The Truth
Its mostly a scam, the mega rich do it to avoid tax and usually set the charity up themselves sneakily via other people and bank accounts etc, the evidence is being sent all arround the world to the right people

I wonder where Elon Musk is on donating his money to charities
Comment from : YingApplebox

Dr Michael Suns School for Maths
i dont think it makes sense to calculate donations relative to net worth It might make sense to measure the charitable impact relative to the amount donated Bezos does not deserve the shade that graph or comment insinuates, the guy gets to do whatever he wants with his money
Comment from : Dr Michael Suns School for Maths

Why do foundations hold onto so much of the money?
Comment from : Chris Susel

Vitalijus Markevicius
I might be wrong here, but it seems like business people like to invest rather than just give it away The capital that is dedicated for charity is probably used for investing and dividends are paid for actual charity The bigger the capital the bigger few percent is br Not sure what Jeff Bezos is up to, he might just be maximalist/perfectionist and sacrificing social part of himself for whatever is on his mind Sort of stuck in a loop (happens)br Just a thought
Comment from : Vitalijus Markevicius

John Wilkes
To whom or what do they give, tho?
Comment from : John Wilkes

Gerald Butler
Look who puts the money back into the system Elon is creating jobs every day and that is the difference between good or bad rich people Bezos has taken for so long and still raises prices even during the pandemic When companies raise prices during the pandemic this tells me that these companies don't care about people They are full of greedy #$@$#$^@

Long live Tatas and Azim PremjiThey never brag about their donation
Comment from : Sumit Mog

Evan Chan
So the money for donations is basically coming from the government in the form of tax deductions (money the government would have received but doesn’t ask for in return for a charitable donation)?
Comment from : Evan Chan

Xiani Xiir
The rich only donate their money to the rich making them richer , it is all a scam to evade taxes

Random Cubing
Governments should set a limit to one's wealth, say 1 billion - the rest goes to public amenities and welfare People simply do not need that much money in their lifetimes
Comment from : Random Cubing

Can't stand seeing blundering Biden begging for donations when he and all swampers get hundreds of millions from rich people and coronations 😠🤬

James Durham
I think this video misses a key point, that donations to foundations and Donor Advised funds are completely irrecoverable So yes, they can create some delay between the money being marked for charitable purposes and it actually being donated, but any money donated in this will always end up doing good, eventually at least
Comment from : James Durham

Avar Jobs
We'd better have gratitude rather than criticism to the givers because it is not mandatory
Comment from : Avar Jobs

Aktanaly Joodatov
Where is MrBeast
Comment from : Aktanaly Joodatov

Kenneth Brezinski
While the guy did give away 9998 of his fortune, others have taken that amount and investing it further in order to donate a greater sum away That 50+ pledge is over their lifetimes, and I much rather a Warren Buffet does what he does best by donating 10 of his wealth today than giving away 100 of his wealth 3 decades ago That wealth they accumulate is because they are the best at what they do, and if they spend more of their capital making more capital, in the end they will benefit charitable causes more
Comment from : Kenneth Brezinski

Larry Guimond
"A single donation could do big things for a charter school" How could you even say that with a straight face when there's literally a child dying every 10 minutes in Yemen due to starvation
Comment from : Larry Guimond

Zhu Bajie
They should be taxed not donate Like political donations directly correlating to laws passed, the rich make the decisions on how to solve societal issues through donations This should involve the entire population but instead is just another example of the Perverted Golden Rule: "Those who have the gold make the rules"
Comment from : Zhu Bajie

darexinfinity
Tax deductions on charity is absurd No one in this country would donate (maybe excluding to churches) if it they couldn't find some financial benefit on their end
Comment from : darexinfinity

Just the Coolest Dude Yo
It got a brief mention, of donations being spent on private schools, but it should probably be explored in depth the degree to which some of this "charitable" activity is still done to advance a political agenda that ultimately benefits the donor Anecdotally, I remember there being a critique of I believe the Gates Foundation that its biggest anti-poverty work was clustered in countries that provided the raw materials that Microsoft et al use, with the implicit or explicit threat of the charity being revoked if the governments involved didn't offer a good deal
Comment from : Just the Coolest Dude Yo

Sameer Hussain
Charity and generosity are two different things, right?

Comment from : Florida Man Scents

Beyond Plane Sight
There's also another way to look at philanthropic giving Some believe that if they give their wealth to certain institutions it may be mismanaged In this way, there are other individuals that take the wealth they have gained and reinvest it in programs like environmental solutions, education, and renewable energy but are not on this list because they have not given the money away to some other entity to manage The real question here should be WHO should be managing HOW to invest this money
Comment from : Beyond Plane Sight

RepWerks
Just an absolute hit piece on Bezos there in the middle

Telanos
This was something of an odd video for me The "punchline" of the video (around inequality) seems like it should have been the central idea being explored, but this video dances around the idea instead of tackling it directly (until the last few seconds of the video)brbrI also take issue with the notion that the biggest criticism of the role that the Gates Foundation plays, is that it is "undemocratic" This seems to be a particularly egregious example of an absence of critical thinking/analysis of issues, in a video that purports to offer critical analysis and insightbrThe quote by Churchill that democracy is the worst form of Government - except for all the others, is particularly salient Which is to say that as a form of Government, democracy comes with substantial and real trade-offs, but is remains the best choice because other forms of Government offer a worse set of trade-offs The key idea here is that democracy is not some miracle panacea that will magically fix any and all ills if we would just apply itbrbrIn the case of the Gates Foundation, the issue identified around where influence lies in agenda setting for the priorities of organisations (presumably inter-governmental ones like the WHO) being problematic because its 'undemocratic' seems, at best very odd One of the key challenges associated with democratic systems is the tendency for short term, self-interested decisions Which is to say, elected officials are inclined to prioritise actions that favour short term results, targeted at local constituents - and push for allocation of resources consistent with this orientation In public health policy this can lead to issues where it is difficult to push for allocation of resources outside of your local constituency (eg in a neighbouring country) even if that would be a better use of money than if you'd spent it within your own constituency (total elimination of disease is the classic example) brIn the case of the Gates Foundation, an argument could be made that having a countervailing force advocating for allocation of resources toward the broader public interest is particularly valuable This is to say nothing of the fact that as an inter-Governmental organisation, the WHO is influenced by a range of member countries that are themselves undemocratic (and noticeably, it never seems to be raised as an issue that undemocratic countries have a say, even if they are undemocratic)brbrThe other potential issue around the idea the Gates Foundation's influence is undemocratic, is the implicit notion that it is an issue of democracy how private people spend their money That is, the implication that we (the people) should have some say how Gates Foundation operates, simply of the basis that it has achieved a measure of success? That it is a large and visible foundation? That it has lots of money behind it? This is so antithetical to the foundation of how modern "western" society operates that I almost don't know where to begin Perhaps I might highlight the notion that the idea of democracy is that people have a say in Government - or in the modern usage of the term, that people have a say in "public" decision making matters - as opposed to "private" matters (I'm using terms loosely - hopefully the intended gist of meaning is clear) Somewhat ironically, the notion that private decision-making capacity can/should be overriden in the public interest is more typically associated with a form of government that is the opposite of democraticbrbrThere are a slew of different issues that could be explored on this topic (and many of which are highlighted in other comments to this video) Unfortunately, this video doesn't hit the mark

rarewaffles
Imagine the good you could do with the amount of money Bezos hasIt's baffling that he just sits on it Like sure, it's your money so do what you want with it It's just endlessly confusing to me how someone wouldn't WANT to change the world for the better with that much capital available I'd have like 10 different charities doing work around the globe for various causes

Dangerous Kaos
It's wild that we basically don't need congress to fight our battles but billionaires But it's sad that they can dictate what they consider an issue vs us, the people, have a say So when we elect people for congress to do theatre, you got billionaires out here doing the work whether we agree with them or not That's pretty messed up So it's up to the billionaires if I get clean water or resolution for climate change We need to solve the inequality that exists that even give them this type of power to begin with Like make them give it away to only have a "livable" wage like the rest of us, and see how fast things change automatically
Comment from : Dangerous Kaos

Geopolitical Economy Report
This study is fundamentally flawed in that it assumes that all forms of "charity" are inherently good But many "charities" are actually deeply reactionary and are part of the problem When billionaire oligarchs like Bill Gates or Michael Bloomberg donate to "education charities", for example, it is usually part of a neoliberal campaign to privatize public schools and replace them with charter schools brbrAnd in many cases, these billionaire oligarchs also have significant investments in the same industry they are "donating" too (like charter schools or pharmaceuticals); so their "charity" can be seen as more of a tax-deductible investment
Comment from : Geopolitical Economy Report

Rahul Shivaram
Mistaken chart at 4:57, it doesn't account for inflation of dollars In real terms, 200k USD in 1993 is equal to 358k USD in 2023 so you should index the threshold with inflation to allow the bands to be representative

The High Court somewhere asks me $450 as proportional costs again, I have nothing My son has to go to university, I have nothing The old parents ask me for help, I have nothing A small paid Chinese tractor only covered 5 hectares, it has a broken gearbox, I have nothing The work in the fields must continue, I have nothing Nobody in the family has any capacity to help his brother because we have nothing despite our efforts, O fellow human beings, have mercy on us, God, this God will bless you THANKS

O God, your waves have passed over us, one wave calls to another (Psalm 42: ) If You God in Heaven, You don't listen to us, how will man on earth listen to us Our tears are our food every day No one in the family can support another All of our struggles to straighten out turn out to be nil as other problems arise afterwards Endless, if You could lift us up or extinguish us lest we fall into disobedience to You Our Lord In our distress, we invoke you without a return echo We passed the stage of great beggar almost without being heard Who will help us? Please O God, in the Name of Jesus Christ
