If Federal Reserve Notes were to be devalued and the US economy "went to dust", do you really think the prices of premium collectible coins would rise? brThe value of collecting coins such as trimes (three cent silver) is in the appreciation of their history and artistry If you appreciate them for their beauty, history, and rarity (and can afford to), buy and enjoy thembrIn a stable economy they will likely hold value just as do the two cent bronze, three cent nickel, fractional currency, etc In a rising economy they will likely gain value as more who desire them can afford them In an economic collapse, they would likely become unnecessary luxuries The market would be flooded with all sorts of 'collectibles' as people en masse seek to convert such things for the purchase of usable items and necessities brbrbrIn my opinion, there is absolutely no certainty that precious metals would rise in value in a total economic collapse You can't eat the stuff Chickens and sacks of grain would be more desirable than piles of metal Gold will make a decent bullet, mind you, but so will lead brbrbrRegardless, to purchase trimes for their bullion value would be absolutely absurd The three cent silver coins of 1851 - 53 were only 75 silver (from 1854 through 1873 they were 90 like the dimes, quarters, halves, dollars) and per usacoinbookcom have a current melt value of $2971, or roughly 'ten times face' The lowest retail price for a trime in good condition (a low grade) is $2900, nearly one hundred times the value of silver therein The 1853 three cent coin shown in your video appears to be in Very Fine condition and, if so, retails for $5800 - about 200 times the value of its silver contentbrbrbrIf someone wishes to collect US 'type coins' for the joy and appreciation of it (as I do), have at it If you think precious metals are a good investment, buy bars of refined 999 silver, gold, platinum, or palladium If you want a good compromise, buy common US 90 silver coin (pre -1965 halves, quarters, dimes) known to dealers as 'junk silver' One can usually find plenty of (1948 - 1963) Franklin halves at or near the 'junk' price while at a small premium one can get 'Mercury' dimes, Walking Liberty halves, both beautiful coins with dates spanning 1916 through 1946 (dimes) and 1947 (halves) One pre - 1965 dime has over three times the silver content of a three cent silver at a fraction of the cost brbrbrOne can go 'silver mining' at banks, you know As many people are unaware that the 1965 through 1970 half dollars were 40 silver, they can often be found in rolls of half dollars purchased over the counter of your local bank The current melt value of a 40 half dollar is over $230 each It's like free money
