour the internet when I do need something and most of my stuff I eventually find 50 off just need to spend some time looking Comment from : Nick B |
I have always ran buy the buy once cry once I shot competitively and I still run the belt I bought 6 years ago I was taught hunting with the old man and we wore redn or orange flannel My hunting is the same way buy once cry once I dont need to buy new gear every year Hunting gear is just like buying a pc as soon as you get home it's out dated Comment from : Blair Mcfaull |
Knowledge is ultralight Comment from : Raymond May |
Totally agree! I've been say'n this for last 5 years You heard here first- think about it, they're selling "the experience through the possession" Joe B Comment from : Joe B |
So, I guess it's cool if I keep my thirty-thirty with aperture sights and keep on dressing like Elmer Fudd when I'm hunting,?brbrNot that I really care I like looking as though I leaped out of the pages of a 1950 issue of Sports Afield Comment from : Jerrold Shelton |
I just subscribed because of this video I'm planning on starting to hunt once I move to Colorado next year and wow this video made me feel calm for the future Comment from : Wasa B! |

I need bigger camper,,,,too much gear,,,,lots is needed,,but rarely usedYes,,,I'm sucker for latest, greatest,,,its dumb Comment from : Benton Cushing |
Couldn’t agree more on skill set being more important I killed my biggest bull at 3yds with not a shred of camo on, and my bald head glistening in the morning sun Reason being is because I showed up late to elk camp and wanted to get a early morning hunt in before unpacking all my gear, it sure taught me a valuable lesson Comment from : Warren |
Gregory backpacks and LL Bean wool pants and sweaters I never worried about buying new backpacks for hunting because I have a couple of Gregory packs that I already own and are comfortable Wool pants, well they are inexpensive, warm, quiet, and surprisingly water resistant Comment from : Noah Brainard |
Yea, I jumped off the gear merry go round Marketing tells you that this stuff is made with high tec scientific material that magically wicks moisture away etc etc blah blah blah Its just nylon and polyester and spandex in different combos and different camo I discovered this on an elk hunt when i bought into the underarmour nonsense i sweated more and the stuff made me hot when it was hot and cold when it was cold Worse stuff i ever bought Sitka had a whole Youtube series of the science of what deer sees and promoted the “open country” camo But now its two more camos, of subalpine and forest What happened? Did the deer see differently? And as far as “influencers” go, one year they are praising this piece of equipment as the best and the next year they pimp themselves out for another brand that gives them free stuff Comment from : Ou812 |
My Orvis pants from Costco: $20, water repellent, stretch appropriately, comfortable Perfect Comment from : David Edwards |
AMEN Comment from : Woody W |
Cliff, thank you for sharing your experience and the wisdom that you have earned from that experience Please let me know where you bought your stick attach meant from the ones you use for a rifle rest, I have been looking all over the web and the Internet Thank you I appreciate it Comment from : Tony Dee |
Great philosophy on the gear I have always been an outdoor enthusiast Hunter, backpacker, mountaineer A tent/ hammock/ rolled up in a tarp on the ground kind of camper As I'm getting a little more experienced, I've found the ground is a little harder and colder than it was forty years ago when I was 20 There is not much gear that is essential to a successful hunt The native American hunters had skills rather than equipment Bow, arrows, knife, ability to build fires etc Comment from : RedHawk44 |
I started with trash over 10 years ago an it always worked for me Ive upgraded through the years because i could afford more But it doesnt make a better hunter It makes me more comfortable An with age my eyes decay so better glass isn’t necessarily a bad thing or a warmer cost etc fact is if you want to hunt do it Or dont, growing up a friend of mine always had alot of money so he just bought top of the line stuff an never harvested or shot buttons Put the time in 🤙🏻 Comment from : Daniel Nelson |
Interesting topic on buying hunting gear The only place near me to buy brand name stuff is Cabelas in Dartmouth NS I’ve been there and looked at a ton of stuff Expensive stuff, me being practical I didn’t buy what I actually went there for My hunting clothes consist of 30;year old Realtree hardwoods camo quilted bibs and jacket They keep me warm, so why buy new I’m thinking there’s tremendous markup on that sort of stuff Once again thanks for making the informative videos for everybody to watch Comment from : Barry Tree |
I've been a vegetarian for 30 years , I don't hunt lol But I think Cliff's points are applicable to other outdoor interests and hobbies and beyond Comment from : Kevin Johnson |
Great rain and hunting gear by catch and release Small business awesome customer service Be sure to use their sizing guide Comment from : Foushbag |
So true!! Comment from : Moses Miller |
Camouflage is the biggest myth ever When you hunt certain areas that require an orange vest and you throw that orange thing over your torso and you go out and harvest an Oryx or Ibex it should tell you something about camouflage Comment from : DB COOPER |
The most successful hunters I know in western states west wrangler jeans & flannel shirts-not camp of any brand! Comment from : Mikel Worthen |
Love it The problem I run into is I find something I really like, use it till it's a shambles and when I go to replace it The replacement stuff is changed and usually for the worse Comment from : Jason Erickson |
You nailed it with the keys to gear being comfort and confidence I will wear 3 or 4 different camo patterns at once on a bow hunt I do not care so much about how I look to other hunters, but how my gear performs And while I'm not an outfitter, I try not to buy anything at MSRP; patiently wait for sales, and add pieces to my gear when those sales arise Not being brand biased helps here too Comment from : David Tapia |
When I started hunting 10-12 years ago I didn’t even own my own rifle yet and I didn’t even start buying camo until couple years ago but my rifles today are some of the best with rifle scopes I mainly use leupold stsrted out with few vortex but they are subpar I always wore jeans and a t shirt in the fall during hot archery hunts I wear shorts and tank top I work on learning the animals and and trying to stay fit for my hikes watch videos of how professionals hunt and out there experience with my own and go out and learn Good comfortable hiking shoes most important besides my rifle because I have wide feet haha Comment from : rdgsupafli |
I respect your no BS vids It's a rarity in this industry Comment from : thomas chalupa |
I have a pair of Swarovski NL pure binos Yes They were stupid expensive But I'll never need to buy another pair of bino's Swarovski is the best period I've found animals that my buddies literally couldn't see with there glass But I agree with you on 90 of what your saying IMO Bino's are one of the most important pieces of gear people need to spend money on Comment from : Elitehunter303 |
The Indians used sticks & strings, used fire smoke for cover scent Think about it Comment from : ThistleDewOutdoors |
Brother so true on the gear My Dad went to the woods with his rifle, smokes and coffee and harvested plenty of game over the years brGreat video Thank you Comment from : Jason S |
Awesome information straight talk and real No disrespect, I only want to see you grow in subscribers and followers I say that to say this Please use less camera transitions brbrI almost didn’t watch the whole video BUT you had such good information I couldn’t stop watching/listening brbrGood luck in all you do Comment from : Jason S |
Cliff ur a smart dude GOOD FOR YOU LIKE UR VIDEOS Comment from : Michael Yanni |
This This should be on part of the orientation of any new hunter we get so hung up on gear that we loose sight of the actual hunting skills Accuracy, Tracking abilities and field knowledge are WAY more important than all the fancy gear I live in South Africa and my dad has hunted for many years in a pair of old blue jeans and a brown shirt with great success no funny camo clothing, no scent repellant sprays or fancy rifle scopes - Just his knowledge of the field and years of experience - that is what made him a great hunter Comment from : Danie Van Niekerk |
I have an older bow (ancient, by some people's standards) But it still works so, unless someone comes out with a bow that will bring more deer under my tree, I'm happy to keep using it Comment from : TrapDaddy65 |
I always find the material I want for a piece of gear ie gortex, puffy jacket, packable rain jacket or camo etc and buy the least expensive I can find I still wear camo that doesn't match and have elk look right through me standing out in the open as the light colored camo pants and dark or green colored top break up my pattern I made my own bugle tube out of a large wiffle ball bat There are two areas I spend top dollar on though Boots and backpacks I don't hunt out of tents anymorebut if your back or feet hurt your ass will spend less time in the woods where it counts Comment from : kodiakfisher |
Cliff yes the gear industry is always coming out with something New and always will The most important piece of Gear is Boots because if your feet hurt you will not be mobile and you use it more than any other gear don’t skimp I had a trip to Alaska Caribou on a DIY hunt I bought a rain coat in new condition with tags on on eBay $39 dollars worked great and I was rained on for 9 days Funny thing is it was Corn stalk camo pattern Caribou didn’t mind ! Most Gear is over rated !!! Buy what you can afford ! Even from the farm store Comment from : sha6mm |
I bought a lot of gear my 1st year elk hunting - MISTAKE !!!!! Look at my short clip from last September - I was calling in bulls all over Colorado in sweat pants and Nike airmax shoes & a bright blue Eddie Bauer down vest !!!!! Comment from : ThistleDewOutdoors |
Some of the best hunting clothes I've ever bought have been from Walmart on clearance!!! 4 way stretch nylon camo pants & Shirts are The same materials as the big brands - ONLY 10X cheaper !!!!! Comment from : ThistleDewOutdoors |
I stumbled upon your channel watching hunting videos I cant believe I just now found it! I love your blue collar, everyday day joe , yet professional guide approach and philosophy to hunting Good luck to you and thanks for the great info! New subscriber and looking forward to future content! Comment from : J Springer |
I worked in the hunting industry for a brief time3 years, lessons learned never make one of your passions your job it will ruin it for you Second all these gear companies want you to buy the latest gadget or gizmo and there is no real benefit to them, period zero All it is, is a BS marketing claim, it will not make you a better hunter Third all influencers who are “sponsored” are full of 💩 All they want is money and recognition by attaching them selves to a hunting brand to give them some sort of relevance in the hunting industry, most of these people are Narcissists and are manipulative 💩people I met a few great people working trade shows but alot more💩ones Not just influencers, company owners, “journalists” and celebrities as well Hunt for your self and hunt because you love it The industry kind of sucks Comment from : J G |
My favorite is guys who can't stalk worth a shit buying HECs because iT bLoCkS mY eLeCtoMagNEtic FiELd🤣 Comment from : Wilderness Medic |
The ice fishermen are the worst Some people have to buy more stuff to make it interesting I guess I'd rather just get better I try to buy as little hunting gear stuff as possible Comment from : greg mulfort |
This is how I feel about all the new tools and equipment in the flooring industry They are coming out with all these new tools to do the job better or make it easier You can’t fit all the stuff in your average work van At the end of the day the floors don’t look any better I just assume have the basics and rely on my skill and experience to get the job done right I’ll keep the money in my pocket Comment from : Emery Landry |
I started improving my clothing to get away from carhartts and flannel shirts and have made a couple changes I know about what I need to wear and what works for where I hunt Merino base layers, lightweight to midweight, wool socks, better boots(huge benefit), poly pants that don't hold water and are lighter more flexible, don't worry about camo pattern too much I hunt archery and rifle Hardest pieces of gear to get good stuff in is rain gear and a good hat Hunting in PNW it's usually raining or wet at the least And about everything I have was bought on some kind of sale and they are pieces that fit into what I desired Often I'm wearing multiple vendors gear at same time And nobody needs camo base layers, why oh why, it just makes these items more expensive Comment from : Phil Ward |
True Comment from : Chad Clayburg |
Not quite understanding the purpose of this video? Companies need to continue to come out with new gear to get people interested in buying their products Hunters need to try new gear to see what works for them Damn near every other business in the world needs to continue to keep up or they go under at some point If camo patterns are more for the hunters eye, so what? If they want it, buy it All it does is add competition, which is good for all of us Same as any product Comment from : Tikka 300 WSM |
I still believe and wear the military woodland camo IMO it’s very effective I have noticed and will start trying is to use lighter colored camo It seems to blend in better with most any terrain I watched a video of a guy stalking a buck with what we would say is good camo but he stuck out like Sasquatch in the area he was in You can add to the lighter camo for changing conditions I’m the kind of guy that I won’t change something I like and comfortable with unless someone can show me different I like your thoughts Thanks Comment from : Greg Phillips |
Excellent👍👍 Comment from : James Heasley |
My experience in a nutshell! I can work with the wind and many other factors but I can not sit still when I’m freezing The fear that I’ve found that helps me stay warm will stay with me for a long time no matter what other miracle clothing comes out on the market Comment from : Eli Wengerd |
Great video All of your points about the newest, "best" products are spot on I always say that Fred Bear killed more animales than you've ever even seen and he used tech that's 1,000s of years old (stick bows) for the majority of his life brThe one thing I disagree with is your take on optics - I have always believed that almost nobody needs to spend $1500+ on any daytime optic The "better" factor is meaningless, even to what most in our world would consider a good shooterbrWith modern technology and manufacturing processes even middle-of-the-road scopes are far better than we'll ever be, just like most rifles that are derided as "cheap"very few of the people saying that can competently test the effectiveness of the gun or the optic Comment from : Tom |

A breath of fresh air brbrI tend to think the more time people spend in the backcountry the more at odds they are with the marketing of most gear and I would say conventional knowledge from the past 100 years or so Just my experience brbrAlso I have a hard time changing things now Bought an extra backpack (same model) when I found out mine was being discontinued I do wear out gear like crazy Comment from : wcndguy |

Go into the woods literally hungry -- the most important thing to achieve success -- no quit mentality -- if you can hike up and down mountains for 9 hours-- there it is go get it Comment from : Ziruk-King |
100 correct! been saying this for years myself 10years ago there wasn’t the crap in the accessories market and it’s all down to marketing! don’t get sucked in👍 Comment from : Gary Trigg-Graynoth |

Man I glad you started this channel Comment from : Mothman 792 |

The gear industry is the worst thing that ever happened to hunting A LOT of the more traditional types of hunting are very low tech The team real tree $2000 bow gang does everything they can do to put traditional styles of hunting down Nothing gets kids interested in hunting more than a good hound or bird dog and a mess of small game Don’t be fooled by these big game $10,000 dollar bow hunting deer lease types They don’t care about the future of hunting They just care about the money Comment from : Try this |
