Thank you so much for the clear explanations and examples "Show, not tell" ought to make the story more lively brIn a short story, this is relatively easy One can follow the examples you gave But for a long story (a 500-page novel, for instance), "show, not tell" becomes more complicated brSometimes, using short sentences is best It does not mean that those short sentences have to be boring You have to find the balance, and the line is thin brThe problem also exists in dialogues brWhile talking, it is sometimes more natural to "tell, not show"brIt is important to remember this and always try to find a balance "Showing" should not result in overloaded sentences that will cause the reader vertigo brGood writing should not stick to recipes It is more about working every sentence until it fits the story brThank you again for the presentation Comment from : @vassiliki0995 |

It literally clicked while I was watching this video brbrHere's how I understood this brbrWhen you went to a friends house and commented "Your so messy"brbrWhat made you comment on thatbrbrWas it the dirty pizza boxes on the chair, bread crumbs on the seat of the chair or the foul smell of stink from the leftoversbrbrSo what made you comment is what you should write, Be the eyes and ears of the reader Comment from : @Bryantwalter |
Basically: He kicked an old lady and laughed brbrInstead of : bad man does bad stuff because he thinks it’s funny Comment from : @phillipberninger4448 |

My English Teacher used to take tests everyday, about how to write more elegantly and not so pale Our whole class used to struggle He used to say all this and that grammer and so Though, my grammer was good, but the thing he never ever said was "Show, Not Tell" brNow, I'm graduated & interested in screenplay and writing😊 Comment from : @faiz-alam |

Opening line in the first The Witcher book; The town was in flames You really can't win with writing, I honestly believe there is no right or wrong way about it, literature is, literally, completely subjective and hinges on the readers imagination Comment from : @graemewillis410 |

I joined a writing club once I thought it would be good to share my work and read the works of others Since I've lived alone for decades I'm not real used to groups of people but I'm not socially inept either When it came my turn to read a page from my latest project I was immediately confronted with this annoying and very imaginary complaint I was curtly exhorted to "SHOW don't TELL" It took years to develop my current understanding of what that means but even now it is painfully obvious to me that the saying is a purely subjective complaint; one which is too often used by those who simply want to appear more learned in the art of linguistic intercourse than their experience supports I say this because when writing a story we are using the only resources available to us and those tools are WORDS and punctuation Words TELL a story Words can't SHOW a story Pictures SHOW, words TELL The degree of detail used in telling the story, when cleverly used may create a picture in the reader's mind but they are still words and they are still TELLING (some are just more skillfully telling than others) They do not conjure a magical spell to cause pictures to appear on the page They are words and the writer is still TELLING This argument is semantic at best but I thought it needed to be said brbrI said all that to say this Ditch the saying, "Show don't tell" and just say what you mean which is BE MORE DESCRIPITIVE when telling the story Comment from : @webadage |
This also makes for a good English class activity Thank you for the idea! Comment from : @noelleb3643 |

This topic will always be a forever debate among writers I think it should be balanced Sometimes it's better to tell, not show, cos if you're writing a novel and you are writing a long description, the story pace will be slower and boring (IMHO), but of course it's subjective Comment from : @nerdyguy5287 |
Any good book recommendations where the author tells? brI'd really be interested to read such a book Comment from : @asperganoid |
Great advice The concept we received from school is to be to a concise to the point writer in as few words as possible but not an interesting writer So rather than just saying it was "really cold outside" to say "my eyelids were almost frozen shut and my teeth chattered so much my old filling were falling out" Comment from : @davidr4523 |
Step 1 : See the last trilogy of star wars brStep 2 : do the opposite Comment from : @pumpum4058 |

Luckily, when mighty AI gets here and is up and running on all cylinders, us lowly peon humans won't have to bother too much thinking (as we lose ourselves in a giant house of mirrors)😀brMay 24, 2023 Comment from : @michaelmelling9333 |
