I've been taking ECE free evening classes & although I enjoy working with children I find the class extremely boring & most is pure common sense Transferring to mass media on monday hoping that'll be interesting it's free 😂 Comment from : Ruby Lou |
childhood educators make the same as a young person just starting out in the work force working at a fast-food establishment We essentially help parents raise and Teach there children This is the hardest job Teaching, feeding, changing diapers, challenging behaviors the list is endless and the stress level in this industry is very hard on an educator that is why most skilled educators are leaving they can have the same pay less stress and work, working at the mall Comment from : Brenda Turley |
Wanted to be teachers not ped dough file groomers Comment from : litterbug |
Meanwhile here in London we're on £10 a hour and apparently that's considered a good wage Comment from : D&B |
I rlly, rlly want to get an ece diploma but the pay is holding me back😢 Comment from : Oompa Loompa |
It is very sad that we paid as "baby sitter" It is very hard to live as a professional My role is special need support in preschool, but paid like no difference with others However, most of the daycare or preschool doesn't care you have a SNE or not Because they can use ECEA to do it for less So, why do you go through more education, more money to get pay less? It is totally an insult Comment from : ShuoArtStudio |
I can’t do this anymore 😞 Comment from : K XOXO G59 |
I found this as I am thinking of leaving the field since seeing I can make just as much at inn and out It is so sad considering the years of experience and I have my site supervisor permit Even if I got my BA in the field it's not worth it Comment from : Kristina amante |
Thank you to all the Early Childhood Educators out there ❤ there needs to be more advocacy around providing support to ECE Comment from : Amrita Gill |
Seriously people dont you understand the power you have? Strike !!! If you strike so many people and industries will be affected You deserve a pay rise Comment from : my phone |
I used to be in early childhood industry for five years High number of students, high medical leave rate, huge amount of stress from the expectations to deliver curriculum perfectly left me exhausted I went to software engineering and didn't look back for a while Comment from : Marie Lee |
I wonder if there’s alot of positions at ece facilities that aren’t really contributing at all? Companies I worked at I have always found people getting paid pretty much doing nothing… or if the owners of the day cares are just keeping too much to themselves?brOr just the simple fact that day cares aren’t charging enough… brI really have no idea I just wish these ece professionals can get paid a decent wage Comment from : 蕉蕉康JJKang |
Maybe we should be looking at why there are so few people who are able to start daycare businesses On its surface, if you have 20 kids whose parents are paying 1500 a month for daycare, that is an annual income of 360k a year That is more than enough to pay 2 people a decent wage and cover operating costs Is it perhaps government regulation that is driving up expenses? If there is such a high demand for child care, why is the supply so limited? Comment from : victoryOTP |
I graduated in 1998, and at the time my instructors told me the burn-out rate was 5 years I wonder what it is now? I'm older and will have to leave the profession soon, as the physical toll is becoming too much It has gotten much worse since 2020 I'm very worried about my future I'm trying to save some money, to go back to school Comment from : Alison |
This hits the nail on the head, I have been in the field 10 years, its been very challenging This is a great job financially IF you are just starting out but now that I live on my own and have bills, without my partner I wouldnt make rent Things need to change from the governements side of things Comment from : april |
Eces received nothing and it’s hard to live on the pay Comment from : andrea whalberg |
Pay is low for eces and no respect and is not enough to live on especially now inflation Comment from : andrea whalberg |
How could my child receive better care with that sort of teacher to child ratio vs learning at home where they should be anyway We need to homeschool and people should get paid enough to have one parent at home to do it I don't trust the US with my black son even if my local preschool is free America just wants to send money to the military not the schools All they care is about testing them not about their happiness No wonder the suicide rates are up and drug abuse Smh Comment from : Purple Glitter |
I get paid 2354 with benefits and sick leave Comment from : TheCabIsHeresOhYeah |
I'm studying early childhood education and god this makes me so sad I'm considering changing my profession Comment from : Valeria Conde |
Yes; I feel We are underpaid Lack of Benefits Yet; We love OUR Babies! Thats why We Don't Leave! I work with 6months to 1 year old I am thinking hard about leaving in the Fall We get sick; but we still have to Work I stay under stress Comment from : Addie McConnell |
Meanwhile, parents are paying an arm and a leg for daycare So if the caregivers themselves are not getting paid, who is? Comment from : Sca |
I left the field 2 months ago… I have a BAS and wasn’t paid, my hours cut now I’m making twice the amount out of the field… have health and 401k plan… I miss the kids but need to look out for myself Comment from : Bluxlight |
The assistant is nobody even with a degree Comment from : Edwige Jean |
You don't need college degrees to baby sit children Colleges are lying to you Also they do NOT get paid like they have a college degree Maybe reality is trying to tell you some thing Comment from : Basic Stick Figure |
A good education goes a long way, especially during those early years And the way these undervalued early childhood educators are paid just goes to show how much the leaders in this country care for their next generation It's sickening Comment from : Kevin Ackerman |
Scary for me since I’m earning my degree now in early childhood development 🥺😬 Comment from : AnnaTheDancePrincessSlay |
As an ECE teacher I can attest that the work is hard but rewarding That being said something has got to be done about the pay and long hours We should get the same pay, and time off as other teachers Comment from : Tiffany Daugherty |
I was never an ECE but I was a teacher untilm2006 when I left They can't pay me enough to go back to the classroom now Comment from : Rosa Mery Rojas-DelCerro |
As a former Early educator myself! Lack of pay! Especially in the state of Florida! The 4 plus years of schooling & continuing eduction training ! Many lack giving there stuff support healthcare benefits ect… Pay is horrible! With my experience & EDU I’m offered $15-$20 hour sad part rent here in Florida is double my pay We are not just babysitters !! Without early education specialist many children would lack so much and so would the families Many families need caregivers and so does the each state especially children who are in the foster care system must be in with a license caregiver Comment from : SASSY CAT |
The crazy thing is I'm making way more as a babysitter than when I used to work in early childhood education (10X the work and taking care of way more kids) The pay is ridiculously low for the things we have to do on a daily basisstill miss and think about the children I used to work with though ❤️ Comment from : Daughter of Jesus |
Also any grandparent or mum or even dad who raises kids at home is almost never paid Comment from : Everybodys Best Friend |
Yep I've done this job Should be paid about 200 per hour Comment from : Everybodys Best Friend |
I’ve been working in ECE for years, and all of my friends who have different careers get paid way more than I do but don’t do early as much work as me Comment from : Kiara Harris |
As a teacher is messes me up that billionaires have so much money but not our doctors nurses teachers elections etc we need to start understanding who is actually valuable Comment from : Jules |
In Ireland is the same story, minimum wage and the teachers need to have L 6 while Healthcare workers have L5 in adult certification The work is very tiring and demanding I have never understood why these teachers are not given the credit for their hard work and decent salary It isn't a babysitting facilityDisgraceful PS At the moment I'm studying SNA( special needs assistant) and it's L5, the same curse that I'm doing also includes L6 Child's development and play where they have to do observations, write up IEP plans and assignments but after doing all that, they go to work and get paid the same salary as somebody waiting tables with no qualifications Maybe they should leave and see if anybody will start appreciating the preschool teachers' work, it's about time Comment from : Malin Sotta |
If there is anything I want my tax dollars to go to it's this We need to do better Comment from : Carly D |
L know it because my daughter is two get her to write would very month to month it take a lot of work Comment from : latoya ramnarine |
🙏TELL THE TRUTH AND SHAME THE DEVIL TELL THE TRUTH AND NOTHING BUT THE TRUTH SO HELP US GOD ALMIGHTY🙏 Comment from : Southern Girl |
Babysitters? These people see and deal with the children on a more consistent basis than the parents do Most of the habits, manners and linguistics the children pick up are mainly from school settings, so whoever said these people are "just babysitters" should shut the fk up Comment from : Vi0l3nc3 |
I'm a pre-k teachers assistant, 1325 an hour is what I make I got this after being a stay at home mom and I dont necessarily need a job and can continue to stay home but yes the pay is trash Comment from : tiny terrorist negotiator |
I closed my childcare center last year after 30+ years because of BURNOUT! And I had to find a higher paying job so I can build up some retirement benefits I love teaching but hugs won’t pay the bills!🙁 Comment from : Teresa Andrews |
but why are they squishing the poor baby bumblebees? 😢 Comment from : j h |
There have been many studies on brain development in young children (ages 1 to 5) which have shown that the stimulation received during this time can dictate how well children preform in school later on And we all know that academic performance often determines the "success" of someone's career later on In other words ECEs are laying the ground work for kid's success later in life By not investing in ECEs we are divesting in the future generation Comment from : A May |
Even in Indonesia 😅 Comment from : MitMit me |
I just wanted to give all the Teachers and ECE's out there A BIG SHOUT OUT! THANK YOU Thank you for teaching my kids, thank you for being kind and sweet to my kids and for being there when I can't throughout the day! You guys are the best ! I appreciate u! Comment from : YENAIRA ROMAN |
I’d rather stay at home with my child Comment from : Rosary Catholic |
ECE student in New Zealand here It’s so interesting to see that ece educators around the world are facing the same issues I’m not even finished with my ECE degree and I want to leave it already The problem with the profession is that A, parents do not see early years as an important time of learning and B, the current structure of ECE isn’t actually benefiting children the way that it should The best teachers I’ve met in my 2 years of study do not like, and do not believe in the business focused structure of ECE The poor pay is only the start of these issues Comment from : Jessi |
Peak ABA Comment from : tmderksen1 |
The funny thing is that many elementary, middle and high school teachers complain constantly about not getting paid enough Here in California a regular school teacher can easily make $60- $100k a yearbrDaycare teachers, no matter how much they work, will never be able to do that with the money they are currently making brAnd many daycare workers are just as educated and just as valuable as a regular school teacher Something doesn’t fit here Comment from : MrsMysteryWoman2244 |
What that second teacher said about how it is emotionally rewarding but not financially feasible for most of us: 💯 Comment from : MrsMysteryWoman2244 |
ECE professionals are undervalued, underpaid, overworked and overloaded You would think a society might care a bit more about the people caring for its children and raising the next generation Comment from : Eugenie J |
I teared up watching this, ECE was my life for 4 years and I loved every single minute and every child I took care of with all of my heart and soul ❤ I HAD to leave the profession because I couldn't afford living 5 days off a year, no benefits, no health insurance (and we get sick a lot), no 401K, 2 paid holidays a year and no pay for snow days!!!! I had to buy a lot of my supplies to ensure learning was happening in a fun and constructive way brChildcare workers deserve more!!!!! Comment from : IslaYui |
Agree As ECE myself, I’m working while working on other things too so I can leave later I can’t imagine myself doing it and be able to save enough money to retire someday Comment from : Wanyue Lbrand |
After working in a school for a few years I rather work any type of other job than deal with children anymore Comment from : aurora maria |
😥😢 Comment from : dnj20 |
I just made the jump after 20 years Like the one worker said, if not for the financial support of a spouse, I would not have been able to continue to work in the field of Early Childhood education and I have three degrees The masks, and vaccination pressure caused me to leave ultimately Comment from : Educate 42 |
I also want to add that toxic work environments (lack of support from management, nepotism, rewarding staff despite of inappropriate treatment of fellow coworkers, not being paid for mandatory meetings/events)brare an additional factor in causing people to leave… Comment from : Lucina |
We are much more than babysitters we are educators who is guiding and caring for young children, inspiring children to develop their creativity, art, dramatic play, math, science, social studies, geography, biology, music, circle time, learning how to be independent and a lot more, repetitively We are the secondary caregiver and educator For that being said, we deserve more than minimum wage! We need at least $25/ hr to start! Comment from : Annabelle H |
Why can’t people just let kids be at their current stage of life? Why do they always have to be preparing them for the next stage of life? Stop doing math and science with them! Get rid of those tables and chairs! Comment from : The House Spouse |
I can’t believe they only pay these remarkable folks minimum wage IN TORONTO!!! WTF Comment from : Abraham Peter |
As someone who is getting into this Field I am both excited and scared I know I will not be making much and that I’ll have a lot of student loans to pay back but at the same time I love the kids and I never feel like I’ve worked a day when I’ve been with them Comment from : DJ Anderson |
We love to teach!! Even in Guatemala we have the same problem!! I could be paid 150 more working at a call center!!! It's really a shame!! I worked at a company not related to educational before They usted to paid me more and with less stress than as a being a teacher What do I mean? Please consider our job as a precious opportunity to form great hearts with a lot of skills!! God bless all the teacher that teach with love!! Comment from : Miss Jenny Gutiérrez |
God bless these ladies!!! ♥️ Comment from : Through faith and grace |
ECD is the hardest job,i am Level 5 educater,I love kids and done my level 5 june2022,it keep me going I am 61years and still going strong Comment from : Sharon Booysen |
Its worse for all teachers and educators in UK Always been criticd and always puting them under extra pressure Comment from : N I |
Underpaid and under appreciated Lots of schooling just to be considered a babysitter Comment from : arlethdelaf |
$1800 dollars an hour in Toronto? Man I left that dump of city and returned back to the maritimes because the rents were starving me of living a half decent life I make a few dollars less than that, but I work in a group home, mostly doing crossword puzzles, yes, I am just a sitter, but, I don't pay rent , only utilities, because my employer owns property and does not charge rent to his workers I too have a degree, but it is worthless Toronto is no longer a place to survive in, unless the government is paying your bills Comment from : Lee Eatmon |
Just yesterday I was cautioning someone considering this profession The lack of a living wage and support (even within the system) is crippling Early childhood simply isn't valued in our society Comment from : Dawn D |
ECE is not an easy job, I’ve worked in the field for 4 years now, and genuinely love working with the children and being able to watch them grow and learn It is really an under paid, under appreciated job It’s wild to me that childcare providers, who put so much time and energy into working with their children (especially through a pandemic), get paid so little, especially when the cost of childcare is SO expensive I have a BA and am working on a CDA and barely make above minimum wage No one stays bc no one can afford to stay Comment from : Jess D |
I worked at a preschool for 10 years and loved it! I agree with these early childcare professionals that job is very stressful and so rewarding at the same time I wish we were compensated more I recently left that field to become a flight attendant Comment from : Sunny ☀️ |

1) As an elementary teacher and a mother, I do not want my child in a classroom with special needs children, if those children show signs of verbal or physical outbursts beyond that of other children I've spent years watching 29 elementary children in a class of 30, be traumatized while an out of control Sped child hurls books, chairs and even desks at them I've had to "clean out a classroom", in which I tell my crying students to cover their heads and run while a Sped Child destroys their personal belongings and trashes the classroom I specifically keep my son in private Montessoris where there aren't resources for Sped I cannot imagine what difficulties PreK Inclusive classroom teachers must have brbr2) ECEs get the full brunt of parental failure If a parent hits, swears, drinks, uses drugs, threatens, abuses or is toxic in any way, those kids will reflect it in ECC and those teachers are forced to work with it, if they want any sense of safety or normalcy in their classroombrbr3) ECEs also get the full brunt of toxic entitlement parents Every parent who bashes educators, refuses to parent consistently, has no discipline routine or simply assumes that their child can do no wrong, is on unfiltered show in an ECC classroom Those teachers have to re-teach every aspect of communal communication while parents openly drop the ballbrbrECEs are saints My husband and I are two teachers, we barely clear 90k, but despite 11k of that going to my son's school, we pay for lunches and bonuses for his teachers They deserve it They work themselves to the bone for very little reward outside of a hug from a child and a scoff from a Parentzilla Comment from : KMusic |
I can NEVER wrap my head around why the people who are literally shaping our children’s minds and essentially helping to raise them - are not paid well and taken care of? It’s sickening that teachers and ECE’s are not paid handsomely Smh Comment from : Twilly BBE |
I didn’t CHOOSE this walk It chose me Which is why I think I’ve chosen to be paid SO so poorly and be undervalued Not anymore!! Comment from : HollyLynee |
Interesting seeing this happen (early childhood workforce shortages) in Canada, Australia, Germany, etc When you undervalue early childhood educators, you undervalue children Comment from : Freya Sure |
as an ECE teacher I love these people It is a pure labor of love We , as teachers are planting seeds of knowledge at the earliest level Comment from : Rebecca Lowe-Hodges |
Most under valued, under paid and under respected professional profession 🥺 I began this journey in 1979 and little had changed Wages often hover just a bit above minimum wage for the entry positions even though these people have a year of college and yet the responsibility of caring for the children of our world Very sad Hard to keep staff and hard to recruit Comment from : Patty |
I work at a Head Start program (gov preschool) and since I started only 2/6 of the teachers have stayed and they've only been able to replace one of thembrAnd there's NO WAY the gov can guarantee more free childcare through the program Comment from : Eleanor Jones |
Pay people what they are worth Comment from : Jeanette Hutchinson |
This profession has been misunderstood so I'm happy to hear that FINALLY these ECD'S are taking their power back by walking away from their professions How long must one be abused and taken advantage of ? I never understood why they are getting paid such a LOW salary when these are our guardians / teachers for our precious children ❤ They are angels on earth that must be appreciated and respected 🙏 Comment from : Teresa Fraser |
ECE'S also have to be registered , so there's a yearly fee of $160 in Canada which only changes your title from ECE to RECE ! Without paying the annual fee, you cannot work or use the title as an ECE or RECE, so you have a diploma for nothing! All those ECE'S paying into the College of ECE and you get nothing out of that $160 they sure make a lot of money!!! Comment from : Sonay |
It's heart breaking Let's make a collective effort to protect these essential workers Our children development depends on them Comment from : Jungle Julia |
I agree I am always spoiling my sons Daycare teachers I know daycare is expensive but these girls are tsking care of the most precious thing i have in this world They are amazing and patient I hope all parents can bring them treats, gifts and a nice christmas bonus$ atleast on their bdsys and end of the year cause they truly are doing sooo much Long hours I respect them so much Comment from : Anndy |
Childhood workers, nurses, PSW’s and truckers Sick of being treated horribly and leaving in droves Comment from : Malcolm5252 |
i hate when people compare teachers to babysitters as an insult babysitting/nannying is just as important! they don't just change diapers and watch them play nannies keep children safe, help build their social skills, teach, perform first aid, transport children to various activities, manage fights, care for children with special needs, make sure the kids are fed nutritious foods and that they get exercisestop belittling ALL professions! Comment from : monica renee |
CBC News Trudeau's propaganda machine Defund the CBC Comment from : J Barone |
Yes Parents want everything to be perfect but they don't want to pay for that quality service Department of social services keep harassing the owners, take long period to approve a simple expand, take years to provide a waver requests Now the the gov create TK classes since they need to do something for access teachers But as a school administrator I can see how people leaving this buisness There are many frustrated teachers and struggling private owners Comment from : Bhagya Wijewardane |
i am currently using my position as an ECE to fund my part time education in another field even though this job is my passion, the pay and regulations do not reflect the time, effort, energy, dedication and education required for the role i cannot continue to degrade myself by working in such bad conditions Comment from : bee |
Yes 1000 true !!! brMany childcare facilities do not provide , insurance, benefits , retirement, etcbrWe are teaching and molding the next generation for peanuts brYou can flip burgers and make 16-18 an hour but you will not be making that as a preschool teacher Comment from : Sonja Horn |
We are totally undervalued! It's been like this for the totality of my career I graduated from college in 1984 Not much has changed Now we have to pay dues every year for the College of ECE They are not really a support for us but for the parents We don't get the same respect as teachers in the school boards Time for change Thanks for shining the light on this Comment from : Carolyn Whelan |
