I came to comment about the 9 year old boy in Pennsylvania who apparently recently graduated high school from a charter school It really shows that the company’s will milk these kids for money by showing you the good things that may happen but not mention any of the deficits that come with it Comment from : Henry Y |

This type of school model only works on students who already excel at regular school and could excel more when given more freedom The problem is, those are rarely the students who join, because very few parents would pull their kid out if a school where they excel So instead you're left with parents who think online schools are a magic bullet to all the problems their kid/student faces when it actually is more likely to exacerbate most problemsbrbrEven the few problems it "fixes" are a blessing in disguise For example, I was shy and often got bullied, so I would be happily taken the chance to escape to an online school, but that would have only insulated me more and exacerbated the shyness Comment from : didi |

Another problem with these online charter schools it that the schools discourage socialization unless in a club environment, which is something that in my opinion is very important to actually enjoying the class and bettering learning, as if someone were to enjoy being in a classroom because of peers, they would be more likely to learn This is mostly based off of my experiences with online charter schools though so I could be wrong but it's something that heavily depends on where you go Comment from : Teddie |

Online school (ECOT gang wya?) was, for me (I graduated in 2018, online school from 10-12th grade), a safe haven from a school that got worse as the neighborhood got worse, partially because the school began to allow kids from a local neighborhood, known for rampant gang and drug activity, to begin attending It became impossible to focus in class as nearly all of my school teachers would spend a significant fraction of time each period to attempt to keep them calm It was hard to focus in class and out of class because students would fight often and bring weapons to school regularly I'd walked in on drug deals often just trying to use the bathroom, lol Online school was my way out of involvement with gang life, a lot of my friends from public high school ended up in gangs or jailbrbrAt the same time, it was exceedingly easy to get by in online school with even less effort than in-person-school A mix of a lack of socialization, lack of therapy/psychiatric help made my situation worse Over the years I've pulled myself out of a multi-year massive depressive/suicidal stretch I'm still putting the pieces together, but online school was one of the biggest factors in saving me from a life of crime, as young me saw no other way Academically it did me no favors, and that aspect of it was not goodbrbrAll that being said, I feel for yall who have to deal with online school as a result of the pandemic Comment from : J |

i went to indiana virtual school for my senior year in 2018 and there was a scandal involving them enrolling ghost students to profit off funding My experience with them is that they lost one of my test scores right before i was about to graduate and made me drive two hours to retake it kinda makes me wonder if i was the only one they did that to, along with throwing in some extra classes it set me off a year to graduate and they closed right after Comment from : courtneybaby |

honestly in some impoverished towns, charter schools are lifesavers for the troubled kids struggling in a normal school setting At a certain point, we just need that kid to finish school, top of the class or state not being necessary I benefited from finishing thru homeschooling, but I could have just as easily gone to a charter school It was just by chance Also, public schools aren't doing so great either At least in south Texas I can honestly say the same about our local colleges Ppl around here tend to say the curriculum is generally easier as opposed to when one even just goes upstate Comment from : Mackenzie Onyx |

If online charter schools aren't working as effectively as advertised, wouldn't a better plan be to improve them rather than shutting them down? Moreover, none of the problems identified are unique to online charter schools Public schools have them as well Comment from : si91 |

Factually, the conclusion that online charter schools fall behind by “180 days in math” compared to public schools is inaccurate This is because the method of getting to this answer was by comparing test scores of children (as said in the video), which isnt an accurate way Comment from : Daniel Fan |

As someone who did online school for her 7th grade year, I can tell you if you have anxiety or any social disorders, online school makes it worse I was alone almost all day and it made my anxiety and my social skills ten times worse when they were already bad to begin with I was so alone with no friends and no one to talk to you I always had my work done and sometimes finished work at 11:00 AM but I was extremely lonely Comment from : Kelly-Ann Johnson |
I think the studies could have been skewed a little Students who want to be in an online environment, might have anxiety or problems following in a normal school situation, family problems etc etc This means that there could be external factors not due to the online charter school that are causing the children to fall behind That said, I have a real problem with publically traded charter schools getting government funding and lobbying the government Comment from : hep the great |
Online school can be very frustrating I haven't learnt anything there snd I'm constantly procrastinating All i do is get the homework answers from a site and submit Luckily most of the stuff they do there is nothing compared to my old school curriculum Comment from : G E |

the main thing school provides is a chance to socialize and network with other kids in your age group these online schools are setting those kids for future failure Comment from : Galaxy |
The fact that the only data available seems to be standardized test performance doesn't really help drive the point home, for me Public schools have been increasingly forced to "teach to the test" Charter schools generally don't So the real question is, whose students are better prepared for life? Whose students are engaged? Whose students are happier? brbrbrI don't think that these huge e-school corporations are a great thing There shouldn't be a profit motive in education They shouldn't be trying to maximize profit per student, but rather maximize benefit per student However, measuring students only by standardized test scores -- which could be a whole other video in terms of how they are negatively affecting students-- isn't a great way to make that point Comment from : Velo |

The states I’ve lived in NJ & NY don’t have them It would have been perfect for me I’m someone with a disability who needed the flexibility and I was bullied by people in school that made going miserable I’m someone who enjoys learning and does better with independent work Comment from : Lauren M |
Yes, for the majority of kids it doesn't work For me it does I go to Connections Academy With online school, you need to have self-discipline and you need to be motivated For most kids, they honestly don't care about school, think they can not do the work, they aren't motivated, or they don't have enough self-discipline brOnce I switched to online school, my scores on math state tests were in the advanced level, which they have never been in before I made it on the honor roll last year, which I've also never done before I can also work ahead and start the next grade earlybrThere's also the non-academic benefits, like no bullying, I have a flexible schedule, and I can make my own schedule which is preparing me for college where you have to pick your class times Another non-academic benefit is I get sick way less often I switched to online school in late January of 2019, and I haven't been sick since February, and it's currently early September Online school is also much better for my mental healthbrThe classes are also way better than my old school I'm currently in eighth grade, and I can take high school electives I couldn't at my old school, because they were in another building and I didn't have time for it in my schedule This year I'm taking French, which is only offered at the high school, and I'm taking either a coding or psychology class come second semesterbrI think this video is highlighting the majority of students, which is important, but they also lack information on the benefits of online school and the people who succeced with it They just highlight the negatives Comment from : cereal |
Literal chills 😿 I switched to connections academy due to having chronic pain and it literally was the biggest mistake of my life I had terrible teachers and I ended up dropping out of school Comment from : Ben_jamin |
It’s hard to focus when you do school at home It’s too much freedom and are less motivated to do work Comment from : jay s |
I went to an online school (k12) from 3rd grade till graduation highschool Honestly? It was a horrible education for me I met lots of kids whom it worked well for them, but it just didn't work for me From 6th grade on, I never did any classwork I was left to my own devices, and as a child, chose to cheat through lessons with the answer keys my parents had Now in college, I am in remedial classes, and having to relearn everything It was boring, not stimulating, and easy to cheat through Comment from : Harley Quinn |
nh should have been lit up on the map, we have VLACS Comment from : Hey You |
I go to an online charter school and my school day looks nothing like you described in the beginning, I have a full day of full hour long classes, it is almost exactly the same as a brick and mortar school, also many people go to online schools because they simply can't go to a public one for a verity of reasons, also I'm do so much better in my online school than I ever did in my public one, and I am ahead of my local public school in terms of what we learn in class everyday, I'm learning things in my classes that my friends in public school won't get to for another month or 2 and sometimes even till the next school year, honestly is not so much the online charter schools are bad as it is that some of the students that attend are just not cut out for it and would be better of in public, it's not the school's fault or anyone's really, some people do better in online charter schools, others are better in public, and those are just the facts, and yes there are some online schools that are not very good but there are a lot that are Comment from : MoonDreamer |

I’m not entirely sure if this is true or not, cause I’m gonna be attending a charter school that’s mostly online but I go into a class 2 days a week for 6 hours, and me being in public school my entire life up until now freshman year, I’m not sure how it’s gonna turn out now that I’ve seen this video Comment from : Katz |
