My daughter was diagnosed today with dyscalculia I was having a hard time explaining it to my family and how her brain computes numbers Thank you for the simulator! Can't wait to share this with them!

All through school I had problems with math, time management directions, reading maps, my god it goes on and on I'm 56, and still have problems, I just don't know what to do I've always felt stupid, was called stupid because of my math ability Never help in school for math except a small amount of time Teachers are busy, they only have so much time My mom and my grandmother always told me that girls just aren't good at math This made me feel like giving upbrbr Everything that little girl explained on the video is me to this day I literally feel retarded I just graduated 3 years ago, not without failing math classes over and over, and over again I barely passed just by the skin of my teeth What is worse is when your taking a statistics class, you get a graphing calculator and now you have to not only learn the steps to math, and recall them, difficult for me, you have to learn how to use the calculator brbrI was told by the disability services that there is NO HELP for people with Dyscalculia, yet I have been watching several videos that are explaining this learning problem from as far back as 6 years ago What is wrong with California that they are unaware that there is help for this learning disability? They did cut back funding on the regional centers so the only way you can get tested is paying out of pocket for the testing The thing is I had extensive neuropsychological evaluation that took weeks to complete, so my math evaluation is scored on there The problem is that the disability counselors will not accept it because they don't know how to read the results correctlybrbrbrI'm a grandmother and I have at least two grandchildren with the same identical problems I have, one is Autistic, and was tested by 5 Stanford doctors, yet because it was a study, the California school system will not be able to accept it She was tested at the Regional center, given the wrong test, and the lowered the scores for Autism, so she will not be able to receive any services Now California cannot afford to keep the regional services open so there are many children who are slipping through the cracks that will never be able to get the help they desperately need This means no future engineers, doctors, nurses, or any other jobs that require math skills brbrDo you have any idea what it is like to let your dreams slip away because there is no help? I wanted to go into marketing, or become and engineer, but I was told that would never be able to do anything like that by my parents because I just wasn't smart enough Like I said I did graduated, with a 37 GPA Made a 112 A+ in political science, and received an academic award I now hold a AS degree in Graphic Design, which 10 years ago you didn't have to have all the math you must have today, and a certificate in Multimedia Oh Yes, I'm still terrified of math!

I may have this disability and others I am OK with very basic math and that sort of thing but long division or any similarly complex math is one thing I could never do Multiplying large numbers on paper also confuses the heck out of me I am just glad that computers and calculators are common and practically everywhere I also had trouble with book reports and reports on any part of history I also didn't care for art class since I had no sense of creativity to create my own art Homework or any other task would take an abnormally long time I was known to "day dream" a lot or become frustrated easily I am somewhat unpleasant to be around when I am frustrated as you may imagine I am not violent (I was not one of those ones who threw things) but I may have said hurtful things that I would never remember today I don't have a very good long or short term memory Unless I have known someone for a really long time I might not remember them I graduated high school in the mid 90s and I see people I knew but I don't remember many of their names I will just be there thinking I know him from some place Although I am free from school, that doesn't make me feel any less learning disabled I do drive but I don't consider that to be the determining factor of a learning disability The way I see it you can be learning disabled but still collect benefits even if you own a vehicle Not being able to own one would just be part of that horrible prison we call shame It would also be like punishing us just for being alive!! I realize that some people are unable to operate a motor vehicle but being able to should not trigger any blanket assumption that someone is not disabled The way I see it those jerks should try staying at home all the time going bored out of their mind and see how they like it I also say don't judge us so harshly, someone may judge you someday for that!! That someone is someone there is no escape from BTW so watch it you jerks!!

I never knew this was an actual disability I always just thought I was dumb or that I didn’t try hard enough which only made my trouble with math worse

i'm 20 and only recently found out i have dyscalculia still can't tell time on an analog clock and i count everything on my fingers in middle and elementary school i went to a catholic school with no special ed and was sent to the hallway to take tests with a teachers aid who just gave me all the answers instead of actually trying to help me i felt so stupid as a kid because my peers were all miles ahead of me in math i really wish i was diagnosed sooner for the sake of my younger self thank you so much for making these videos

Hello everyone! I was diagnosed with dyscalculia as a child I counted on fingers and percieved numbers in different order A few years later got accepted into STEM middle school with higher math, physics and programming There I wasn't pressured to count and calculate in a certain way as long as my calculations were correct and I could explain the logical chain At some point I could multiply 3 digit numbers in my head to each otherbrIf your child have dyscalculia, they still can learn math even on high levels if they like it as the subject If the teacher makes concepts understandable by providing non numeric analogies, if they show original methods of calculating outside of table ones and make you learn how to think and not what to think, you can understand math and mathematical thinking to the best of your abilities and desirebr I still can't do table division and multiplication, but I converted everything into fractions and triple checked to avoid mixing numbers by writing them bigger on paper Help yourself or your child to understand their weak and strong points and provide them with flexible methods and math can open up to them :)

When I was at school in the sixties it was called being thick stupid lazy not listening immature inconsiderate ! brThe closest the got to it was suffering from number blindness brI could never remember the times tables brWe had arithmetic tests every week on what we had done , I never finished ( there were usually 10 questions ) them and got called names the teachers used to try to humiliate you and encouraged the other kids to laugh at you brWhen iI started secondary school the first lesson was arithmetic the teacher said i do not have any one in this class who doesn't know there times tables ?brSome one said that's you stuffed Duffy ?, So she asked me some , I didn't have a clue what the answer was ?, so I got sent out side in to the hall way , supposedly to learn them brAfter 2 weeks the head master told her I had to be in class brI got sent out for the slightest little thing , ( I actually preferred being out there )brAfter tree months she said you wont pass the half year exam and its your fault ?, I can not spend extra time with you as it wont be fair on the other kids ! brNeedless to say I didn't pass as I could only answer 4 of the questions brI still cant understand to this day why they even had me doing the tests and exams as to me it was a waste of my time and there's brAs they knew I wasn't going to pass them ?brI came to Australia and failed the year 7 end of year exam and had to repeat year 7 again brthat was the last exam I ever did I told them we were moving interstate and left , went back 4 months later to a different school , I only did 8 weeks the half year exam was coming up in a week I told them I wasn't going to do it so I was sent out to do the gardens I did that till I left at 14and 9months

Thank you for the video, I have a really simple case, I think so when I was a little I was very good at math and I was one of the top students on my class and actually I really enjoy doing math, is like a challenge for me but when I got older I started facing issues in writing numbers right so if someone says 56 I will write down 65 and also is my reading I get really confused if I read it right or not I read it wrong most of the time it makes me take a second to think before reading any number, it is so odd that this is happining to me specially that I used to calculate large numbers using my brain only and I still do not face any sort of trouble at doing math and this cases happen with me all the time also I do face issue for example if I took someone's pen I will tell him that " you took my pen" instead of saying " I took your pen" it is super annoying and it's make me look super dumb if anyone know what I am going through, is it Dyscalculia or what exactly ???

wagner77able
I’m 45 and a few years ago I heard of the aforementioned learning disability dyscalculia, which I know I have Math was a real struggle for me throughout my school years In fact, It took longer than average to pass remedial non-credit math in college I wish I had known of this twenty-plus years ago, which possibly would have saved a lot of frustration To me the problem with our education system is that it has been slow as a snail to recognize certain learning disabilities and we make circumstances more difficult than they have to be

If I would have known kids like Alex when I was in 6th grade and the teacher told me other kids struggled like I didgame changer I would have gotten extra help if someone would have tested me, rather than assume I was just choosing not to complete the assignments on time or at all I hope more teachers take note and start helping the next generation with their math skills It's not easy being an adult that gets confused with what is described as "basic" math skills and can't advance further in education or job training #dyscalculiastruggle

I am diagnosed with dyslexia since I was 9 years old I've been struggling with math in schools but I thought it was just a part of my dyslexia Now I'm 26 and I just realised that I also have dyscuclia, but I haven't been diagnosed with that yet The way I realised it is because I started working as a 3D modeller and we need to do basic metrics like units, Cm, m, mm and inches, and it's so struggling for me that I would cry whenever a boss of mine points it out and tell me to buck up, he'll say I need to buck up and speed things up with my tasks at hand Please help I really don't wanna lose my job because of this 😭

I have adhd but I have always struggled with math This example was difficult for me to do in a way I am currently in college as well and I’m still not getting the basic math right How would an adult go to the process of getting diagnosed? Also I love the blocks I might by those for my self:) Thank you for your videos!!

This made me cry, like ugly cry! At 37 I just recently learned that I have this In my quest to learn more about it I found this little video I can't express how much of a relief it is to learn what this is I didn't realize how much trauma this has caused me until I burst into tears watching this That money exercise was so good In highschool I took math in every semester and even sometimes in summer school to try to get a good enough mark to get into the university course I wanted to take I passed grade 12 math with a low 60 something percent I felt so stupid and really I should have been incredibly proud I am proud of myself now! I wish that I knew what dyscalculia was when I was a child It would have changed my life At least I know now

Wow Ever since I found you I have been binging on your videos What a great website I am going to have to share it with my class, since we are learning about Dyscalculia brI am interested in learning how you are able to know determine if a child has a learning disability or a language barrier Completly different than this video, but still haven't found any information on it Thanks!

I don't get why the simulation has the wrong amounts for the coins? If they wanted to change the coin amount, they shouldn't have used actual coins (quarters, pennies, etc) Or, label the real coin value on the coins so that they use (and maybe remember) the correct information

Hi! Thank you for this video I really think I have dyscalculia and want to get diagnosed soon I’m waiting for my mom to graduate before I ask her for therapy though because first of all I’m scared to ask, and second she already has a lot on her plate brI also think I have adhd, I show a lot of symptoms and my mom has it so maybe it’s something I got from herbrbrI want to get diagnosed so I can name it Like you said in another video, for me to say I have something gives me power over it brI have a few questions though!br1) How to I talk about having dyscalculia to a therapist? Do I just say I think I have it? Hint at it? Or what?brbr2) If I get diagnosed how would my therapist help me? I Really really really struggle in math I’m not proud to say it, but the only way I’m able to get through algebra in high school is to cheat My friends will sometimes give me these looks when I can’t comprehend simple problems in my head or have to count with my fingers, so my question is how will going to therapy make it better for me? How will I get through college?brbrThank you so so so much for your incite, knowing there are other people out there with the same struggles as me makes me feel so much better about my situation Thank you

FOR SOME REASON, I HAVE THEE HARDEST TIME, KNOWING MY FREEWAYS UNLESS IM CONSTANTLY GOING ON A SPECIFIC ONE IS WHEN I WILL EVENTUALLY REMEMBER IT, KINDA OF BUT IVE TRIED TO LEARN THEM AND IM CLUELESS LIKE IF SOMEONE TELLS ME TO TAKE THIS TO THATIM LOST LOL IM BETTER WITH KNOWING WHICH FREEWAY IS BY WHICH LANDMARK I KNOW ITS BY IM SURE ITS NOT THE SAME, SND AND IM JUST DUMB LOL BUT THOUGHT I'D ASK ANYWAY

I have two class left before I get my associates They’re both math classes I’m dreading it During high school, I avoided math word problems and was humiliated by my teacher, Mr Bradford, for not understanding fractions He told the student next to me to “deal with me” Had he been an actual instructor, he would have picked up on my responses and maybe looked into it What is going on at institution where instructors graduate from? brI’m going to take an assessment for learning disabilities within the next month Thankfully

I love this! I was wondering what curriculum you like for dyscalculia? We homeschool and I am struggling to find something that my daughter clicks with We add a lot of manipulatives & games to whatever we have tried We have looked into tutors but there are none specializing in this in our area Our local schools are unfortunately not a resource either I keep trying new things (just got a Ronit Bird book yesterday!) but I am curious what resources you like? Thank you!! <3

I’m grown, 30, and you just made me realize why I had such a hard time in school and stayed awake all hours working my butt off on math because I couldn’t finish it, and why I use to have such anxiety going to school to the point where I’d get physically unwell and want to run away, or die, and all that I wish someone would have seen I had an issue I worked so hard raised my hand and begged for help, but still wasn’t fully getting it like I knew I should have What’s worse were the teachers who’d say y’all shouldn’t still be using your fingers, you should have the multiplication chart memorized, if you haven’t got it yet you’ll never get it, and if I see you using fingers you get an F I remember how being timed made it that much worse and if I could here the ticks like in that video I couldn’t even think at all That video made my brain just freeze up I couldn’t count or think because of the timer, but the overall experience with the numbers really is how it feels when I’m trying to quickly count out money for a cashier, I can’t Count it bc I get overwhelmed and panicky, my mind literally goes blank just black emptiness for as long as I’m there staring at my hand full of change it’s horrible I usually just use quarters so I can remember on spot that that’s 25 bam It’s embarrassing, I cried after watching that experience video because it explained it better than I could The lady at the end who said that doing a problem means you have to do the simple ones involved each time too because you can’t remember them is exactly right and it makes it so overwhelming it’s totally true, that’s me,Thank you for making this video
