I found the vibro king had a narrow beam In larger clubs, i started to notice this gap in the crowd It was the vibro king hard boiling everybodies eyeballs Step 2 feet either side and you'd hear almost nothing I didn't enjoy it live That was using the stock cab too Comment from : Rodney McMinge |

Amazing video! Makes me want to buy one But what would you do if you wanted to use a delay pedal or something like that? Because of the missing fx loop Comment from : Tim Hallig |
Who is Doo-en Ellmen? 😅brbrSorry but a Vibro Champ will do it for all you bedroom poppers (and for recording) but when you play in a touring rock band with a loud drummer, you have to hear yourself on stage over a bunch of other instruments There is nothing worse than monitor soundbrLoud amps were good enough for 99 of people in the 60s & 70s whose sound and (live) records all of us admire …people like Duane Allman for example, so it’s good enough for me too (Never seen a single pic of him playing an 8” speaker amp live btw) Comment from : Mr K |
I'm surprised you didn't mention the Morgan AC20's EF86 power tube switch in the back, as it represents the Matchless type of gain you've usedbrThat is unless its been on the whole time lol Comment from : DweedleDee DweedleDoo |
Hey Paul, I know this is ab old video but my 2 cents, you can pair your Matchless and any loud amps with a Two Notes Torpedo and make it as quiet as you want You will require a good set of FRFR speakers like Yamaha DXR10 if you want to "feel the wind" Comment from : Buzzkillington |
Zoom 505 was the absolute best hahaha Comment from : Tyron Deakin |
They're not Comment from : The Weeezard |
Cannot go wrong with any of these amps!!!brThe gremlin is most versatile I have it Great for small gigs Also, have a 73 vibro champ My favorite practice and recording amp Never had or played a 5E3 brGreat channel!! Thanks! Comment from : SweetsMcGinty |
I have to agree In my 20's I bought a Carlsboro GLX150H and cab, progressed to a Peavy EVH5150 stack this was in my bedroom, in the middle of a council estate totally unusable Fantastic amps, but if I went anywhere near "1" let alone "10" I mean even at "1" that was 150 watts, and the amp was anemic - they never got going until you hit "6" to "8" - which you could never do at home If I could go back I'd be buying small, 10-30w tube amps, and a couple of small extension cabs for gigs But I was a heavy metal fan at the time and wanted my Wall of cabinets Also, your comments on using pedal based multi amps - I love them! Personally I use a Digitech RP225 which I have to say is great (newer models are available) but for sitting at home twiddling away, pedals and decent headphones are much better than a stack of speakers you can't turn up I also had a Fender Princeton Chrorus 75w, which sounded fantastic - but again go over "1" and the police are at the door You're better off with high quality, low volume - which you CAN pump into cab's for gigs if needed And most guitarists are not doing gigs Comment from : Da Mighty Shabba |
Paul’s passion for amazing tone is really fun to watch Now I want every amp in this video Comment from : mingistech |
After 30 years of being loyal to Marshall I will never use their products again My speaker is just out of warranty and they refuse to help I'm going to have to THROW AWAY My Stanmore II Bluetooth speaker Absolute sacrilege! Goodbye greedy Marshallbrbeware!!! Comment from : Maximus |
I hate loudness too Maybe its a hearing sensitivity issue or whatever but i prefer a sound that's torrelable for the ear Comment from : Kristi 94 |
Oh god i miss my 53 tweed deluxe By far the best , walk up, idiot proof , tone i've ever had for a strat It was sold on me, whilst out on tour It's the one amp i've never gotten over Comment from : Rodney McMinge |
I like the Tone King Gremlin distortion best, just amp no pedal boost Comment from : Rob H |

Yes! I hate loud amps too! Just got a little Marshall 1 watt tube amp It even has an effects loop I wish there were more choices in this category Comment from : Marshwitch |
Those are four gorgeous outstanding amps but, to be honest, none of them gets even close to the magic of the Matchless Comment from : AxiomOfChioce |
Just buy both fenders and call it a day 😆 Comment from : jimmyv |
Mojo was dripping out of that 53, it sounds incredible Comment from : 14U 14U |

I use a 5 watt 1x8 fender champ People say they can’t be gigged with, but they are full of shit They have great PA systems today and you can just mic it and bump it through the monitors Comment from : jeebus yaWeirdo |

I have the Randall Diavlo 5C It’s wonderful The 6L6 gives that high gain circuit a completely unique character Comment from : Kevin Birge |
Tweed amps don’t sound very good with most pedals besides a boost in my opinion and it showed in the video too Both distortion and fuzz sounded like it was making the amp fizz and flub out Comment from : Derek Macdonell |
Loud amps on the stage are a pain in the ass for everybody Comment from : Diego Jorge |
I love playing loud come on paul Comment from : Philip |
Freakin' Love my old Zoom Pedal - also love my Blues Jr😁 Comment from : elocrian |
Try the Reussenzehn el34 A small 5to 18 watts top You can change the powertubes on the fly Want to play an el84 or 6l6 today? Just change it And the sound is phenomenal! You can even use any speaker box with it 4*12 or 1*10? No problem Comment from : Vigilant Dr Dolittle |
I really regret selling my red knob champ, It was portable, loud enough but the clean and the break up were great Comment from : Blackbrooke |

(LONG!!) I'm a "retired" pro blues guy (71) that's been at it since the mid '60's You learn a lot over that long a period of time Small amps like the choices you have here are fine for what they are The really only TRUE standout is that '53 Fender Deluxe IMHO the 2nd is the Tone King Gremlin That's an awesomely done amp as I have very high regard for Mark Bartel as an amp designer and biz guy God Almighty, that's a rare combination in this day brbrThe Fender Vibro Champ "might" have been even better if you'd chosen to review a Blackface version from the mid 60's, perhaps pre-sale of Fender to CBS The Morgan? I'm unimpressed It's OK if that's your taste whateverbrbrMy personal choices for a small amp are one of the reissue Princeton Reverbs, and if you can get your hands on the real-deal mid 60's BF version, that much the better Mine is one of the reissues from a few years ago I got a 12" speaker baffle board and put that with a Celestion Greenback in the thing A 12" speaker easily fits to a Princeton Reverb, provided you either buy a new BB or rework the stock one It's a superb upgradebrbrI love Tone King amps I got my hands on an early TK Imperial in the Turquoise & White It was arguably the best amp I'd ever owned and sold it/traded it for God-Knows-What over 10 years ago I think it was way too loud for the blues work I was doing Like your Matchless, it could get WAY loud and bright but what a glorious sound! As a guitarist it would often make you wet your pants from the glorious tones you could produce Magic, pure magic!!brbrFinally: I leave you with the following IMHO stellar clip It's a twin-12in, 18 watt Marshall clone from Vibro King that, upon first hearing, blew me into the next county, Here's Greg Vorobiov doing the deed: youtube/EBvHr0YlFPA Comment from : ken sheldon |
I sold my AC15 (blue bulldog) and bought a UAFX dream Love it Great sound at any volume And: I hate when there is rattling or other noise from the amp there is already so much noise coming from vintage guitars And most tube amps have resonations on some notes I hate that xD Will probably buy the Ruby too Comment from : Joe Gridl |
One Amp can Beat them all, Peavey Delta Blues! Perfect clean and Overdrive, no Need for Pedals… Comment from : Arthur Nawrath |
I have a '57 Fender Deluxe and it's by far the best sounding amp without any pedals It also sounds amazing with a distortion pedal through a 2x12 cab Larry Carlton claims he played a '57 Deluxe on the Royal Scam album If so, it's no surprise Great video, Paul I'm gonna run out and get a Morgan Comment from : Trafy Knits |
I just bought a KR55 Rivera and an Orange PPC412 I can play it on 1 (out of 10 lol) on the dirty channel for about 30mins before the police arrive It sounds so good but I dont think they were kidding when they asked if I was playing stadiums They also make a KR100 version lol Comment from : JAWS211MX |
tweet fender sounds the best - just like blues deluxe :) Comment from : iku arden |
Heavy handed drummers drive most of the loud guitar amp craze However, I feel too loud when I practice at home, because I'm so used to that sound that it just sounds too weak at LOW volume And, that's probably a culmination of hearing loss and years and years of playing gigs and not protecting my ears It's a sad cycle that's hard to pull out of I have gone from a Peavey 5150 halfstack down to a Boss Katana 100 112 amp That amp is plenty loud and sounds great, and easy on my back, LOL, but I find myself missing that tube tone occasionally I have an old 1972 Princeton Reverb that is about to go into the shop Maybe I'll get back into the tube scene soon 🙂 Comment from : mason0316 |
Get the 53 Fender Deluxe :) Comment from : Rune Holm |
Great tones, loved the sound of the Morgan My only amp is a fender pro jr And it’s plenty amp for me Would love to hear what you’d get out of the pro jr Comment from : Cameron Scott Cairney |
Morgan and Tone King sounded best to me Comment from : Lauri Vennonen |
YupFender Brown amps are most certainly the best they ever made Few people have actually heard them in person, but those who have all agree that they're the best Fender ever made, blending the Tweed and Blackface tones Not just saying this bc I own a '62 Brown Concert either ;) Comment from : C Anton |
May I suggest a Fender Princeton Reverd (65 reissue) and a Fender Bassbreaker 007? Both are awesome Comment from : robiandolo |
Build a blast room Stick them in and mic them 👍 Comment from : Sandman - |
Paulbr It's not the tube amp you play;br Nor is it your super ability thatbr makes you a great player --- It's thebr bFACIAL CONTORTIONS/b br that the best players have,br conveying what they feel as theybr play, as you do Am I right or what? Comment from : RJB |
Yup Sold my Line 6 DT50 2X12 for the same reasonit was DEAFENING!! Sounded great and was super versatile (seriously a very cool ampnot your typical Line 6) but if you TOUCHED the volume knob, it'd blow your windows out lol Comment from : rmp5s |
Fender super 6 Comment from : Gary Clarke |

I recommend ENGL Ironball 20 - fucking amazing Comment from : kungfuseadog |
No VOX Amp in this list?broutreagous, blasphemous,br you name the words Comment from : Ludomir Steinbrück |
What do you think about the Marshall DSL5? I got it a couple of weeks ago and it has this nice little 05W switch, so I can go from 5 to 05 for practising Although I feel it might be a bit more suitable for metal Comment from : Jannik Claßen |
Is that a piece of fiber board tacked into the front of the Fender Deluxe? I can't really tell what I'm seeing there Comment from : Truth Ray |
Paul, your amps run the gamut from $1K tototo$8 - 15K on that Fender Deluxe!!!!! LOL, I almost had a coronary!!! They ALL sound deelish, though Each one is "just what I'm looking for" Comment from : Truth Ray |
I'm stunned at how good that Fender vibro champ sounds Comment from : Truth Ray |
I got a lot of good sounds out of my 505! Comment from : borkomasda |
I have big amps and seemed to gravitate toward them early on in my search for the tone I heard in my head Lately I've moved to smaller amps and have found the Princeton Reverb/Magnatone Panaramic Studio, Tweed Deluxe Clone, and Gabriel 18 Voxer using the EF86 Channel covers all of the sounds that make me feel good When I first got the Tweed Deluxe clone I was in love Probably the best plug and play experience I've ever had Comment from : Kirsten Ray |
The 15 watt Monoprice Stage Right sounds great and gets plenty loud Comment from : TubeRadiosRule |
I find myself owning a lot of amps over the years, and falling into the issue of loving the options that the larger amps come with, like master volumes for each channel, independent tone controls etc I prefer the size and weight of smaller amps, but they never have the same features as the larger counterparts If they did, I would have never bought any ridiculously large high powered heads It's too bad that amp companies don't use their brains and make a small amp with ALL the same features as the large ones I love the feel of when a large amp is crankedI mean, the air moves my pant legs That's awesome But my ears hate it So usually when I practice now, I am using my Fender Mustang lt25 I don't need pedals, and I have the same sound as my gig amp Actually you can gig with this amp, I've done it, without a mic even But I like my pedals moreand I prefer to use my IEM's for monitoring Comment from : Neil Snow |
That '53 Deluxe sounds great Unless it's been modified it uses 6SC7 primary tubes I understand it's hard to find ones that aren't microphonic When Ted Weber brought out a kit version, he redesigned it to use 6SL7 tubes They're not a drop-n replacement I built one of thosebrbrOne great thing about the Deluxe design is the interactive volume controls You can crank the volume on the channel you're plugged into, and the other volume control works as a master volume - but it's not intuitive It works backwards - you turn it up to lower the volume Comment from : 1truemoose |
They all sound amazing Thanks for the video Comment from : Doc Ondrusek |
Hi, why not a Matchless SC-mini ? Comment from : Ruk |
I run my marshall DSL at 75w, ultra clean with pedals brI love that sound Comment from : Endezeichen Grimm |
lovely video, but if anyone is looking for a more affordable low wattage great sounding tube amp: Egnator tweaker 15w is an awesome pedal platform with 6v6 power tubes, it's pre-amp sounds like crap so avoid its built-in pre-amp gain (sounds like heaven with good drive pedals and cranked master vol) Also, modern day Princeton revved is great, modern day backstar HT5 is pretty good all of these can get had for far less than 1k USD Comment from : zaqintosh |
those 505 s had awful tones lol , but i used mine more that the amp because i could throw headphones straight in the back like practice amp Comment from : david buchan |
Ac10 with 10" greenback is shockingly good You should try it Comment from : Robert arthur |
I have a Fender champion 600 and I love to bits I use pedals with it as well and it still sounds great I have even gigged with it kicking it up to the pa and I was impressed with the performance of such a tiny valve amp Comment from : Mr M L |
Bigger amps can sounds just as great I have a 1967 Fender Twin Reverb and at lower volumes my Les Paul sounds warm and smooth Cranked it also sounds greatso it offers the best of both worlds Comment from : John E |
I‘‘ve been watching the Gremlin for quite a while now and I was getting close to purchase until now I listened to the 53 Fender Deluxe which has an amazing tone Comment from : Vince D |
You should try a Matchless Baby Comment from : Dominic Cordisco |
Get an Ampeg with a 6V6 circuit, they all use octal preamp tubes like that old Deluxe - Fender used octals in the early 1950's designs Jet, Rocket, Mercury, or Reverberocket About $1,000 or less if you look, best deals on old tube amps imho (I've got all four mentioned) Comment from : Pharmer David |
I like my Orange rocker 15 I can cut the power in half twice if I want to and still crank it Comment from : Cherokie Tabac |
That Deluxe! Comment from : Guitarpenter335 |
I have a 1959 5-watt Gibson amp that came with the 1959 Yellow TV model Les Paul single coil, (which I also still have) That amp was my main amp for many years The tone was unparalleled I just miced it up through a Fender Twin to make it loud enough to be heard in clubs over the drums and bass Comment from : Aubie Tigerton |
The Morgan has that awesome squish Comment from : String Locker |
Yummy Morgan Comment from : John Collins |
Yeah idk why I just bought a 74' twin reverb An 85 watt 2x12 doesn't make a whole lot of sense for me to be playing in my room lmao But god does it sound fantastic Comment from : Soups |
