Hey! Placebo effect can strongly affect even health for up to about 37 of subjects brHowever, this effect FADES after about 4 months, so mere belief alone is not sufficient for long-term or permanent change, though the optimism bias it induces WILL make you happier brHappiness IS a valuable choice, so look for your "silver lining" optimism - Happiness, though technically a bias, WILL have long -term effects, and help both yourself and others over lifetimes! Outcome bias is very prevalent in minor league hockey, which was something I figured out before I even knew what cognitive biases were Someone would do something wrong and end up scoring, but rather than being criticized by the coach, their actions were perceived as good because they scored from it Comment from : Tetzy |

When my daughter was about to go up to high school, I naturally chose the best school (based on their performance) in the area This school had an entrance exam that, reluctantly, she sat and passed Unfortunately, this was NOT the school she wanted to attend, because most of her friends would be going to another school This other school didn't have any entrance exam and it's results were pretty poor (less than 2 going on to higher education) Eventually I got my way and she went to the "better" schoolbrbrA few months in and, despite her usual excellent grades, she still wasn't happy I naturally just reiterated the better performance figures of her school and she blew my mind with her logic "Of course they get better results, they only admit over achievers Their success rate is NOT down to their teaching, it's down to the students they have"brbrWith that I finally agreed to let her transfer to the school of her choice She went on to have great success, being the first in this "poorly performing" school to be accepted into a prestigious university (Cambridge) This made me very conscious of the bias I had shown for that school based on outcomes I don't know if this bias has a name but it's something I now notice in so many other situations Comment from : Ken Fullman |

Item two is stated incorrectly You say that terrorism is the biggest threat to the United States The refutation is non sequitur The opinion is not necessarily based on comparatively how many people die from terrorist stacks but how big a threat terrorism is to the Republic It can be argued that Congress is the biggest threat to the US but they don’t directly kill anyone Comment from : Aaron Dyer |

What stupid intellectual came up with this ridiculous video? All of your evidence is based on statistics and you know what that’s worth Your comparison of terrorists to cows is just absurd Cows are not any sort of danger to the world, but terrorism is horrible Your statistics are very misleading Comment from : Brian Saxophone Ransom |
|
Heuristic bias comparisons are absolutely obsolete, you compare information that is very questionable, location related and dependant on "person likely to be killed" relation to the entitiesbrHillarious Comment from : plabs plabs |

Whenever we are attempting to ascertain truth, you must always bear in mind the idea that we can make items apply that really don't - cognitive bias Separating fact and speculation is difficult Facts lead to speculation But when you have enough facts to support the hypothesis, it becomes circumstantial evidence of truth Comment from : Juliet Jowett |
|
The bandwagon effect is interesting It can actually be quite logical to accept the opinion of the group First of all you may trust the opinion of the group more than your own Second you may not care to put in the effort to arrive at your own conclusion but it may be troublesome for whatever reason to simply not have an opinion on the matter Third we are social creatures and it rarely pays to be the sole naysayer in a group, being accepted may be more important than being right Comment from : studentofsmith |

Falling coconut? Is that really true? That sounds like it might fall in that 99 of all statistics that are made up on the spot If you are unlucky enough for a coconut to fall just as you're standing under it, how would it kill you? It's not good for you It would definitely hurt It would probably cause a concussion but death? Maybe in a small percentage of those who its happened to but now we're talking about a VERY small number of people Terrorism, while rare, has killed a great many people in the last few decades Mostly around that 01 year but not all of it That doesn't quite ring true but I could be wrong Maybe like, coconut farmers or something spend a lot of time under coconut trees Who knows? Comment from : Paul TheSkeptic |

Awesome VDO mate! Comment from : Harmandeep Singh |

This is an awesome video, but it's hard to accept that in a video on COGNITIVE BIAS, the narrator would use "He" when talking about a manager, a stock trader, an election candidate and a computer buyer In fact, I'm not sure any of his examples referred to "She" So disappointing that he would be so blind to his own bias Comment from : SpeakHappiness |

not sure your example for the anchoring bias appliesbrbrcase 1:bryou think you are paying 20k for a car worth 30kbrbrcase 2:bryou think you are paying 20k for a car worth 10kbrbrit is completely rational and unbiased (though acting under incomplete information in this case) that when paying a fixed amout of money, you prefer spending the money on the object of higher qualitybrbeing lied to is not comparable to being biasedbrbrso if you prefer buying milk that costs 1 dollar instead of buying milk that costs 1 dollar (discounted from 2 dollars), you are not being biased even if it is the identical product, assuming that quality reflects price you are simply receiving deceiving information regarding quality but you are acting rationally you can be completely rational and bias-free and still fall for lies and misinformationno matter how rational you are, you will never be able to verify every single piece of information you are ever provided with Comment from : inappropriately aligned metaphorical nourishment |
