Steve, have you tried The RL Seal's 12 46ABV ? For some or other reason this one is hard to find anywhere and I just can't understand why Maybe down to some limited release? My top so far is RL Seal's 10 yo and i recon the 12yo version might be a bit too interesting Comment from : Ник Волк |

I have a bottle of Flor De Cana 12 from a few years ago that was maybe half full I decided I need to get back to using it, so I tried sipping it first but wasn't really on board Felt very muted compared to other rums, and I was getting a chocolately note I decided to use it as a mixer now and have been enjoying it both in rum and cokes as well as rum and pineapple For the price, I'm probably going to stick with Flor De Cana 7 The rest of these (at least the ones I can get here in the US) are all excellent sippers! Thanks a lot Steve, for your educational and cognitive reviews) I'm a newbie to rum but having been a deep rooted whisky drinker for years (I'm 62), seem to be aquiring the real taste for decent sipping rums But my pallate is rather on the drier side than on the sickly sweet side I can't say i've tried loads of rum but i've already started collecing that "stuff" in my " wheel house")))By now i've already got 5 various rums-Plantation X0 (even on the drier side , i liked it a lot), Matusalem 23, 15, Viejo de Caldas 15, Havana Club Seleccion de Maesro Barrel Proof (45ABV), and my latest aсquisition was Dillon XO (9yo) agricole from Martinique The only rum i've disliked in my "rum journey" was "Diplomatico Reserva Exclusiva'(turned out way way too sweet for me) Prices in Moscow(Russia) are quite resonable for some (40 dollars on sale for Plantation X0 and 55 for Matusalem 23 in one of a liquor store) and unreasonable for others (Doorly's 12 at 70 bucks,)but yet others disappeared at all (such as Appleton Estate 12) as to Dillon XO agricole- around 40 bucks Thanks again for your "sweetshop labour" If you've tried any of the listed above, i wonder what you"ve liked except for "Plantation" XO Cheers! Im a whisky drinker looking for some starter sipping Rums Sounds like the Flor de Caña 12 is a good all rounder for the pricebrWhere would go start with for a reasonably priced cask strength rum? Comment from : Neil Anderson |

I'm still new at all of this I really like Doorly's 12 but now I want to try the Appleton 12 and Flor De Cana 12 to compare Both of those are easily available in Denver Comment from : Kyle Norman |

Hello Steve I have been watching this channel with increasing interest As a Whiskey / Bourbon drinker, I have a growing interest in Rum as a diversified path toward wider taste notes other than caramel and vanilla I have tried Diplomatico, Smith & Cross and a few others and found them all too sweet Can you recommend three brands in the £40 to £60 range, that can be found readily available (Whiskey Exchange, Master of Malt etc), that you would rank as THE LEAST SWEET I would appreciate your input here Steve Comment from : BourgeoisCapitalist |
I would like to have seen these ranked as an old fashioned Comment from : Kevin Tracz |

Appleton 12 YO – smells exactly like the Dunder in the Distillery in Jamaica, therefore reminds me to a nice visit at Appleton Estate Comment from : Lutz Lungershausen |
I haven't tried Cubay orDoorly's, so ED12 is definitely my favorite and I'm not a whiskey lover/drinker, but I do love the woody notes, either neat or with coke, that's my 100 go to Rum Comment from : Corvarc |
Nice to see some more affordable sipping rums get their due Comment from : stockicide |
Interesting video I am a sipping rum man rather than cocktail of these Flur De Canna and Cobay would be my stand out picks El Darado 15 is much better than the 12 I really don't enjoy Plantation, and not a massive fan of Appelton But it's all a matter of mood and palatebrThink you should have included an aged acricole Comment from : Geraint Lewis |
Hey steve,do u know DON PAPA RUM?i love it,regards, Comment from : 〰️🔘〰️Doctor Tremulants Laboratory〰️🔘〰️ |
The timing on this video was perfect! Considering a few bottles in the $50 range to get myself for my birthday and I kept coming back to the plantation XO Thank you for making this even easier for me! Comment from : KevGotti |
Another awesome video Steve I like the way you organized the rum in this one Sweet to woody What's good in a daq What's good in a Rum and Coke Might have to check out the Flor De Cana You didn't put it in the "woody" end of the spectrum brbrI'll have to try Plantation XO in a daq Didn't think to try that I have tried Appleton 12 in a daq Couldn't make it work for some reason Comment from : Damien Hull |
First time viewer, don’t comment much but had to!! Excellent video and explanation of flavors etc Comment from : Blue Tiger Sport Fishing |
No Cuban? Comment from : Wajih Taiara |
I can't decide the palate changes depending of daily circumstances as well as the mood you are in Generally speaking I would choose Doorly's 12 since my bottle is long gone but honestly I also have El Dorado 12, Appleton State 12, Plantation XO on my shelf, and I am really glad I do I have tried Flor de Cana 12 before but I still need to buy me a bottle of it Just as Doorly's and Real McCoy, Foursquare also produces a bottle call "RL Seale's 12 Year Old Barbados Rum" Comment from : Bender |
I love the plantation XO But out of the line up, it’s the only one I’ve had Hopefully I’ll get the chance to try some of the others Comment from : Graham Shellswell |
I don’t like Rums from Guyana and haven’t had the Cubay But the rest are all great! But I tend to like the higher abv stuff as I progress on my rum journey, just so much more flavor! When you are lucky some Plantation SC releases are under 50€/£ and at about 50, a bit younger but also great and cheap is the CDI Jamaica Navy Strength, more expensive but also absolutely lovely is the Hampden Overproof etc etc Comment from : Henry L |
Of these, Plantation is my favorite But Im a high proof whiskey drinker, so when you move above the $50 price tag, I move more to the blended Rums produced by Foursquare more often than not 2008,Redoubtable & Indelible all on my bar shelf right now Comment from : Thomas Gort |
You need to grab a Dos Maderas 5+5 You will be shocked $4600 US Comment from : Greenpea |
Great Video Your review on Doorly's caught my interest since it's my latest go to after many years loving Flor de Cana 12 year Thanks! Comment from : Rum & Cigar Night |

Plantation XO my favourite so far on the journey 🤙 Comment from : Jeff McJeff |

Plantation XO 20 year old Barbados anniversary rum @ 40 proof Is the best bottle of rum I've ever tasted Nice legs and a lovely flavour coming through with banana, chocolate and mango being the ones that my palette picked up A rum for special occasions me thinksbrbrDictador 12 yr @ 40 proof A lovely rum Good legs Quite expensive and special treat quality Comment from : Paul Wood |
Unbelievably, the Ron Cubay 10Y special reserve is around £28 in my neck of the woods so it's a no brainer really! In it goes in my shopping cart 👍 Comment from : Al Ho |
Doorlys 12 is my choice I can get it for $2699 everyday and sometimes under $20 with sales and coupons at total wine It’s a steal Comment from : Jarrett Tinnell |

Hi Steve, always cautious about rum since my age 17 debacle 50 years ago, it has only been with cocktail making I have bought different styles I was given the rum tasting pack of 5 nips by the Master of Malt, as a retirement gift! They were my only sippers with their tasting notesbrI actually prefer single malt whisky as sippers in the winter late evening with shortbread by the firebrBut rums are a rock in my cocktail bottlestock Kraken as specified for A Right Hand Twist, Havanah 3yo as a workhorse, Appleton 8yo for Jamaican, Wray & Nephew for OP Used up my Woods in making Allspice dram and most of remaining Pineapple Grenade, rest went in my chocolate orange bottle My Havanah Spiced is still almost full, so little used and I will replace my Goslings for Dark & Stormiest Nick from York Comment from : Nick Bradley |
nice video im enjoying the flor de cana 12 drop of water and let it sit for a bit and its a lovely change from whiskey being a whisky man and just getting into rums im not sure about all the sugar some companys add especially as the flor de cana 12 and doorlys xo are so nice without the addition of sugar, it just seems to me that if the spirit is well made it shouldnt need added sugar am i wrong in this and would i be missing out on some seriously good rums if i only bought rums without sugar i realize its not whisky and just wonered how common adding sugar is bought a bottle of mount gay eclipse for a rum and coke i think it has sugar but its for coke not to bad would white rum be betfer? thanks for the video Comment from : m shaves |

Hello Steve A rum that I really like for 50 pounds sterling is the Saint James 12 years old It has an exceptional flavor and it is much better than many more expensive rums I really like molasses rums but and agricultural is top 👍 Comment from : phil gringo |
Haven’t had the Cubay, but my faves are pretty much in order starting with Doorly’s and moving towards the XObrI like the “whiskey” vibe in my sippersbrAnother banging videobrCheers, StevobrbrAdded: i do not like rum & coke nor rum & ginger, i prefer a white rum daiquiri but absolutely love moody daiquiri’s, basically depends on my mood, haha! Comment from : ken wood |
I would put in dos maderas 5+5 if your gonna put in Ron cubay Comment from : Windy Bum |
Plantation XO all day long would Don Papa 10yr old still be classed as spiced rum ? Comment from : Ian Naylor |
The older Zaya 12 was one of my absolute favorites over the years! The 16 year Zaya is as close as I can find to the old 12 brbr But currently Appleton is where i am at! Comment from : IronHead |
