What should be addressed are issues such as humidity, temperature, moldy environments, proximity to coastal (salty air) regions, inside gun safes where solvent-soaked guns are kept and the like This is largely a security/safety/catastrophe focused video rather than a preservation, appearance, value retention and surface stability one PSall coin flips are not created equal And albums have more minuses than plusses, in my view Comment from : C R |
|

Just remember, safety deposit boxes aren't insured by the FDIC If you want insurance you must purchase it yourself Also, who is to say the bank in hard times won't take your money and the contents of your box? It has happened in history people Banks and/or the government will take your stuff in certain instances, simple as that Comment from : David Denson |

This video and another video about coin storage were "recommended" to me by youtube today and BOTH videos either neglected or refused to mention the individual "air tight" capsulesbr Please explain why these convenient and durable coin protection devices are frowned upon by the "professional coin experts" Comment from : earthling john |

A good and cheap way to store valuable is in a box of Tampax in the guest bedroom I've also heard of a bullion seller that sprat painted a comex bar and used it as a door stop Plain site can be good - anything but that sock drawer Comment from : Ready-Adhesiveness40 |

A few points:brbr1 Don't the carboard Whitman carboard books and also the ones in which the coins can be seen from both sides contain carbon and can tone your coins and may be unsafe for your coins? I am aware that there are also books for storing coins that allow you to view the coins from both sides that don't contain carbonbrbr2 The individual cardboard holders can contain little bits of cardboard that may adhere to your coins and scratch-up the coin so this may not be the best option for a high-grade expensive coinbrbr3 Sending in the coin to a company that grades coins may protect the coin but the grading companies may be inconsistent in how they grade coins You may not agree with the grade of the coin that comes back I have had problems with even PCGS and NGC which are supposed to be the two better grading companiesbrbr4 There are boxes for storing certified coins that also help prevent toxic chemicals from reaching the coin in the air There is a company called Intercept that makes boxes that are lined with copper to protect the coins from impurities in the air The only draw-back is not all certified coins will fit in the slots in the box The holders for coins certified by NGC are too wide so they have to go in the box at an angle and will take up more roombrbr5 Don't the fire-proof safes retain humidity inside them? People on Cointalk on the internet suggest putting something inside a fire-proof safe to take out humidity from the air inside the safe if rare coins are stored inside them I would think that after a while if nothing is put inside the safe to take out humidity the coins inside will start to corrode Comment from : Chris D |
