Speaking as a Master of Theology (degree), the definition of a sacrament you present here ("an outward sign of an inward grace") is, yes, simple, but it is also so watered down it is pretty much meaningless It really tells us nothing about the depth and breadth, beauty or richness of the seven great gifts of Jesus to his Church (us) Try this: A sacrament is an efficacious (or effective) sign, instituted by Christ, which not only produces grace, but participates in the reality of what it signifies The seven sacraments are the primary means which Christ established to invite us to share in his Divine life which is the purpose for which we were created and our eternal destiny Frequent reception of the sacraments, with proper disposition of the soul (ie, properly prepared and worthily received), is the means Jesus chose not only to live in him, but to save us It is the participation in the reality of what a sacrament symbolizes that differentiates it from a mere sign (or symbol) Example, a stop sign does not cause "stopness", that is, we can blow through a stop sign, if we decide to, despite what the law says about stopping at a stop sign However, the water and words of baptism are not just a sign or symbol of new life in Christ, it truly makes us a new creation in Christ, by removing the stain Original Sin, removing ALL our sin, reconciling us to the Father (by truly joining us to the mystical Body of Christ), and giving us the right and power, in Jesus Christ, to worship (in the true theological sense of that word), the Father, with the Son, in the Holy Spirit 'Nuf said
