We have that hydro power one in the UK in Wales but only as a sort of backup power option for if there's a very big power outage across the country (rare) But every winter it makes the news when our tabloids roll out the usual fear mongering 'national power outages expected' headlines but we never use it

While these "batteries" will clearly be needed if we are to move into a future free of carbon emissions, why is it that we are still only trying to rely on technology to solve societal issues? That energy distribution throughout the day on the grid is clearly something that can be somewhat flattened if societal arrangements regarding work routines and such be adjusted - not enough to render these batteries obsolete, but could certainly reduce the strain put into such systems

The general ideas presented for energy storage are great The explanations used are terrible brbrIn the California example at the beginning, the chart implies that renewables never meet demand, but says energy storage is the issue Storage is only the issue if you have times of excess yet the example shows no excess brbrIn the pumped storage example, it's shown wind and solar are 100 efficient, but that's patently false Solar and wind efficiency are both under 50

Norwegian company TechnipFMC is developing the DeepPurple system for storing excess energy from wind farms as hydrogen I was lucky enough to see the prototype in action and i dear say it looks promising!
