Sorry, maybe my math is wrong but you said that you needed to keep 30 of the calves to replenish the older herd and of the 200 calves that were available for sale, you said that the remaining amount for sale was 170 calves 30 of 200 is 60, leaving only 140 calves for sale instead of the 170 that you mentioned, which changes the profit margin that you were giving an example of What am I missing?

It is really hard, and I think that 4000-acre land can make millions of dollars if you grow wheat or rice on it!! In Pakistan, people grow 17 acres rice and make 8000 dollars in 6 months I think these ranches are failing because they don't grow or can't grow wheat or rice on their land, maybe due to weather or other conditions That also shows how all the world is shifted to wheat and rice because it gives more revenue than cattle! Here in Pakistan, people who have 20 acre land can keep up to 40 or 50 cattle easily, and they do use land for agriculture purposes also!!

Fun fact: in 2023 Minnesota had more cattle than Montana I grew up in West Central Minnesota on a farm with dairy cattle, steers, goats, and horses We had about 100 head of cattle on over 100 acres of rotational grazing land and had a couple of hundred additional acres for silage, hay, and cash crops With our irrigation system our stocking rate was about two acres/cow brbrI’d love to get back into cattle but I’m fresh out of undergrad (in part time grad school) and buying a good chunk of land in North Dakota is tough to find for under half a million dollars My current job grosses 70k, but still makes it hard to save any serious cash (as in over $100,000 for a down payment) I could buy some cheap, semi-forested land in Central Minnesota for quite cheap but I’ve come to enjoy the open air of the Great Plains It’s tough to get into ranching without saving cash for 10-20 yearsbrbrPs, have you ever read “Cattle Raising on the Plains of North America”? It’s a great read I found it interesting how most of the cattle in the Dakotas and Montana were brought in from Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Iowa, while places like Colorado and Wyoming got their cattle from Texas

Seeing these numbers is a huge help I’ve been wanting to start a horse “ranch” (breeding, training, and selling) as a side business (so that I dont rely on horse sales as my main income) here in Alabama and while things are definitely cheaper here, its still not ideal with all the expenses there are Thanks for breaking things out so I can better plan for my own ranch!

He forgot to mention how much time he spends to earn that measly $42k per year, because ranching is a whole lot more than a full time job 🤠brbrI'm a Software Engineer, but I desperately want to save up for a nice chunk of land for homesteading for that self sustainability he mentioned I intend to engineer my own power plant, gray water systems, geothermal heating, greenhouses for some tropical fruit, etc Ultimately, I'd like to package that idea up in a way to make it accessible for others to pursue
