Hi from England! Lentils are a great way as an alternative to meat in Shepard's pie, chickpeas etc, I'm trying to be meat free 4 days of the week, if you're lucky over here Lidl do a veg box for 1pound 50, I've never thought to check the reciept after walking away from the cashier, I try to roast any veg that are ready to go off to freeze and later use with a Quiche or omlette x Comment from : leese of life |

Scanning thru I’m not seeing it, but buying pre-shredded or sliced cheese is like the veggies A lot more expensive, plus it’s treated to prevent clumping and to last longer so changes the taste and prevents it from melting properly Comment from : Jeremy Helquist |

My frugal hacks: (1) make a list incorporating ingredients for a couple of meals (2) use non-dairy milk like almond or oat milk, it lasts longer than regular milk (3) freeze or make a smoothie to use up spinach that's on it's way out (4) cut down on meat If I want meat, I get frozen shrimp (tail/legs still on are freshest and cheapest) defrost a few and add into a quick stir fry or whatever (5) slice/chop your own veggies like onions and celery and put them in large freezer bags It's just fresher and lasts longer Comment from : Brooklyn Redbird |
The old hack of not grocery shopping while hungry really does help You have less temptation for impulse buys I also find if I plan out recipes based on items that are on sale I can save more I peruse my store’s circular and try to plan meals/snacks based on ingredients on sale Comment from : Gretchen Bostrom |
All of your points are good but especially the one about only shopping when it's absolutely necessary because inevitably I'll see things that aren't on the list and they're so tempting That's my biggest way of veering off budget Comment from : Barbara Fowler |

Here’s a tip if it’s just two of you that you’re cooking for double the recipe or make it for four people freeze the other half for a meal later that week or the following week but don’t let Your frozen meals sit in the freezer for a month or so it loses its flavor And appeal brbrAnother tip is to cut up all your veggies and some fruits if you can and have them prepped before you use them it cuts down I’m running to fast food during the week when you’re tired n don’t wanna cook everything‘s already prepared for you you just throw it in a pot Comment from : Cathy Gray |

I freeze bananas that are getting to that “too ripe” stage and use them for smoothies and banana bread BIG thing I did was take actual inventory of my freezer and pantry It’s AMAZING what one has and doesn’t know/remember it Helps with shopping too and restocking Bought a small handheld sealer on Amazon and I am thrilled how easy it is to work at keeping my food fresh I also divide up large items into meal portions, chicken breasts, tortillas, pork chops, etc that come in a large package Thank you to all that gave me new ideas 😊 Comment from : Janie Estrada-Martinez |
2 tips that really worked for me: 1 Take a specific amount of cash and buy only for that amount, you'll be amazed at how much you of the things you need you end up with & 2 Only buy things like detergent once they've completely run out as what's left in the bottle lasts much longer than you think it will Comment from : Demetra Panagou |
Your wonderful! Very specific helpful tips, much appreciated Comment from : Patricia Mirwaldt |
Love the way you talk Great tips too! I recently started to write down groceries and items in fridge/freezer and pantry, and start to plan dishes I could make from there It’s amazing how many dishes I could make without shopping, and how little my groceries went bad I don’t use the app because I have a diverse background of different cuisines (Chinese, Cantonese, Thai, American, French, Italian, Mexican, not expert of each but you know, not too shabby either, 😛) Thanks! Comment from : Liyas Sustainable Living |

I do home canning and have for 50 years Hams went on sale for 89 cents a pound for the holidays, I bought 4 Three hams I cut up and wrapped individual servings and put in my chest freezer for sandwiches for the rest of the year I simmered all 4 ham bones, prepped 6 pounds of Navy Beans and canned 58 pint jars of soup beans and ham using the ham bone stock and ham pieces from the bones and the forth ham Now I have shelf stable ham and beans that will keep for years without refrigeration My calculation was each pint serving will be about 50 cents each Homemade good and I know the ingredients in every jar! I reuse the canning jars and only have to buy a new lid each time I can I bought Loads of lids on sale 2 years ago brbrAfter last St Patrick's day I got 20 Corned Beef flats for $199 a pound I ended up with nearly 100 pounds of corned beef for $200 I spent the day canning in pint jars Shelf stable for years Now when I want my favorite dish, Corned Beef and Cabbage I open a jar and pour out the liquid in a pan to cook the cabbage, in about 7 minuets I add the corned beef to warm up and have a delicious homemade meal that costs about $2 a pint jar Comment from : eckankar |

I do the round up to every item I put in my cart So far I've only gone over budget by maybe $5 and that's because I forgot about an itembrbrTo add to the conversation as well, I shop the discount store near my house, it happens to be right across from a Kroger, for the majority of my meats I'll prep large roasts, break down family packs of chops and beef, cut leg quarters A lot of the price in other stores is having cutting done for you Learn to handle a knife! It can save $$$ Comment from : Rose Bunny |

Before shopping, make a list of what you already have so you don't buy what you don't need Make sure you don't shop hungry, you'll end up buying more Check out the ads before you shop and come up with meal plans based on what is on sale and work out meal plans for a week or two Fresh fruits and vegetables can be hard to use up unless you have plans to use them in multiple meals or can freeze them for later Make sure you have enough space in the freezer for what you are buying Purchase chuck roasts and pork butts instead of loins, and special cuts If you cut up the larger pieces of meat yourself, you can get more meals cheaper, especially if the meat is on sale 5 lbs of frozen chicken thighs are cheaper than a 3 lb whole chicken If I am going to roast a chicken I'll get it cheaper buying the Costco $499 roast chicken than buying a raw one If I want a salad and a salad mix will spoil before I can finish it, I also get the Costco food court chicken caesar salad It is actually big enough for a side dish for 2-3 meals I also stock up on Costco's $150 hotdogs and buy two or three for easy workday lunches Not healthy, but really filling Do stock up on bulk items you do use a lot when they are on sale I try to keep one extra back up item for frequently used things like mayonaise, rice, and flour when it is on sale You just have to remember to only stock up on things you can use within 6 months, not 6 years Great tip about going down aisles where you don't need anything, even with a list it is hard to pass up some items I remember to shop the top and bottom shelves The store brands are usually cheaper and some are just as good as the premium brands Sometimes when I pick up something in the store, I have to ask myself do I really need it or do I need it now before I put it in my cart It also helps to keep your calculator handy and keep a running total of what you already have in your cart If there is something that you can make using pantry staples, why buy for convenience like pie crusts, pancake mix, cake mix, or tortillas Comment from : imafan26 |
