I replace my 758 diesel about every 6-7 years with approximately 400 hours Have 335 hours now Usually some small upgrades and get a new deck with another 4 years warranty I’ve never sold one outright but probably would be better off financially to do so Comment from : Joe Siegert |

Thanks for posting this video, well donebrbrGood point about the enginesbrBriggs and Stratton used to be completely reliable, and long lastingbrI don't know the year but a guy at a farm implement business that also does small engines told me Briggs sent production of small engines to China They started having problems related to using lower grade metal John Deere stopped buying Briggs engines for their mowers and garden tractors, went to KawasakisbrbrI have not heard any complaints on the older Kohler engines I have four that were built in the 1980's and they are dependable even now all these years later They are the 210, 212, and 214 single cylinders They actually have more usable power than newer engines with the same HP ratings of 10, 12, & 14brbrExcellent advice regarding the transaxle and the suspension Mowers like that one are not just ordinary lawn mowers, they are tractors So they also come with a rugged frame to hold everything in place The frame on my 212 is some seriously thick steel They were designed to be able to manage a small farmbrbrWrestle a mower deck like that one you have compared to one from a big box rider and the difference is unbelievable Better not bump a tree with the one from Lowes, etc, you will bend itbrbrWhen I put new bearings in the mower deck of a John Deere Lt166 for a friend I could tell it had some sturdy metal in it Last year for that series was 2001 so it was 20 years old and still was made of good sturdy metal The Briggs engine was labeled as commercial- industrialbrI have no fear of putting money in an older John Deere due to how sturdy they are I have paid up to $700 for a running, complete 200 series tractor in good condition because I know they last I finally found one with a snow blower for only $400 could not believe it Prices for that had been hovering at $700-1000 Comment from : Mike B |
The new X series have kawasaki’s Comment from : d ob |

A well maintained 345 with a fd611v is hard to beat Great residential, or small hobby platform X400s as well Comment from : Chris L |
But I enjoyed your videos and I subscribe I just bought a John Deere 320 I always knew that the old are John Deere's were built far better and your video definitely confirm that! Comment from : Dave Bird |
Not only JD mowers are good to rebuild and keep for other 20 plus years, lots of newer decks can be fitted to fit the older models as well like craftsman, Murray and MTD or YPA mowers Comment from : Phillip Hall |
You are comparing apples to oranges The one you are displaying is an old 300 series You can't purchase a 300 series mower form the "big box stores" Do a comparison with the new 300 series John Deere Comment from : D H |
Suppose they are better quality Point #6 How much life does it have left? Comment from : Gottfried J |
The Briggs Vanguard engines also used in some John Deere garden tractors were every bit as good as Kawasaki These are commercial engines as well and are outstanding workhorses Comment from : jeff perkins |

If a person is just looking for the most reliable, easy to work on john deere model ith 48 inch or larger deck , only for cutting grass { no attachments or other duties} which used older models do you think are best ? Comment from : dave himlin |
I have a 50 year old 214 deere with K kohler engine Also have a 51 year old wheel horse with K Kohler engine Both still look fairly new and run flawlessly Have a 312, John Deerethat I am about to start refurbing Cannot beat these old tractors Have a 1953 Super A with 60 inch woods belly mower Mow 3 acres with these tractors, very low maintenance Comment from : Donnie Dale |
In your opinion, what are a few of the best 48 inch or larger riding mowers/tractors , that are easy to work on { replace belts/ blades ,etc} and last long time ? Comment from : dave himlin |
Older machines were built better with less plastic!!! lol 😂 Comment from : Robert Simon |
I have my grandpa's John Deere 345 It has over 1800 hours on it Still runs and mows fine Starting to use oil and show it's age Just purchased a 425 with under 300 hours on it to replace it Comment from : Mat Sherwood |
Got myself a 355D for this reasonbrEven paid less than what most are asking for a used x165, much less than a x167 Comment from : Der Zieher |

Buying an early 2000 lx277aws with bagger this weekend $1350 One owner, garage kept estiamted 400 hours One guy mowing his small yard Excited to have a real tool instead of the ride on toys they sell at big boxes Comment from : T P |
No more gas for me!! Only electric Comment from : Edward Ranno |
I'll stick to my 316 Nuff said New Deere is garbage 100 Most old American companies are these days It's sad to see the fall of the giants to these no named store brands There's something different about older equipment that makes it last It's called back when they cared what the consumers wanted over saving money brbrGo ahead, compare the plastics used now vs 50s-90s Comment from : Life in Tornado alley |
Took the risk and bought a X350 from AgPro Comment from : Tierhog |
I bought a 2006 X330… Thing is a beast… 2 cylinder Kawasaki 25Hp… everything on the tractor is metal… Comment from : Dr Lecter |

I would match my kohlerr m18 against a Kawasaki anyday Comment from : Alan Armstrong |
started buying "real" deeres a few years ago when they were cheap now have two 180s , two lx176s , an lx188 (water cooled twin) , and a 320 (originally water cooled twin , but swapped in a 17 hp kaw single when the plastic cam gear broke) all kawasaki powered , love them kaws even had a 318 (onan engine) , but sold it the biggest problem i've had with buying old ones like mine , (other than they're a pita to work on) has been rusted decks if a viewer is looking at one , make certain the deck is solid you can buy just the bearings , and rebuild these spindles Comment from : bill smith |
I gotta say that LA-115 195 b&S K-46 trans I bought new in 2008 was the cream of the crop! Easy cheap to fix no bells & whistles like the older post-1988 JD hard & expensive parts to find Comment from : H B |
Maybe the newer X 300 or 400 JD However, the vintage hard-to-find expensive parts The 1988 JD 332 diesel the money pit I got for free cost me $1900 in repairs to bring it back to life However, by the grace of god, it sold for $2500 with everything plow& deck Sometimes if it's a free walk away! Big lesson learned Comment from : H B |
Other engines may have been used in john Deere tractors but nothing beats the Kawasaki for a gas engine period Yanmar is the diesel choice for John Deere They work great but from what I have seen Kubota makes a really good diesel I have the gx 345, 445 and 318 Onan on the 318 is ok but again the Kawasaki and twin touch hydro pedal is better than the 318 but the 318 is a tank Comment from : Bradley Phillips |
Great Video, though i am a cub cadet fan, i respect john deere and all their equipment But i will say, my GT2544 garden tractor weighs 800lbs without any attachments, im really surprised that the 325 isnt over 700 as it is a very stout machine Comment from : Metallica fan 86 |
what is your opinion on the 445 and 455 any good ? Comment from : scoop |
Good stuff, thanks for posting! Been a Deere fan for decades, love their products One issue, though, is certain components that fail and cost a stupid amount of money to replace On my old 155C rider, the fuel tank cracked and leaked No amount of 'fixing' could stop the leak Ended up getting a new tank from Deere $22000 later, leak was stopped But not my disgust with the ridiculous price for the new fuel tanka piece of mass-produced plastic for a 25 gallon fuel tank This issue definitely makes me consider alternatives to Deere for future equipment purchasesalthough they're all probably produced in the same facility with the same materials anyhow Comment from : Santa Clause |
I have that exact tractor 17 hp original 54 inch deck 700 hours mc519 grass catcher 1997 built like a tank they sure don’t build them like that anymore Comment from : sancoffsr |
I found a 345 with 771 hours on it and it looks to be well taken care of, asking 2000$$ for it, what do you think?? and what’s most important to checkout first? Thanks 😊 Comment from : Gabe |
There is simply no comparison to these old tractors I know my la150 is a consumer mower the Briggs engine still runs all I did to the engine was have the carb replaced valves adjusted and replace stator as far as the tractor goes the deck had to be rebuilt a few times but I put a Spicer 6 speed on it even though there is nothing wrong with the K46 I just wanted more power Comment from : Willie McCollum700 McCollum Small Engines |
Great shape for a 1997! Thanks for the info Comment from : Gabe |

I have a 345 I purchased new twenty-five years ago This has the Kawasaki 18 hp twin, liquid cooled enginebrI have done the plastic tooth cam gear replacement, and replaced the complete hood assembly as it became brittle over agebrIt would shatter if anything hit itbrI used factory new mechanical and body parts from John Deerebrthe tractor looks new again, even down to the factory hood decals, even though it has 700 hours on itbrIt runs perfectly, just like the day it was delivered new from the JD dealer in Fenton MobrParts and labor I have invested 3 thousand in restorationbrMy neighbors said , "why didnt you go to the box store and buy a new one"brI told them, the quality is not the samethis tractor was 7500 new! Comment from : Mike Byerly |

My lt166 still runs well Comment from : Zombie Slayer8999 |

Hey, thanks for this, I'm on my second GT275, love it, definitely a workhorse and I cut about 4 1/2 acres and it does a great job I'm getting ready to change the trans oil and I've also just ordered a filter, the long cylindrical one, is that the only filter I need? Thanks for this video and you're spot on about these older rigs, they're the best Comment from : Massachusetts Restoration Team |
Sorry FD but Case Ingersol rules the yard/ drive etc no comparison Comment from : Medley Deluxe |
Honestly people here in the StLouis metro area, in my opinion they don’t seem to give a rat’s ass about John Deere lawnmowers You can buy relatively nice JD riding mower for like $100 bucks to $250 , do a little fixing up on it and have a pretty nice mower But we are truly living in a throw away society People buy them, run the crap out of them and throw them away Comment from : Matthew Huling |
2019 bought a 1988 John Deere 322 with 500hrs, plus 4 way hydraulic 54" plow for $2500 Only used for plowing Ohio winters Looked maybe 2 years old Best money I've spent on a machine Comment from : Counterbalancelife |
Great video! I’ve been trying to convince people of this for many years There truly is no comparison 🦅🇺🇸 Comment from : Baldeagle242 |
These are not the good tractors 425,445 are the ones you want Comment from : Tom Rugger |
You are so correct; I don't think you can even buy a heavy-duty unit like these anymore at any price They just don't build them this way anymore, I have a 425 Deere that is like new and wouldn't sell or trade it for anything Great video!! Comment from : MIKE JURECKA |
Deere and other companies were compelled to produce big box store products to hit certain price points Such units are lawn tractors made to mow grass, pull a cart etc What you are showing and Deere still produces in current models is a lawn and garden tractor Made to mow and handle ground engaging implements Deere also has the best parts system in OPE industry, particularly for older models Great video full of good information Comment from : Gary Busby |
now the bad, cheaply made plastic hoods, poorly made seats and a lot of models like the 345 has a lot of electronics that go bad, parts for kawasaki engines are high dollar Comment from : George Strickland |
I have a 40 year old John deer 214 , still a great machine , unlike the chinese motor ,plastic junk John deer produces now Comment from : Chuck Stewart |
I love my 76' John Deere 400 Comment from : shanes maine shop |

I have a gt235 with a Briggs 18 hp It needs a new engine Is it easier to stick w a new Briggs or would a kawasaki repower be more difficult? Comment from : Tom Dutcher |

Great video I agree with getting a used quality tractor over a new much less capable machine I've owned 3 LX series Deeres; an LX172, and 2 LX176's Still have an LX176 and I use my tractors year-round I recently bit off the big one and purchased a 2012 X728 Ultimate Got this Deere with only 450 hours on it Yeah, for what I paid for it, I could have bought 2 of the box store John Deeres, but having 4 wheel drive, a 27 horsepower v-twin, liquid cooled, fuel-injected Kawasaki, hydraulic deck lift, and plow angle, were all major pluses for me Admittedly, it's somewhat overkill for most of my needs, but so far, plowing snow, mowing, and just routine yard work has been made so much easier with this beast To replace it with a brand-new X738 with a 54" plow and a 54" mowing deck, would cost about $16,000 For about 1/2 the price of new, I've got a tractor that will last me the rest of my life Comment from : Rodney Fritzinger |
Great info for everyone looking at older used models online! You pointed out pretty much everything buyers need to know Keep it up Comment from : Workshop Rebuild |
Good video as usual If you have time to reply , just wondering if you have plans for another video with your 1023? That’s what I have and they are interesting to me because I don’t have a lot of implements so I’m always looking to see what things I should spend money on that I would use a lot Thanks Comment from : Chris J |
Enjoyed the video, packed with details, nice job You bring up a lot of great points Comment from : Building a Legacy |
I have a 1999 Briggs powered GT235 The hydrostat is getting tired but it runs like a top and mows lawn like golf course quality, very informative video, thanks for posting! Comment from : Mark & Ilene |
Good video But you didn't go back far enough The 325 is still a good quality machine but it surely doesn't measure up to the earlier JD's like the 317s, 318s, and 400 series I think way too much emphasis is put on engines They will all last if taken good care of But anytime I see a verticle shaft engine in a so-called "tractor", with all those belts and pulleys, I look at it as a lawnmower Good for cutting grass or toting a small trailer and that's it But, the theme of your video makes a good point, unfortunately, most buyers could care less We live in a throwaway society and lawnmowers are no exception Comment from : Joe |
All really good points I have a 345 I'm currently doing a little upkeep to to, getting ready to resell, and I'd rather have this machine over any of the new X300 machines available Machines like these were built to last, and it shows They were also built to be serviced, and that's a major reason why they can last so long My old 330 is indestructible!brbrGreat video! Comment from : Lukes John Deere Garage |
Great overview of tractors that were built for long-term use Comment from : Purple Collar Life |
I have a 1987 165 John Deere with a yellow 38 inch mower deck that was manufactured at the John Deere plant in Horicon, WI brThis tractor never fails to start no matter how hot or cold it is outside brNo, This tractor doesn’t have all of the bells and whistles that a lot of the newer tractors have - But it really gets the job done brThe mower deck makes for an excellent cut quality no matter which mower blades that I have on the mower deck and I have only replaced the primary mower deck drive belt maybe twice since I have been using it for mowing brEven more, I really like the easy availability of parts for anything John Deere within this area of Central KY which I can’t say about some of the other competing brandsbrAnd Yes, I have spent some money on my John Deere tractors, But it was money wisely spent brThat is my take regarding my experience with my older John Deere’s Comment from : IronDuke502 |
I have a 02 GT245 Awesome machine!brFirst brand new Joh Deere I ever bought worth every penny! Comment from : Jimmy Budweiser |
I like the old johnnys only as far back as the Kawasakis started I can do without the onans and kohlers Still good but the Kawasaki are smooth can be liquid cooled and frame and general ergonomics are better Few months ago I rebuilt a efi 445 engine We’re all 445 efi from the beginning? Comment from : Garny |
I bought an '04 GX255 with 400 hours on it for $2,500 I bought it because my dad has a GT245 he bought new with 1,700 hours on it and we've worked that thing way harder than we ever should have! Comment from : MaxDiff328 |
Told my son we buy a John deere or get a goatwife said NO GOAT!!! Comment from : mr NASCAR |
I have a 325 with 2600 hours on it It is bullet proof I put $670 Into it which included rebuilding the carburetor still runs perfect Comment from : Ryan Howell |
Nice video I’d add the decks are designed to be removed and attached without tools or cotter pins brDon’t forget they use a car battery Also, I had a 325 with a FC540V with 2200 hours when I bought it Nothing like working on quality Comment from : Small Engine Guy |
