I think if your learning from outside Japan with an hour a day dedicated to studying you could have basic conversations within a yearbrbr If you live there and actually have time to study 3-4 hours a day and immerse yourself and try using the language daily by chatting people up 6 months at most for basic conversations brbr10 years to handwrite a university thesis in Kanji maybe

i mean, languages also don't "need" inconsistent spelling and grammar rules, and yet we speak englishbrbrLanguages are not about "needing" a feature, they're about expressing a thoughtbrthe way japanese handles sentences is a lot different from english, but if anything, I'd suggest more people learn it because of that reasonbrpushing yourself to speak a language so different really helps with aging and memory, and is also a pretty cool thing to do

If you are into linguistics, japanese is a fun language to learn I love the syllables so much, it makes pronunciations very simple I've made quite a few conlangs, and I can't help but always base them on Japanese I'd love to say it's such a simple language, but it's just as nuanced as any other language I myself can't speak it fluently, but I think anyone can with enough practice and serious dedication and commitment

I took Japanese classes for 2 years and it was very easy, for most of the part Slowly you get taught more and more stuff and you usually learn romaji before hiragana or katakana or kanji Yes I know there’s like 3/4 alphabet ranges but seriously, if your just going for a holiday in Japan, one you don’t really need to learn how to write, just read and two just learn basic Thankyou, your welcome hello and as said in the video, asking for directions if needed 😅 I’m still learning Japanese, hiragana and katakana are VERY easy but it’s kanji which is hard Also re learning and memorising things is super important and useful Personally Japanese is probably one of the easiest Asian languages to learn, but it will take time like I’m talking a few good years (probably 4-5yrs)

if you’ve got the motivation it’s easy I think like all the grammar and everything makes sense and has solid rules, you just have to forget all rhe rules of english and put the effort in I was able to hold a decent conversation in most situations after 1 year (although i did spend a lot of time on it) but I think 10 years is a long estimate if you just wanna be able to hold a conversation and don’t care about sounding completely fluent

100 Agree If you try to learn Japanese for any other reason than enjoying learning Japanese, just don'tbrYou can spend a year learning the basics of Japanese conversation and get by fairly alright in Japan, but if you want to sit down and have a conversation in Japanese without switching to English or pulling out your phone, you're gonna have to dedicate your life to it

As a person who moved to America from Japan I can confirm that English is waaaaay easier There’s three different kind of alphabets including thousands of symbols that makes up thousands of different words when you combine them It’s a pain in the ass if you ask me
