Thanks for checking out my video about ALG! I made it five years ago for my blog Beyond Language Learning Its mission is to make language learning much easier and much more enjoyable for everyone At the time, the video and blog didn't get much response, so I didn't make any more videos and eventually stopped blogging It's great to see this video start to get so many views after so long However, this has happened in the middle of a difficult few weeks for me I want to respond to your comments, questions, etc as much as I can, but that may take some time In the meantime, I'd be grateful if you check out my related work that I've linked to below —Kristian

You forgot, that neuroplasticity does decline and transitions into a different mode at around 25 After that you need to ramp up your neuroplasticity with deliberate focus, something children don't need to learn Comment from : cherubin7th |

If my HMD wasn't currently glitching out I'd be eavesdropping on Japanese VRChat rooms to fill in my missing ability lolbrbrThere aren't a lot of non-English-only VRChat rooms aside from Japanese, but if there were more of them it'd be a really useful tool Comment from : keenaur |

I've been learning Russian I've been doing so by consuming a huge amount of children's media I've paired this with Duolingo, and honestly, I am able to do a good number of the exercises by "feel" I may not understand exactly what all the words mean, but I know which is the right word because it "feels right" This also helps with word order Comment from : Reverend Tom Ulrick |

Id theorise that a key factor to making this method effective is to forget about your native tongue entirely since it would closer replicate learning like a baby during childhood Comment from : TheRabbidt |

I always start learning a new languages by listening music and watching series in that language Comment from : Codex 404 |

Indeed very interesting method, but I guess there’s one big problem: the absorption gonna take a very long time and some massive dose of exposure for one to master a language I learned English as my 2nd language, also because it’s a compulsory subject in school, my English scores were stupidly low in elementary, but thanks to internet, movies and music, I started picking up words, grammars and how people uses it in a sentence, took me several years, now that I can just read or hear and understand things intuitively without translating it in my head Comment from : AnHuynh |
It's exactly how my aproach to learning english was I can't talk english very well But i would argue i am pretty decent at writtin communicationbrIn generel i try to givd myself autonomy and freedom and not limit myself by forcing myself to do certain things I have to be better yes i am still unfair to myself in many ways but i hope to get better Comment from : DurschfallTV |

I bet Virtual Reality games could really help with this Recreate those opportunities to map the language with actions and other natural inputs Hmmmmm Comment from : Christopher Wallace |

As an English teacher for 15 years, I found this video fascinating!brI have my reservations to to what point my students or even I (as a language learner as well) would be willing to really dive headfirst into something so passive and observational It doesn't seem like something that would fit the way adults do things nowadays, everyone being always in a hurry to speak and be understoodbrI wouldn't change my ESL methodology cos it's been getting me great results, but I absolutely love the food for thought on how things could be also done an entirely different waybrIt would make more sense giving students some less language heavy homework though, I guess Comment from : Roberto Junior |
I’m looking to learn German and I’m not even an adult yet, I might have to try something like this out Comment from : Octario |
This video also promotes (although, not explicitly) that children learn faster, which isn’t true Although children do not have to study intentionally, some adults who do learn intentionally learn the language faster The real problem is that many adults stop learning (fossilization) once they reach a level they internally feel is sufficient for their needs Comment from : Just Julia |

As an Iranian who moved to Ireland I can attest to this I would go to school everyday and hammer tons on info on english in my head like all my native peers After 2 years I not only could speak English but I had a decent grade compared to my classmates and you couldn't tell I wasn't a native speaker At the same time my sister was living with her husband in America I remember visibly asking her desprately to help me write a letter to my college or stuff like that My father worked in an Iranian concentrated environment so he never learned english that well My mom who was stay at home learnt more than him because of youtube But nowadays my big sister asks me to make her works sound fancier mind u she has a phd And I can speak better than anyone in my extended family and probably most Iranians who have immigrated Comment from : Ali Razi |

This is how I've upgraded my English from B1 to B2+ Lots of hearing, even right now I watch this video just because it's interesting to me but in the same time I'm learning English by watching it And I speak to native speakers whenever it's possible As a result at one test I even got C1 while my traditional studying ended at B1 level But right after that test my amount of everyday practice with native speakers was decreased and my English level dropped to B2+ and I feel the decrease in my fluency So practice matters Especially when you are a kid and have no cheat method known as "let's speak on the language which I already know" Kids hear the language everywhere and starting speaking that language is the only possible way for them to communicate with the world Comment from : ti |

I just got back to England after 9 years teaching English in China I wrote an 8000 word paper on second language acquisition in Chinese kindergartens My philosophy was always create an enjoyable environment that is language rich through contextual clues, give the children months and years without pressuring them to speak and they will know far more English than kids from other schools I was right every time Our kids were always put in top English set when they went to primary school!brbrThe funny thing is, other kindergartens did the opposite, and followed strict English language programs that followed specific weekly topics in structured English lessons It was counterintuitive to their goals Comment from : China Moto Adventures |

There’s an app called Rosetta Stone, and the learning process there kinda resembles the one described in the video Comment from : Ellodeya |
Great video Ever since seeing the video "How to acquire any language NOT learn it!" a year or two ago, I've been captivated by the ideas in Krashen's work from the 1980s which seemed to be received poorly at the time I'm going to try a combination of Polyglot-a-lot's "describe stuff in these magazine photos" method with the "crosstalk" method described in your blog which seems like a brilliant way for two people to learn, while avoiding the error of trying to speak the target language too soon Comment from : batlin |

Some how, I can still find a way to blame the capitalist system for this Comment from : freak gamer |

I kinda always thought this was the case Comment from : Andrew McIntyre |
I see a flaw here: in the end, he says there is barely any research on the topic Which is a problem when trying to explain what Dr Brown saw with his program I feel there should be way more studies to be able to say X causes Y, keeping in mind that explanation goes against today's most used kind of language learning method Comment from : MrPabgon |
What I think might be happening is that someone who doesn't know any language associates words in a language with the objects they see and learn, directly but someone who has learnt a language associates words in a new language to that language, thereby understanding the second language through the first language It is possible that our brains are better suited for the former, as more than one languages would not be required during the time language was evolving, for any individual Comment from : Aayush Jha |

I started “learning” japanese about 5 years ago at the age of 14 I had two sides to this experience, one at school with structured learning, and one at home in my own time on the internet, listening to music and comedy radio talk shows I was much more engaged and relaxed at home and quickly outpaced my official schoolingbrI can’t write very well, which holds me back in school But neither can children if they don’t learnbrI can acredit most of my proficiency with japanese to fond or strong memories, not hours and hours of rote studyingbrHigh study expectations in highschool didn’t improve my language skills They improved my test-taking skills Comment from : 123 happily |
Very interesting Look up GPA language learning (growing participation approach), it also focuses on just listening and understanding before beginning to speak There are courses and materials available for it, and I personally know many people who have successfully learned a foreign language with this method It requires a lot of time and a local "nurturer" (their word for teacher), who speaks to you and gives you this experience of hearing and understanding Comment from : Sam S |
This was one of the BEST videos I've ever seen! Why doesn't it have more views?? Comment from : Jedd Bluhm |

Arguably, the Irish had already discovered this first In Ireland we have districts known as Gaeltachts These are normal parts of the island, with one key difference: you are only allowed to speak irish This is how we kept our language alive and we send our children there to learn irish with an extremely high success rate Comment from : Corcra |

Yeah, this is BS There have been numerous neurological studies that show that we simply cannot master a language as we grow up At younger ages, you can still master a language through language acquisition, but this ability decreases exponentially as you enter adulthood Sorry to burst your bubble, but be happy with your current level of X foreign language You are not going to get much better Comment from : D H |
Good video I achieved fluency in English by watching tv shows, movies and youtube videos And the best part is that the learning process was pretty fun Comment from : Hellscream Games |

Watching this and seeing how it was explained that Dr Brown's method was carried out, it makes me wonder if things like TV shows, plays, and other entertainment media could be used to learn languages this way Comment from : truejimbob |

Children learn naturally Adults learn through grammar and translationbrbrThats the problem Comment from : Chiko Kishi |

Have you considered the „year abroad“ during the last years at school? Many students from my city do one year in another country to perfect their language skills or even learn an entirely new language brbrActually having to use the language every day for basic things like getting food and using it constantly and not using one’s native language is very efficient for becoming proficient in another language brbrThe common theme is the exposure to the language and for the „year abroad“ there are good studies out there! So maybe some of that might be applicable for this video as well;) Comment from : 100Lesemaus100 |

There are major brain changes during adolescence as well Comment from : Colin Osborne |

Children’s programming is generally a great resource, just about every language has its own, it’s designed to be understandable with a limited vocabulary and little to no grammar knowledge After that it’s about working up, like any child from basic to intermediate to regular Comment from : [P-CAN] Lt Freddy {pippas fbi agent} 🔌🐇 |

One of the most affluent English speakers I’ve met abroad was a Thai man who ran an elephant sanctuary way up in the mountains Dude never opened a textbook Comment from : Xan Ostler |

I can listen to my other languages but I can’t speak Comment from : Durandus |

The big difference is CARING to become fluent brWhen I lived in Canada to learn English, I would see Chinese forming friend groups with Chinese, Japanese with Japanese, Brazilian with Brazilian, etc, and in recess, they'd speak in their native languages Same often happens with immigrants, they usually move to where they already have a friend or relative, and when they get there they'll usually speak to the friend or relative in their free time in their native language So when these people achieve a level of proficiency that is good enough for people of that country to understand them, they usually don't care to improve it brI on the other hand, made the effort to get friends that weren't from my country Also children of immigrants usually go to colleges where they want to feel accepted by most of their peers, so they want to get fluent in the language, and become so Comment from : Maurício Gerhardt |
This is how I learned English as my 3rd language Growing up as Indonesian Javanese, my parents talk to me with Javanese through my father and Indonesian through my motherbrbrAbout 10 years old I wanders on youtube for god knows why and started to watch many English speaking video game youtubers Because I enjoyed them, I don't feel like I'm learning a language and couple of years go by I have the highes English proficiency score in my universitybrbrCurrently I'm learning Japanese and hoping to acquire it the same way as how I learn English, but adult life doesn't have that much free time so it slows down how much I'm learning now Comment from : Andri Ausfahrt Pribumi |
What amazes me the most about this video is that over the years that I've been trying to learn Spanish in school and Japanese on my own to various levels of failure (😅), I came to a similar conclusion as this: I need to immerse myself in the language first, speaking should come naturally, just like for children If I try to associate things or concepts 1:1, it requires so much processing power on the spot that it's extremely inefficient Learning "subconsciously" the concepts first is primordial, but it becomes impossible as adults Comment from : Louis Robitaille |
I would offer a counter-example I spend over 10 years learning a language via reading and listening but never speaking I still struggle to form anything beyond the most basic sentences Another language I've been learning for 2 months is about on the same level already This is from lots of reading and listening, but also a lot of speaking Comment from : Scooby Doobies |
Yuo are on to something Comment from : Patrick Mullaney |
Very suspicious of this When was the last time you had a conversation with a 5 year old - did they sound like they were fluent in the language? Probably not! Kids take a LONG time to learn a language People who study from books might take a few years to learn it, but that's still WAY less time than kids spend learning! Comment from : Ketone-Kun |
I would think that having to figure it out to achieve actual things you want would force you to engage it in a more involved way than passively learning through instruction The difference between looking at a map and understanding the structure of the city to navigate to your destination, versus blindly following GPS instructions step by step Comment from : blargg |
