I agree I never exchange money before flying to Italy I try to keep enough euros from each trip so I have enough to get from the airport to Termini and go to the preferred bancomat I have Bank of America and per the bank they have an agreement with BNL Gruppo BNP Paribas so using their bancomats we're not charged a $5 user fee There still is a 3 coversion fee so I tend to take out small to medium amounts when necessary If I have a large note/bill such as a 50€ I'll buy something that costs at least 20€-30€ (usually groceries [canned Rio Mare tuna and packaged coffee make great gifts] or some items from a farmacia) so as to have smaller notes or euro coins Flashback to April 2016 and I had just gotten the train from Lucca to Rome I went to my usual BNL bancomat at the corner of Via Marsala and Via Solferino To be safer, I went into the lobby and used the free standing machine Big mistake The machine ate my debit/bank card I was flipping out No one inside the bank would help me Eventually the machine indicated it was shutdown due to an error Great I had no money for Rome This is where having exchanged money and traveling with cash hidden on my person would have helped I ended up calling Bank of America and it took the entire time walking from Via Marsala to Piazza della Repubblica, down Via Nazionale and onto Via Genova to meet the woman whom I was to pay for the apartment rental Picture me lugging my purse, and roller bag while talking on the cell phone walking through Rome Hilarious Anyway, after another couple of calls to Bank of America, they froze my old card and did a wire transfer of my money to Western Union Thankfully there was a money exchange/ western union lower level at Termini so all was good Moral of the story is to not be afraid to use bank machines on the street Just watch your back at all times This past August I used the same bank with no ramifications I was happy to see that the free standing machine was no longer there and was replaced by two internal machines There is another internal machine with BNL at the branch at Largo Argentina which I used as well I may exchange some money into euros before my next trip like you recommend I've had lots of things go wrong in Italy (passport stolen in Perugia!) but I never let it get me down I'm grateful to be in Italy and I've never known a gelato or glass of vino to not set things right 🤣😉😂€ 🇺🇸✈🇮🇹

This vid is spot on I just got back from Rome, and some Taxis want to be paid in cash, airport to local abnb, usually 28-35 euros Best to have about 200 in Euros, so that you are not just looking around for a good bank atm Some hotels want their cash tax in cash, for all days in advance However, most will take credit card brI got ripped 3 times on the ATM conversion scam I was looking to figure out why in the vid? I dont remember the proceed without conversion But makes sense--the atm did the "work" and cost me $25 However, 3 times I used Debit card--got ripped off 200euro=235usa, 175euro-200usa, about $25 dollars The last time I used my credit card it was about $12 for $90 euro I used the airports on the first 3, while the last one was in town at the time, it was 1:1 dollar to euro so a major scam brbrTriple AAA has good rates But you have to be a member They also do the international driver license for $35 Best rates vary with large banks, you have to check, and takes a few days to get it to you

Hey! How about exchanging at la posta? I’ve read that it could be a good option…

I always have about 500 or 600 euros on me carried over from my last trip, when in Italy I always go to the ATM at the bank, there has been problems getting money but it always seems to work it’s surely not as easy as in the states

You say you just want to hit PROCEED But the choices at the ATM were "continue with NO CONVERSION" or"PROCEED" So which is it? Look at the video at 2:54 on timeline

Excellent information, David! Thank you so much I made notes to refer to for later Our situation is we're moving to Sicily in March Our first priority is getting an automatic transmission car and renting an apartment or villa Then we can open a bank account once we have a local address I checked the AAA links and will have to stop by a local branch to see exchange rate info Not really sure how much cash we should convert from USD to Euro Dollar before we leave It's all a bit overwhelming, but one step at a time Thanks for the info! Ciao

American Trucker Plays
I've never been to Italy but I've always pictured having enough cash on me (safely on me, ofc) to eat or drink or shop at local businesses and use cards to pay at larger institutions that won't suffer much with larger commissionsbrI believe the conversion trick from ATMs is that they make more money out of it than if your Bank is the one that does the math for the conversion at the American/International currency exchange rates

Michael Brancato

Great video! Informative and right to the point We're (hopefully) going this June and are taking a combination of Euros and debit card My only fear comes from the horror stories I've heard that my Visa Debit card from my bank (California) won't work even if I notify my bank I'm researching Travel Money Cards Any suggestions?

Excellent video and great tips! These days you do not need cash brIn Italy you are right to warn that small businesses will complain if you want to pay small amounts (less than 10/20 euros) by card Debit is also preferred by small businesses as they get charged less commissions
