[Please bear in mind, I'm an IT, not war, logistics, or even public affairs guy] On the third man's question which was in my understanding succinctly put 'Why not use the populous to our advantage to avoid the enemies destructive means and put cities in a siege and starve them out' Dr Nagl doesn't really outright say why that is a valid or invalid idea but instead states to look at an article on Colonel H R McMaster and the American Military's early strategy in Afghanistan Honestly, I skimmed the article and didn't see much directed toward exact strategies on modern siege warfare I'm not sure if it even could be done for what the article claims to have been a 250,000 person city at the time, and if it could have been done it certainly wouldn't have been humane Put simply, I believe Dr Nagl feels that this way of thinking would be relatable to the early mistakes and in direct opposition to one of the tenets he laid out in his speech being roughly "A key to rooting out insurgents is the loyalty of the people" which comes from making them feel secure and not inhumanely starving them along with the insurgents Does anyone have any extra information to corroborate or deny my thoughts? Additionally, while the man's plan seems a valid solution for a small settlement given that they would certainly starve faster and more equitably thus being slightly more humane, it gives no forethought to insurgents spread across multiples settlements and gaining population aid in the event of recapture/re-invasion of enemy forces and if anything may incite aid to the enemy If anyone sees this and could help clear it up for me, it would be much appreciated Comment from : Ryan Johnson |

|
Was looking to learn something from this lecture, but had to tune out because of the fellow's 15 minutes of preening self-congratulation Also because his, and the US's accomplishments in Desert Storm aren't nearly as impressive as these ladder-climbers would want others to believe brbrJust the facts, ma'am That's all I want Comment from : Woodscraps1798 |

Middle East war strategy is more easily mastered by those who study Islam in depth This fella seems to think he knows everything but doesn't understand this most import thing, that being the mindset of an enemy who is absolutely confident in his convictions and unafraid for his life Without some sort of personal experience with radical religion this guy will never understand Jihadi warfare brThat sort of arrogance has likely killed every man under his command brHas he learned nothing in his studies, door to door combat against guerrilla fighters is no different than jungle warfare Intelligence aided by a massive sniper corp and drones is the only answer to ending this war as nothing is more demoralizing than a bullet or bomb from nowhere brThe Jihadi mindset celebrates the death of just one US fighter as we do the overwhelming victory of one thousand insurgents Preventing EVERY casualty but inflicting continual casualties on the enemy (and not innocent civilians) is key to persuading him to stop fighting These people fight for satisfaction and revenge We must take that from them first Patience and strength in our occupation is a must If they want to kill Americans make them come to us But that will never happen, because there is no money in a war in which there is no destruction of expensive equipment is there? In other words, what's the best way to clean up after the banker's war? Yeah, I imagine convincing the native population that is for their own good would be a difficult task Al Qaeda turned the twin towers and building seven to dust and Libya was a humanitarian effort? Must be tricky to teach the cadets to think but not think too much brbrOops, almost forgot, God bless Comment from : RandomVariable |

So help me understand, as soon as the people we spent billions, hundreds of billions on, simply folded as soon as they were left alone? A somewhat more influential military thinker once said, "if you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle" That seems to sum up US foreign policy, and this man's talk pretty well brbrHere you have a military "expert" who seems unable to locate the source of the so-called "Islamic State's" fighting capacity He reduces it to an almost cartoon-style villain like Cobra Command from GI Joe, possessing an inexplicably inexhaustible capacity to fight multiple nations at once using only stolen oil and seized military equipment from bases that when in operation required constant and regular resupply Who is resupplying those bases now? And how? From where? With what supplies, spare parts, weaponry, from what factories? brbrClearly ISIS receives state sponsorship from well beyond its boundaries That Nagl and his audience seem blissfully ignorant of this fact is very troubling If "military thinkers" are oblivious to a very obvious big picture - are they really thinking? Steve, I can't agree more Comment from : Skiddles 2000 |

Also; I think the guy is on the right track saying you need to focus on winning minds, not battles Granted, it will be necessary with some battles, but when it comes to all warfair, you need to win people's support first and foremost Just my thoughts on it, from everything delI/del have seen while studying warfair from the antique and up to modern, it's a reoccurring themebrAnd it would help if you get the media to explain just how bad laws the shia thing is that they're trying to enforce Honestly, until I saw this, from all I had heard, all they did was wanting people to be forced to worship allah and the basic shit of that, and send them to jail or at worst stone people who refused to obey It didn't seem quite as horrible as it is Media also focus more on usa as moneygrabbing oil-fanatics If you can get the media to explain WHY you need the forces to stay put, you'd have more support But I don't think the common man (at least outside the states) understand why And claiming it is to free the country is to shallow and thus seen as a lie Comment from : Nathanael Winters |
|
"and until you find a way to change the dynamic that causes people to become insurgents this war will continue forever"brWell said, Cassandra Comment from : Reichhard Buerger |
