This is very disingenuous , why not look at overall taxes payed instead of of income Really if I make $10,000 a year and pay $5,000 i pay 50 of my income in taxesbrVsbrIf the rich make $500,000,000 and pay that same $5000 They pay a fraction as far as goes brSo , when you don't show apples to apples you obscure the real fact Comment from : Craig Kessler |
Why look at percentages?! You should be plotting actual dollar amounts Otherwise you have a false start to begin with brbrWhen you buy a pizza to share at a party, you split even ways - you don’t ask them to chip in based on their incomes Comment from : SkyOceanBleu |
Why don’t you add in transfer payments and see what happens Comment from : James Murphy |
Fortunately or unfortunately the government spends $$$ and not So a billionaire paying a smaller percentage still might pay in a day in actual $$ tax more than a poor person can pay in a lifetime Also none of the billionaires use any of the public services that taxes pay for in our society it still seems that you're punished if you're successful Comment from : MalavitaOfBB |
you forgot that generally rich are avoiding income taxes entirely writing it off as a business expenses and other stuff like live trust funds where your dependants inherit stuff tax free etc Comment from : Dust_Gale |
This video was brought to you by someone wealthy Comment from : sid b |

this is totally unfairbrwe in europe have progressive taxation so rich pay more Comment from : Alpenspaß |
Looking at this, the most straightforward way to correct this bracket is to uncap payroll taxes This could allow sales taxes to be reduced as a result of the additional government income Comment from : FlightpathPE |
Honestly anyone making under $50k/year shouldn’t pay tax at all That’s barely enough to get by now Every dollar you make over $1,000,000 should be taxed at 50 Also this doesn’t take into consideration all the tax breaks that only the rich can use Owning “rental” property allows you to get a depreciation tax break and if you own millions of dollars in real estate, you can deduct a good chunk of your property Yet your property doesn’t depreciate, it actually appreciates Comment from : Luis Garcia |
It's working as intended Comment from : Chris |
You conveniently left out the distribution of government transfers and services The bottom 50 in the US actually has an effective negative tax rate if you take this into account in the data I have seen I guess I don’t know what I expected from vox Comment from : Josiah Rule |
People still saying the middle class and the poor are not paying their fair share meanwhile in reality it's the billionaires who aren't paying their fair share brbrAnd I always wonder why greed is the biggest of the seven sins Comment from : Twisted-Eclipse |

Answer: Politicians Comment from : Todd Rovner |
This is such a bad video People at the bottom are paid minimum wage They will be paid minimum wage even if the government removed company's share of payroll taxes Adding that 73 to the employee's tax liability is idiotic This entire video is just class warfare Comment from : Gaurav Bansal |

The problem is your graph is a tax rate not the dollar amount Also how much do poor people get back from the government When this is looked at rich people pay everything while poor people get money Comment from : Drifting |
This video is gold But there is one thing i don't get: While for the rest of the taxes i could find some sort of "logical" explanation, the payroll ones don't add upbrPayroll taxes consist of money for when you get old and money for when you *get sick* Why are people with over $130,000 not paying a fair share?brIf you're earning $162,000 per year, ball/b the $162,000 should go to the payroll tax Why do the $32,000 not get taxated? Comment from : Just Curious |
it's sad Every government wants to make their country attractive to reach people Also governments don't have a goal to make their countries attractive to poor people Specially USA Comment from : Earthman |

taxation is theft no matter on who it is Comment from : Ms Paint |
Why did you show the consumption tax rate being much higher for poor people for tax rates when the other taxes were already normalized for income You can’t add those together like that and makes the entire graph skewed Who checked this before publication?! Comment from : Khrnlls |
With a Federal minimum wage of $725 an hour, you definitely do not want to be the poorest Any tax on them is an insult Comment from : Richard W Crocker |
And Greg Abbot in Texas wants to get rid of the State Property tax, and raise the Sales tax The sales tax would have to be 19 to make up for the loss of income from a zero property tax That would only benefit the rich and hurt the average american! Comment from : Joseph Wade |
The SS and Medicare benefits are capped too, so why should we pay 10x more into something we never get any benefit for? Comment from : Max oobbxxx |
Thank you for this video! Comment from : Hyo Jin Lee |
That's not an accurate depiction of who pays morebecause PEOPLE MAKE LOADS OF MONEY AND DECENT WAGES do not FEEL THE High Cost DAMAGE TAXES DO Think what your income gets you when determining how much you pay Poor pay with their life hanging on and the rich pay from their liberties of forgoing EXTRAS Comment from : Marilyn Clark |
Poor people pay taxes but they make everything back because of government handouts and welfare Comment from : Jr Sun |
if only any of our taxes were actually used in a smart, efficient, with well intent way by our government Comment from : Christian Carpenter |
Presented to further their liberal narrative brI'd like to see a graph of all people by of population including those that don't pay any income taxes with a band of dollar amounts each group pays in taxes It will show that the upper half pay significant multiples of the lower tax payers Also a graph on government subsidies each group is receiving Comment from : Flash |
To include income tax and payroll taxes in the same chart is dishonest and disengenious Comment from : Patrick Pet |
American socialists are truly the dumbest It's a percentage, which means the top 5 pays for pretty much everything Most wealth in the US is NOT inherited; its created by hardworking people over the course of a lifetime Comment from : Lord Hansen |
Well, I think in retrospect tesla hires over 100,000 people and it’s paying half their Social Security and Medicare for those folks as well as any states disability insurance which is an a tax but it’s a lot of extra money that should be also added in corporately speaking Comment from : Christopher Nolen |
Forgot to factor in tax return That same level before the highest gets almost no tax return when everyone below usually gets something Comment from : Athisio 83 |
I'd rather be rich, paying higher tax, than poor, paying lower tax The purpose a tax attorney is to help the rich avoid paying taxes The tax code is written to benefit the rich Comment from : Larry Jackson |
Rich people pay more for their earnings, so progressive taxes are true, but of course the percentage of money paid on other taxes is bigger relative to their salary You can't do anything to correct that, unless you want to make the rich pay more for the same thing, which is ridiculous Comment from : pau duch |
this is much more complicated than what is shown here Comment from : Christian nuñez |
Children pay the least I think Comment from : ChannelName |
Conveniently left out real estate tax, capital gains tax, and much more Also the top 1 percent paid 423 percent of all taxes despite making only 222 percent of the revenue in 2020 Comment from : Varun Vadhera |

Now consider the billionaires that commit tax fraud Comment from : dave_by_day |
Do not fully agree - look at absolute numbers not and you will find out that those top 10 are actually making up like 50 of tax income - You should also add up how much taxes generates those companies that they own Comment from : Plumz videos |
Being on the lower end of the earning class I know that if I changed my name to Jack Rick it wouldn't make me "rich", same goes for Fox News Just because they named themselves 'news' don't make it so A fair share! That's a joke! We should all be "shareholders" in our country Being taxpayers is for the poor who can't buy 'shares' in anything April 15th we should be receiving a shareholders check, not a tax bill We're supposed to be "Capitalist" but haven't figured out how we can make money for "shareholders" despite the fact we build bridges, roads, dams and all sorts of infrastructure, plus we are at the ready to serve our country and pay the ultimate price as shareholders, the rich keep lobbying for the poor to pay more and more Illegal immigrants pay, no overpay all sorts of taxes into non-existant SS accounts and state and local coffers yet never use any services because they are kept in fear of being discovered Yet no one ever accounts for these billions of dollars that are paid into accounts with phony SS#'sThis can be compared to slavery without the room and board Comment from : Ersatz McGuffin |
Why the focus on income taxes, rather than more efficient taxes like land value or wealth taxes? Comment from : Stephen Watson |
This is why social security funds will run out 😂 Comment from : Leo Park |
The billionaire pays less to social security as a percentage of income, but also receives back from social security an even smaller percentage after retirement This same principle applies to other government programs as well They don't receive back as much as a percentage of incomebrbrAlso keep in mind that a billionaires generally aren't consuming billions of dollars worth of stuff Their money is invested in companies that are producing stuffbrbrAlso, remember that the story looks very different when you look at taxes in absolute (rather than percentage) terms According to the tax foundation "the top 1 percent of taxpayers accounted for more income taxes paid than the bottom 90 percent combined" It's something to keep in mind Comment from : Ben Warner |
Not to mention the poorest americans also actually pay more for the same goods as those in higher income brackets due to a multitude of factorsbrLack of reliable TranportationbrLack of SpacebrLack of IncomebrbrThis enviably leads to poorer people more commonly buying basic essentials like toilet paper, laundry soap, cleaner, sometimes even food in cheaper, but HIGHER cost per unit packagingbrEtc I can save a lot of money buying paper towers in bulk at cost co A poorer person will likely need to buy single or double packs of paper towel rolls Couponing is a thing, but they are not like they use to bebrPoorer people are also less likely to have good credit and are less likely to have good credit cards and sometimes will not even have a credit card and will end up losing out on previous credit card points many take for granted to save 3-5 off their bills with more premium cards Comment from : Paul s |
This is a portion of their income though, that doesn't mean that poor people are paying more per person than a millionaire, it just means the ratios aren't the same Comment from : DomesticOnion |
As someone who commits tax evasion, I pay the least taxes (joke) Comment from : Standard Issue |

Tax televangelists Comment from : Jonathan R |
FALSEHOOD: "Economists found that employers get around the payroll tax by paying their employees less" This is a garbage lie, with no factual basis Employers pay whatever they have to, to secure good workers It is the constant government raising of taxes and regulations that cause employers to CHARGE MORE FOR THEIR PRODUCT, which in turn hurts lower-income people Comment from : hanbo |
A bit of a mislabeling - this should be "who pays the lowest tax rate", not who pays the lowest tax This was all along a of their income, not the actual dollar amount of tax paid Comment from : Adrian |
but the rich still pay way more taxes than the poor Comment from : Inq V |
I thought the grubby mind-controlling evangelists paid the least tax or the one percent super rich Aspen crowd Comment from : Kooka Munga |

CAPITALIST PIGS Comment from : Zaeem Ali |
It also doesn't help that businesses charge more to supply poor people with their basic needs as supplying goods in poverty stricken communities is more expensive (higher theft rates, shipping etc) Comment from : Just Blitz |
Don't forget if it wasn't for those rich people those poor people would have less, it's not romantic but without those at the top creating jobs no one would have anything Someone will always be at the top, someone will always be at the bottom Comment from : Tyler Reynolds |
Realy twisting the facts on payroll tax Realisticly you need to take the business side of payroll and add it to the billionare side Comment from : Travis Erickson |

The people with the most lobbying power in DC ? Comment from : Seymour Butts |
Tax the rich and cut the poor a break start a new American system Comment from : Thomas Malthus |
@Vox Really great analysis but still missing an important part of the fuller picture - you should net out the benefit that each gets back from the system from those tax contributions as a proportion of their income (ie schooling / social housing/ health care) I suspect you'll see the greatest burden shift to the lower middle class but hopefully more progressive for those at the very bottom end Comment from : Stephen Whaley |
Couldn’t someone argue that consumption taxes are fixed regardless of the buyers income making them irrelevant? Comment from : Joshua Herrick |
Interesting comparison even if it is functionally wrong to compare tax rates while shifting back and forth between income and wealth as though they are the same Still, this presentation is more accurate than most of the ones I see brbrIt would have been much more complete if the analysis did not stop short and it included the tax credits and other gov't outlays that offset much, most or all of the taxes paid at the low end of the spectrum The US could improve the tax system, but not until the gov't abandons the idea of supporting social objectives through the tax code with credits, offsets, and deductions But that is another topic for another dayand this country is not prepared to have that discussion Comment from : RichD22554 |
Ohh! The poor man is black and rich man is white in animation brJust an American thing Comment from : Subrosa |

Another major issue is companies not paying their taxes appropriately Comment from : FIFA Sims |
The basic flaw in this presentation is that you present proportions of tax as a percentage This is 🐴 💩 The overwhelming majority of tax is paid by the wealthy, no question about it We can not hope to live in a society that promotes penalizing success as it will lead to ruin for all I'm broke and at toward the bottom of earn8ngs but even I can plainly see the foolishness of trying to compare the apples and oranges Comment from : Harold Hausman |
Who's the real winnerthe governmentthey get it all and line their own pockets Comment from : David Gramp |
Circa 2020?!? Comment from : Laurie Galteland |
Stop looking for percentage when we all know that those 400 people pay about 10-30 of all the usa taxes Comment from : Rift Walk |
This is a very unfair video I can see how some people would consider it this way, but in reality, until you put numbers to 's it means nothing This is 2023, I have children in their 30's who have friends in their 30's All of which cry poverty everyday The problem is, they want to work a 40 hour week on a semi skilled job for 35 to 60k a year at best and live like they making 150k per year They complain they can't make ends meet and so hard to stay a float These same folks eat out or delivery twice a week or more, have brand new cars every couple of years, nails done, hair done, iPhones in hand, top of the line clothing and shoes, smart gadgets for everything including turning the lights on and off and 250k houses with 2 to 5 kids Every year at tax time they are all just as happy as happy can be Why? Because they are getting a tax refund between 8 and 10k, after only actually paying in about $1500 in taxes from earnings They take this money and go hog wild with their spending and by May they are right back where they started A smart person would save and distribute this money thru out the year for expenses, but no way This is how most people stay poor and living week to week, they refuse to reserve or save anything America of all classes has a need to wear there money in some form or fashion Take a look at all the retail shops and restaurants if their is any doubt in what I say Comment from : Will Hundley |
